ee THE EVENING STAR. —— GRIERSON’S EXPEDITION. } The Great Cavalry Uperations in the | South west. } On the morning of April t7th, Col. Grierson, | commanding the First Brigade of Cavalry, | ander Gen. Grant, which was rendezvoused at | Lagrange, Tenn., received orders to move into i Mistissippi. On the 1&th, the line of march | waa taken southward. A force of rebels wae met the same von at Pontotoc, Miss., and their entire camp equipage was captured, also tour hundred bushels of salt, all of which was de- etroyed. Col. Grierson continued his march wntil about eight o’clock, when he encamped six miles south of Pontotoc, on the road lead- ing to Houston. A large rebel mail was cap- tured, and a number of guerillas killed at | Pontotoc. ! On the 2iet, Col. Hatch, acting under Grier- | son’s orders, destroyed Spee of the Mobile | and Ohio Railroad, and n. Grierson having | thus accomplished his present purpose, viz: deceived the rebel Gen. Chalmers, he turned northward, leaving a portion ef his torce to continue on to Starkville, where another mail | was captured and other damage done. Four | miles from Starkville, at Dismal Swamp, a | Balt wae ordered and half of the command lett. The rest continued on southward for about five miles, and, after swimming bsyous, and wading through almost impassable swamps, veached one of the princips! tanneries in the country, which was fired and completely de- stroyed. ‘Aller the uniting of the command on the 22d a further march was had to within one mile of Louisville, Miss.,—a distance of sevanihy- coven miles—and thence proceeded to Philadelphia, Miss.,andthence to Decatur and Newton, where mails were captured and railroads destroyed. Gniereon then continued on in acouth south west direction, and at Gallatin captured a Parrott gun intended fer Port Gibson. From Gallatin a detachment was ordered east, and destroyed the N: w Orleans and Jackson railroad. A feint having been made toward Port Gib- son, with a view to deceive the enemy, anda similnr movement made in the direction of Natchez, to menace that place, the main body marched on te Brookhaven, already occupied by our advance, and where was captured a large number of mushets, tents, &c. At Was- #ita Grierson had a skirmish with rebel cavalry, and defeated them, killing and capturing a number; and thence our forces proceeded tothe Tickfaw river, and changed their course to one directiy south. At Oseykaa plan was laid to capture our forces, and 2 rebel cavalry regi- Ment was posted to flank him; but having whipped them in several successive skirmishes he murched on, and on the seventeenth day from the time of starting the inhabitants of Ba- ton Rouge were startled by the arrival of a courier, who announced that a brigade of cay- alry from Gen. Grant’s army had cut their way through the heart of the rebel country, and were then only five miles outside of the city. Fight hundred miles traveled in sixteen days eom prehends Grierson’s eventful journey from wpper Mississippi into Louisiana. He cut his Way ‘hrough the enemy’s country with two regiments of cavalry, destroying on his route four millions of rebel property, capturing over a thousand men and twelve hundred horses, demolishing a camp cf instruction with all its equipments, cutting the communication on the Great Northern and New Orleans and Jack- | son reilroads, and destroying @ large number of car-, telegraph wire, water tanks, and army stores. The expedition left its mark on every railroad in Mississippi. Passing through 2 Bost of dangers, and working great injury to the enemy, Col. Grierson halted on the let of May st Raton Ronge, and thence pushed on to | New Orleane, where he was received with en- | thusiesm. } Sxarep pr j Mayor s Uffice until MONDAY. the 2pti atis{ o'clock & , for Grading and Graveling Uwenti-th | “from B to L street north.
