LATE FROM THE SOUTH, Reports from Suffolk and the Peninsula— Fight on the Rappahannock—Gen. Lee Issues an Order Indicating Offensive Op- erations on the part of the Rebel Army— Confed Opinion that Hooker Does not Mean te Fight. We have received the Richmond Dispatch of Friday last. The Dispatch publishes a report that General Longstreet has surrounded our forces at Suffolk, cutting off their communica- tion with Norfolk. The Dispatch, however, discredits the story and also a rumor that the whole of our forces had been captured. From the Peninsula the Dispateh reports that Gen. Wise has captured Fort Magruder with 1,000 prisoners. The Dispatch credits this, but we know itto be untrue. The following has al- most as little foundation, as we explain else- where: THE FIGHT AT KELLEY’S FORD. As aresult of the fight at Kelley’s Ford on Tuesday last twenty Yankee prisoners were brought to this city by the Central train yester- day evening, and lodged in the Libby prison, it seems thatthe enemy were repulsed five sue- cessive times in their efforts to cross the river, and finally gave up the undertaking. Their loss is estimated from twenty-five to thirty in killed and wounded, besides those captured and brought down last night. Our loss was one horse killed, and onesoldiersligtly wound- ed. Everything was quiet at the Ford yester- aay morning. THE REBEL “SITUATION” TO THE 15TH INST. {From the Richmond Sentinel, April 15.) The telegraph brings us news of Wheeler’s op- erations in Tenneseee, in his character of Gen- eral Superintendent of the railroads in that State and Kentucky, and Master of Trans: porta- tion for Rosecrans. He has been altering the schedule, &c., on two roads in Rosey’s rear, ite doubt to his greut disgust. We have reports also that Van Dorn has had: a fight at Franklin, which seemed to have been marked by fluctuating and not very pros- perous fortunes. We do-not ima that the affair was a very important one nklin is nineteen miles south of Nashville. From Suffolk we learn, by way of Peters- berg, that Longstreet's men were known to be within two.miles of Suifolk yesterday morn- ing, and that citizens who left the. vicinity re- port that firing commenced at half-past five, and was still progressing at nine o’clock, when the inf passed ont of hearing. The forces yf the enemy are variously estimated, It is. probable that Longstreet, who is known to have been advancing on them, attacked them yesterday morning. “Bight report says thatthe Federals haye | nday Heraid | cemi-ofticial. y announcing | present, RELEL REPORTR FROM FREDERICKSAURG. April I am happy to state t the heslth of the army is improving rapidty. There is not more sickness here how than usu- ally exists in an army of this size. The roads are becoming good. On the 3istof March Richmond, the capitol of Madison pxrish, situated on the junction and on the other sides of Roundaway and Walnut bayous, was captured by the Unioa troops. The little, ri.er formed by these two bayous is aiout two hundred feet wite and very deep. A large steamboat came up to Richmond in 141 after colton, and I have no doubt, if & few trees were removed b-how there, that it would be navigable now for Smull steamers, The enemy tried to resist our crossing, but Gen. On the 3d day of March, at 3 o'clock p. m., alter amarch of twenty miles, we arrived at Smith’s piantation, two miles fron Cartuage, with our cavalry and four mountain howitvers. 4 skiff was soon procured, and Gens. McUier- nand and Osterhaus witha few members of their staff, ten men of the 7th Indiana Infantry and your correspondent, started on a recounois- sance to New Oarthag>. New Carthage is situated on the Missis-ippi Tiverubout twenty-five miles below Vicksburg. Itis fianked on the left by Bayou Videil; on the right bank of this bayon is a levee rnaning trom Roundaway bayou to the Mississippi river, but this levee has three large ere yasses : we walked on the levee and would use our skift to cross to the other side; when we came to the jast crevasse and while waiting for the skiff to to take us across, We were saluted by a voiley of musketry from the Carthageniahs, which haa the effect to arouse our ire, for one of the balls came very close to our Generals. We yeturned the fire, for each of us had & musket, and hz@ quite a fittle fight. As the night had begun to draw her sable curtain around oa, we raised the siege and fell back to Smith’splanta~ tion. x Next day General Osterhaus, with two com- panies of infantry And one morntain howitzer, embarked on fiat-boats and skiff, moved upon Carthage. When at the proper distance he opened fire with his howitzeron the town, After shriling it thirty minutes, he debarked his in- fantry and took the place at the point of the bayonet, killing one man and ranning the rest away.
