[ASSOOLATED PRESS DISPATOHES.) THE WAR IN TENNESSEE. From Murireexbero MURFREESBORO, May 16.—The situation here is unchanged. The extension ofthe rebel left to Williamsport has not weakened the heavy infantry force in our immediate front. The three corps of Generals Polk, Hardee and Breckinridge; are at Guy’s Gap, Waterace and Hoover's Gap, respectively. General Polk’s corps consists of Wither’s and Cheatham’s divisions; General Hardee's of Claibourn and McCowan’s, and General Breckinridge’s corps ot his own old division, under Hardee and Helms, and reinforcements lately received, forming another division, it is said undercom- mana of J. P. Anderson. Itis also said that Bragg has received rein- forcements from other one of three brigades, but it is alse ssserted that the same troops had gone to the aid of Vicksburg. The forces al- Inded to are Gen. Churchiill’s, just exchanged, Gen. Gist’s, from Charleston, and Gen. Walker's, from Sayannah. Certain it is that il their troeps passed west on or about May i2th. General Wheeler's rebel cevalry was at MeMirnville on the 13th, Col. Winder's scouts captured eight of his body guard yesterday, ond found documents on them showing that Wheeler’s force was at McMinnville. Gen. Morgan has had a quarrel with Gen. Their efforts should and must be thwarted. If necessary, one hundred thousand men to beat them back. Such a force would be required only for about the space ot two months, after which time the heats of summer and low water will do our lighting for us. Gur hold upon the Mississippi once wrested from us, itis gone forever, or xt least so long as the war shall coutinue, which would isolate the Government from the West, cut oil all inter- course, and place us at disadvantage whea we shall enter upon the adjustment of terms of peace. A great deal has been said ubout guar- anteeing the tree navigation of the river to the Northwest, but with what plausibility could our Government come forward with sucha proposition when the entire river, with allits fortifications, erected by the Confederacy, is already in their possession! Of course they would laugh at such a proposition coming from us under such circumstanses, and hence it of the first importance that our present po- sitions on the river be permanently held. Bet- ter far would it be to sacrifice Richnond, Charles ton, Savannah or Mobile than to yield the river, by which the Confederacy will be rentin twain, the West hopelessly cut off from the East, and a yast section of the best producing portion of the country subject to the depredations and epoliations of the enemy. The very thought THY LATEST FROM MISSISSIPPI. A correspondent of the Mobile Register, | We regret our report canno‘, in trnih, t | remain | tal arrang: writing from Jackson, May 3,says:—Thestate. ment of a naval officer in Vincinnati, mentioned by the Appeal, is doubtlest correct, that Vieks- burg will not be attackedinfromt Having the moutb of Red river im their oceupation, and a jormidable ileet scouring the Mississippi from Vicksburg to Port Hudson, it is their aim to land a powertul army on this bank of the river between the two strongholds, penetrate leisnre- neo the interior ef this State, and wait for the expected reinforcements from @orinth. They would thus both occupy the courtry’and completely Jsolate Vicksburg from sapplies or subsistence, leaving it only to time for the gar- rison tostarve and to capitulate. The forces to counteract such designs are inadequate in point of numbers, but we have Generals pos- wae some portion of Lee’s eagacity and THE WEEKLY STAR. But in Missiseippi Grant is in motion with a heavy column, and pee mace advances which necessitates a speedy le. Until lately the Yankee infantry on the Lower Mississippi have never ventured out of shelter of their gunboats, but Grant, since the capture of Grand Gulf, is showing himself more ven- turesome. Some days agohe sent a column trward from G: Gulf to Rocky Spring, @ out twenty miles east of the Mississppi, where he fortified, and yesterday the telegraph injormed us that a force of 10,000 had penetra. td twenty-three miles further, to Raymond, a town of about 500 inhabitants, only fourteen miles southwest of Jackson, the capital of the State. Our own forces have retreated through Raymond four miles to Mississippi Springs, a yoint ten miles