The Intelligencer thinks loyalty as under- stood by radical politicians to be a very cheap form cf patriotism—consis ing chiefly inspeak- ing evil of dignitaries, € vecially the Presi- dent. The Chronicle regards t @-Intelligencer’s ex- hertation to the Adminis ration “to support itself" as insolent as itis elfish, and thinks it springs from a quarter n¢tentitled te utter it. —_——_+ ee... —___ OUR MILITARY BUDGEF See gerne ANOTHER UNION VICTORY! A reliable dispatch from Fortress Monroe teacbed bere this forenoon, announcing the capture, last night, of a rebel battery of six guns upon the Nansemond river, by our forces operating in the vicinity of Suffolk. No par- ticulars of the affair had been received up to the hour of noon to-day. HOOK ER—GORDONSVILLE—KELLY'S NEWSPAPER STRATEGY, &0. ‘The newspapers are again carving out plans of the campaign for the Army of the Potomac; & bootless task, indeed, as the public’s expe- rience with the result of their- previous ex- ploits in the way of mancuvering that huge army demonsirates, The New York Evening Post of Saturday, among others, dilates upon the fancied taking of Gordonsville, and lays down for General Hooker fae plan by which he cannot (in that journal's estimation) fail to take Richmond and end the war in (the inevitable) ninety days! Now, we have to say that no more absurd rumor ever crept into the columns of the press than this same story of the taking of Gordcas- | ville, cre the roads leading there had dried. Nature has Sccorded it an impenetrable de- fence up to this time, if not fora week or two longer. This Gordonsville story was followed last week by another whispered around (first among the secesh here) that Stoneman had been disas- trously defeated at Kelly's Ford, &c., &c., in which there is no truth whatever. He moved up the Rappahannock on Monday last, and ! threw a email portion of his cavalry across ‘ the river there for a reconnoissance, designing to cross more over. But a sudden rise of the water warned him that to do so just then would be impossible. So after an inconsider- able skirmish with the rebel videttes and other troeps there, he withdrew all that had pre- viously got over. The losses on both sides Were about even—neither losing anything to speak of. The latest Richmond papers of | course magnify tie rebels’ share in the affair, | ag their allies in this quarter have done. { In view of the serious injury time and again . inflicted on the good cause by such newspaper | disquisitions as those of the Post referred to above, we respectfully submit that it will be | best for the press to abstain altogether in future | from indulging in its propensity to chalk out i Union campaigns, in doing which inklings of ! FORD— movements may be given out, resulting in in- ' calculable mischief. It is enough to know that | the Army of the Potomac never was in as excellent and reliable condition as at this mo- j ment, and is ready to move at the word of com- mand when and whither its commander or- ; ders. The country may safely rest assured } that he is not the man to hesitate to more it | when he can do so with advantage. { NEGRO ON THE BRAIN. H Our venerable cotemporary, the National In- i ! i telligencer, is becoming sorely inflicted with «negro on the brain,” we fear, as it appears to ' have at length evidently come to see nothing | but “the negro” in the Goverament’s war poi- ' icy. Itis hard to tell which is just now most | *? devoted to the interminable theme—the Tribune or that journal. Ouridea of the duty of aloyal newspaper &t this time differs widely from that of our cotemporary, if we may be permitted to draw conclusions from the apparent devotion of its columns to the dissemination of articles calculated to disincline the public to giving the Government's war measures the hearty sup- | port they must have to insure the suppression | of the rebellion. There can be but two sides from which to | choose just Row—thuat of the rebels or that of the Union; as he is net reliably loyal who hes- itates to support the Union cause with might | and main because, forsooth, his own ideas of | how it should be managed are not made the | basis of the Government’s war policy. He who ; expected that the institution of slavery ceuld | go through a long civil war withont being ut- j terly shorn of its political strength, is short ' sighted. Nor is one a true friend to the cause , 4 | of the Union unless willing to aid the Govern- i ment in depriving the rebellion ef the great strength it derives from the employment of the millions of slaves directly and indirectly in Aiding its military operations. We have never | believed it possible so to deprive it without in- | directly laying the founéation for the entire ' abolishment of slavery in the border States, to | the temporary pecuniary injury of the small class of Ioyal men in them who owned such | property; and we have cheertully accepted our | individual share of that injury, as we value | the cause of the Union far above any property ; interests. In this connection we may call public atten- tion to the important fact that the policy of making soldiers of the negroes has certainly : been asuccess. They have answered as well | in Louisianaas in South Carolina and Florida, and the fact that they do answer well, has al- ready obliterated the original repugnance of the army where they serve, to their employ- ment with arms in their hands. That, in turn, imclines them much more heartily to the ser- vice, and they sre