The rebel papers inform us that heavy rei , fercemenits have arrived near Jackson, Misis- | sippi, from Charleston and trom Georg! | cc-operatuion with ihe rebel force at Viel sksburg will render the cestrnetion of Grant’s army But with Jackson in our pozsession, 1 reinforcements to reach vi ksburg, and with their railroad communi- ‘ation south and west cut off, it is quite as difi- cult for troops to reach ksON, or, indeed, to comeé within thirty miles of it, at least for some weeks to come. On the northeast Grierson has destroyed the Mobile and Ohio railroad at Okoloua; on the | cust he cut the came read at Enterprise, as well #s the Southern Mississippi at Chunkeyvyille, yenty-eight miles trom jackson; onthe south cestroyed the bridges, tracks, &c., of the ippi Central Hiazlehurst, Bahala, Biookbaven ard “ummit, burning, also. along the entire line, for a distance of over forty miles, ali the curs, engines and other rolling steck, witho read, even it repaired, would be nseless, and whiea the rebels cannot replace. Thus reintorcements, (reach Vicks- must march long distances through a ry which hus beeu swept clean of sup- gud must, moreover, fight and de tin the cpen tield before it would be pos- sible toi yanction with Pemberton ai the ieitl stenghold. The serious injuri as inflicted by Grie: tatement, are yet more consider the grea m ol Mississippi, as a practically destroyed. In of railroads, valued | nese the Grand Gulf and Port Gibeon 3 Dud, winich cost $120,000, and is in Jength, is now wholly in our The Mise Central, 157 miles costing $4, entirely useless ud must remain so, from sheer | wentof ircnand other material necessary to is aoe an aS thus inflicting a vast cienly exhibited if w © he rea from Memphis to Grenada, ninety-nine miles, and costing $1,149,319, is also useless to the enemy, its northern section being under our control. The Mobileand Ohio road, which has a length in Mississippi of 283 yniles, 2nd cost in alf $8,174,000 cannot be used vontinuensly, and is of no value, so far as concerns the transportation of troops or sup- plies to Northern Mississippi or Tennessee. So the Memphis and Charlesten road, running through the northeastern part of Mississippi, bow in our possession almost to the line, is cf no use to the rebels, our occupancy of the road cutting off theirarmy in Tennessee by that ronte irom all: communication with their inland reserves. ‘Thee facts show us clearly the immense ad- vantages which the forays into the heart of the rebellious States have given us in our western operations; and if now onr eastern comman- ders would but possess themselves of the moun- tain ranges running trom Penngylvania to Georgia, thus isolating and cleaving in twain the Confederacy, it would in six months inevi- tably fall to pieces were not another blow to be struck.—V. ¥. Posi. A Hew Stony.—The following story is told by w paper in Stockton, California: he of opr prominent republican citizens is now engaged ina singular controversy with one of his colored ‘brethren.’ The dark-haired ‘brother,’ it appears, owned a hen, this hen visited the prernines of her master’s white ‘brother,’ and thereby hangs a tale, The said negro’s hen then laid a nest full of eggs upon ihe republican’s lot, and commenced setting. The said Republican, having some chcice Spanish hen’s eggs, took advantage of the hen’s situation, and removes her own laid eggs and in their stead placed the Spanish hen’s eggs. In due course of time tht eggs were hatched. But now comes the irrepressible nigger, and eemands both hen and chickens, claiming that the former is the mother of the latter. The re- publican demurs to this, and puts in a plea that the real mother is the hen that laid the eggs. The nigger ‘don’t see it,’ and points toa Piece: dent where his old master, Judge McGee, ‘when a womsn sued iora ‘divorce, gin the children to the woman, ‘cause she brooded ‘em.’ The real question between the ‘brethren’ is, which hen is the mother of the chickens? The negro threatens to sue, either for the chickens or for damages from use of hishen. Whether this question will be carried tothe Supreme Court remains to be seen. w@-Two_ small boys, named Francis Lary and John Devine, aged respectivel: nine years, have been nahiyceo in cn & charge of shooting and killing a named John Mooney, four years of age. held the pistol and Devine pulled the trigger © wav The rebel Pemberton is in bad oder fa Vi of