ffem Jackeon. The first desire of the enemy will be to cut . which leads frem Jackson to. the rail Vicksburg, and over which the forces at Vicks burg ebtain their supplies. At Raymond they are only five miles trom this road; and the pas- sage of the Big Black is over long apvroaches of eats work, rendering ita very vulnerable point. It seems evident, therefore, that a conflict with the enemy cannot long be delayed in that quarter. We have too much at hazard toallow delay. Wedonot know what our force is as compared to that of the enemy. But it will not do to stop to count. We must fight, whatever the odds; and we cannot afford to be besten un- derthe circumstances we have named. We are happy to learn that General Jos. E. John- ston is in immediate command of our troops. His presence will inspire our men with cour- age. His name will be a tower of strength. We are listening, any day, and almost any hour, for the telegraph to announce a battle; and we await the result with faith and hope, that the forests of the Mississippi, and the shores of the Black, will echo the notes of yi:- tory which haye goné out to them from tho Rappahannock. he progress of the enemy, thus far, in this Attempt to gain the rear of Vicksburg and take Jacksen, has not been without opposition. There was a heavy fight near Grand Quif and Port Gibson, in which Gen. Bowen, with 5,01) men, held and sewerely punished a greatly outnumbering force of the enemy, but was ultimately outflanked and forced to fall back, with the loss of a Lowisiana regiment taken prisoners, besides a heayy list of killed and wounded. NSnbsequently the enemy were re- | pulsed at Hankinson's Ferry, near the month of the Big Black. But their superior torce has enabled them to prosecute their march. as we have stated, along the hizhway between and peranel to the Bayou Pierre on the south, and ig Black on the nerth. This leads them to- wards Jackson, and brings them near to the bridge by which the railroad from Vicksburg to Jackson crosses from the north to the sonth side of the Black. Here the two armies wil! probably join battle, and may God prosper our / cause and give us the victory. THE BATTLE OF BAYOU PIERRE [From the Jackson ( Miss.) Appeal, May 3.) We have made every effort to obtain some intelligence of the loss on both sides, but haye been unable to do so. Yesterday moraine nothing more was known at Vicksburg than here. Both armies suffered severely. The zene- ral estimates of the army on Sunday noon were that our loss was one thousand killed, wonn- ded and prisoners; that ofthe enemy about four thousand. Our killed and severely wounded were left upon the fleld. On Satar- day the enemy refused to allow a party sent out under a fiag oftruce to bury the dead io cross their lines for the purpose, saying that their own details were attending to that duty, and that the wounded were cared for. They secured some hundreds of prisoners, most of whom were sick or disabled. The engagement was a long and bloody one, and gallantly did our boys, for hours, repel hordes concentrated against them. Whatever of advantage the enemy gained was dearly tought. It was enly when onrlittle band was worn ont by fatigue and their ammunition ex- bausted that they fell back, which was done in comparatively good order, and thearmy saved to win honors elsewhere, which they are now prepared todo whenever the enemy see fit vo advance toward the stronghold at Vicksburg. On Sunday morning, a bridge having been thrown across Bayou Pierre, a Federal caval- ry force crossed and gave some little annoy- ince to the rear of our colugn moving along the Big Black. Nothing serious, however, oc- curred, asthe enemy generally kept at a re- specttul distance. As we look upon it the position at Grand Galf was only of strategic importance so long asthe Big Black wasnavigable. The defenses. suéh as they were, were euly constructed after the enemy had succeeded in getting some of his crait between Port Hudson and Vicksburg, when it was Suprenendent they might possibly get transports through the canal. Atthittime the Black was navigable as hich up as the raii- road bridge, and to obstruct the pussage of a forér to the rear of Vicksburg by thst route, the place was occupied The river has now fallen, and a division of our forces for holding Grand Gull is no longer necessary.
