Hal- leck's recent letter to the loyal leagues of New York would have been more effective had its malignity been better concealed, and advises military men to say nothing against sneaking traitors or copperhead politicians if they wish to escape the venom of acer ain class of jour- nals, q The Intelligencer argues that if there be any wisdom in the military direction which pre- sides over the war, the Union arms will soon achieve decisive victories, and exhorts the Ad- ministration by wisdom in devising its military plans and selecting its agents to produce such Tesults as shall remove occasion for humilia- | ting harangues to the people to support it. ————++2-_. OUR MILITARY BUDGEF ares FURTHER OF THE AFFAIR ON THE N MOND. i The steamer Baltimore arrived at the Navy Yard this morning from Fortress Monroe, bringing some further particulars of the affair on the Nansemond. The Mcunt Washington was towed to New- port News on Wednesday, where she will be repaired. She received two shots in her boil- er, and several struck her engines, damaging them considerably. Her wood work is pierced through and through. One of the Minnesota’s seamen, temporarily on the Mt. Washington, | was killed, but none of the men belonging to her were injured eo as to keep them from duty, although many were struck by flying splinters and slightly hurt. i The pilot of the Stepping Stones lost one ot | his legs. We understand that the gunboats on the Nansemond haye received a reinforcement of | the following gunboats from the Potomac tlo- tilla:—Yankee, Capt. Ives, Coeur de Lion and Primrose, Capt. Street; and the flotilla there, | With these auxiliaries, will undoubtedly be able to keep the Nansemond clear of rebel bat- teries. ANSE- THE DUTA The examination ot Captain Emile Hollnide ¥ COURT-MARTIAL, was finished yeSterday. Lieut. John Dessaner was next sworn. He ‘WAS at One time adjutant of Col. D’U.’s regi- ment, and he swore that a number of second lieutenants were placed en muster-rolis as first lieutenants by Col. D'Utassy, anterior to their promotion, and 4s such drew pay. This wit- ness also testified that Col. D’U. had advised and persuaded soldiers to desert; also that he | (witness) was instructed to write ont the pro- ceedings of a court-martial and fill up the | ‘blanks with the name of Lieut. Rafelli Frictioni, | after the original proceedings had been lost; and he testified also to the fact that Col. D’'Utassy received commissions for the surgeon and Ascistant surgeon and never delivered them. He also corroborated the testimony of other | witnesses, to the effect that members of the bana bau teem placed ON Ue pay-rollo and Teceived pay as private soldiers, and that Col- D'Utassy saw them paid off. WESTERN OPERATIONS, The second and third divisions of the Army of the Frontier are now encamped within fifteen miles of Rolla, Mo., and are under command of Major General Herron. They are in splen- did condition. They will probably remain | there till about the first of May, until the grass has grown sufficiently to afford food for the an- | imals used in the service of thearmy. We may then look for active operations in Southwestern | Missouri and Arkansas, and sharp encounters | if Gen. Price succeeds in organizing any con- | siderable army at Little Rock. CAPTURE OF A REBEL GENERAL’S CHIEF OF STAFF, Official information has been received of the <apture, on the 17th instant, of the rebel Gen. French's chief of staff. The capture was made on the Nansemond river by Lieut. Cushing | of the Commodore Barney. | ———————— NEW COLLECTION DISTRICT. The President has established a new assess- ment district composed of the following coun- ties :—Berkley, Frederick, Shenandoah, Jeffer- | son, Clark, Warren, Loudon, Fauqueir, Fair- fax, Prince William, and Alexandria. ee CAPTURED. Arthur C. Kell, orderly sergeant of the Old Dominion Rifles, of Alexandria, a Confederate soldier, was recently captured near Aquia Creek, and on Thursday was brought to Wash- ington. ——__+<+e + ___ Tux Orxena.