therefore enlisting far more readily than before. If the war is to be pro- tracted we may not very long hence haye a bundred thousand of them in the field, to the great advantage of the cause. A DANGEROUS ASSOCIATION. In a recent examination of parties arrested for disloyalty, whose names we do not know, @t Weewnineter, Carroll county, Md., before Judge Nelson, it came out in the evidence that there exists in that region an association or club of traitors bound together by secret oaths to aid and abet the cause of the public enemy | by all means in their power, including a project i to invite an invasion of Maryland anda promise | oa their part to murder their Union neighbors, &c. We learn that the testimony is of such a character as to leave no doubt that the atrocious | ecoundrels have actually so pledged themselves toeach other. The authorities in that quarter | are after the prime movers, and will doubtless | hot only secure them, but will so dispose of | them in quick time as will serve for a warning | to the thousands of rebel sympathizers in Mary- {and that the public patience is at length clearly | exaAausted by their persistent treachery, GENBRAL FOSTER. ‘The papers of this morning air General Foster has arrived at Ne’ jaformation reached here at an early hour on ; ment in the city to-night, } and Pa. | NOON, the 224 inst. at + Captain Ogden, from | floor Saturday, and was known to us at noon of that day. We refrained trom alluding to it, as being news snch as should be kept from the knowl- edge of the rebels as long as possible. As it has thus been made public, we may add that his visit to Newbern was evidently o:casioned by his wish himself to direct the movements of the reinforcements endeavoring to relieve Washington, (N.C.) We augur, from his suc- cess in getting down to Newbern soeasily, that his presence with the relieving troops will greatly aid their future operations. Se eee Tne OrEraA—Don Juan.—Another brilliant audience on Saturday night, the performance being Don Giovanni, which, considering the smatiness of the stage and paucity of adequate scenery, was given in creditable style. The orchestra and chorus was excellent. Lorini as Donna Anna, was unusually good. Her aria and duet with the tenor were magnificent. Morensi's qualities ot voice did not show to advantage as Donna Elvira, a part te which it is not well adapted, but she was enabled occa- sionally to give atouch of her quality. Cor- Gier’s Zerlina was very gocd, and though not in her line, she sung the simple part with fine effect. Amodio's Pen Juan was fair but not striking. Susini, 2lways good, made much of the part cf Leporelio, though his rendition varies from the famous personation of the part by Carl Formes, and probably those who saw Formes first in it would not be satisfied with Susini. Silver- tongued Brignoli madea great hit as Don Gtta- rie, i To-night Verdi's renowed last work, Un Ballo in Maschera (The Masked Ball), is to be brought ont with astrong cast. The scene is laid in Boston, but the piece has so many ano- malies for « Bosting town” and characters, that it is presumed the author had another locality in hie mind’s cye, our American city being subitituted for political reasons. Seats and authorized editions of the Libretto can be procured at Metzerott's. TRE Wisconsin ELEcTION.—The morning papers seem to be still in doubt as to the result of the late election for supreme judge in Wis- consin. There can be no question as to the election of Judge Dixon, (republican and Union,) as Goy. Salomon (now here) received a letter from his private secretary on Saturday ng that the soldicr’s yote of itself gave Dix- ona clean majority of five thousand, while the vote of the State alone elects him. ————_+ eee > LATE TELEGRAPHIC NEWS. Yhe Petersburg the operations in the direction of Suffolk: “All thatis positively known, and all that can be stated as reliable, is that heavy flring on the other side of the Blackwater commenced at early dawn yesterday, and was centinued with but little intermission upto a late hour last evening. Musketry firing was heard by many persons in Southampton, and cannon firing by undreds residing in half a dozen different counties. Thata battle of considerable mag- nitude was iought there can be no doubt, but as to results, they are still ina state of sus- pense.” A despatch to the Raleigh Progress says: “ GOLDSBORO’, April 11.—General Hill has Washington surrounded, and can take it by fighting; and I learn that he expects to take it without firing’ gun by starving the Yankees into a surrender. They haye been in the habit of getting their supplies once a week from New- bern, but the communication has been cut off. The Yankees had three gunboats in the river beiow Washington. Twoof these have been captured or destroyed by Gen. Hill’s forces, and I understand the others cannot escape. Washington muy be now in our possession, and I think it more than probable that it is; but if not now, it is only a question of time.” The Mobile Advertiser of the Lith inst. claims that the rebels repulsed 400 negro troops at Pascagoula on the previous Thursday witha loss of fifteen killed. It says the rebel loss in the affair was Lieut. Hill and one rebel private wounded. LOSS OF A TRANSPORT. Information was received to-day atthe Navy Department et the loss of the U. C., and on her way sprung aleak. After it was found necessary to abandon the vessel, she was fired in order to prevent her falling into the hands of the enemy.