—The Washington Theater last night preseated a brilliant spectacle, being thronged in every part by a fashionable audi- ence. it Trovatore, an opera familiar to Washington audiences, was the piece presented. < Lorini as Leonore was very fine, although her corpulence is much against her. Her rendition of the aria Tacea la Notte was equal to the best we have ever heard. Morensi (contralto) as Arucena, however, carried off the honors of the evening, and her performance of that arduous part was effective indeed. Maccaferi is but a passable Manrico, though a much better actor than the average of tenors. Amodio as the Count di Luna is correct and acceptable, though he labors under the disadvantage of compari- | #£0n with his lamented brother, a contrast neces- sarily somewhat anfavorable to him. } The opera was performed in good style (with | the exception of a rather inadequate “anvil | chorus"), and the orchestra and chorus were | by many degrees the best we have lately had here. To-night we have Cordier, (already a first- class fayorite here,) Lorini, Morensi, Brignoli, Susini, Barili, Amodio, and Dubreul, in Mo- zart’s great opera of Don Giovanni, and the public desire to see it is expressed by the steady rush to-day at Metzerott’s for seats. Oy Monday night Un Ballo in Maschera, and on Tu sday night Dinorah—and “goat.” #2 Robert Tyler, of Frederick ; H. D. Hinter- moch, of Baltimore county; S. D. Fletcher, of Baltimor® city ; Joseph Goodrich and Edward | ‘T. Stone, of St. Mary’s county ; James Johnson, ot Virginia; Thomas Richardson, of North- umberland county, Va,; William Allen, of Weertmoreland county, Va., and Wm. F. Hicks, | of Dorchester county, Maryland, were arrested a day or two ago im Baltimore on the charge of | disloyalty. ° &7 Shillington, Odeon Building, favors us With advance copies of the attractive May | numbers of the Atlantic Monthly and Peterson's Ladies’ Magazine. The boat is intended to be usedas aram, and is provided with along, sharp bow, with the jackstaff set back upon the turret, which is placed in the forward part of the vessel. This turret will contain four guns—one !!-inch and one 9-inch Dahlgren, and one 200 and one 100- peund rifled Parrot. These will be placed on a revolving table, worked by steam. Besides these guns, there will be two smaller pieces aft, and some 25-pound howitzers on each side. The Choctaw has been placed in charge of Lieut. Commanding Ramsey. DANGEROUS COUNTERFEIT CrnccLaTED — Two dollar treasury bills altered to twenties were largely circulated in Philadelphia on Thursday. It is stated that the alterations ‘were so successfully done that the closest ex- amination was necessary to detect the fraud. Twenty-dollar government bills should be closely inspected before they are taken. By ; holding the counterfeit bills before a strong | light the alterations may be detected. Yesterday, at 1a. m., & party of rebels seized a citizen of Fairfax named Sherman, at his re- sidence in the vicinity of Dranesville, anda few hours afterwards are said to have hang him. If hung, Mr. Sherman leaves a wife and eight helpless children We entertain no doubt that if thus murdered for his adherance to ‘he cause of the Union, ample and speedy retalia- tion will be the result. THE MURDER OF SHERMAN. The following telegrain was received at the office of the Provost Marshal of the War De- partment last night: Farrrax Court Hovsg, April 17.—To Col. L. ¢. Baker.—Sir: Ihave to inform you that Haryey Sherman was captured Isst night at his houge, about 10 o'clock, by nine of Mosby's men. R. S. SPAULING, Scout. Another dispatch was received this forenoon confirming the above, also a note addressed to Col. Baker, from Sherman's wife. | A telegram from Gen. Stahl states that he had eent forward acayalry force to intercept the captors of Sherman. The report has reached the city that Sher- man was executed this morning at daylight. It is brought by a secession woman, who saysshe witnessed the execution. Sherman had been captured once before at Leesburg, and received a shot in the arm from his pursuers. He was released on parole, and when seized was on a visit to his family. | i CULP R COURT HOUSE, A dispatch from New York states that the Tribune of this morning alleges that our cay- j alry, after a brief engagement with the rebel troops thereabout, took Culpeper Court House i a day or two since. Though we believe that no such information ; has been received here, (or in New York,) we shall not be surprised if this be true; insomuch as, with the change in the weather occurring a week ago, it is very likely that Generals Stone- mun, Averill and Pleasanton would be likely to extend the scope of their reconnoissances in that direction, where it has for some time been apparent that the rebels proposed to make no stand, from the fact that they have been for weeks fortifying the line of the Rapidan, twelye } miles in its rea OLDIERS’ REST. At Capt. C. M. Camp's office, Soldiers’ Rest, there haye reported during the present week, 40 substitutes, 9 recruits, 336 convalescents, 416 furloughed men, 1) stragglers, 47 deserters, | and 132 in detached parties. There have been | sent to regiments in the fleld, 956; to cenyales- | cent camp, 305; to Camp Parole, 4; and to Alex- | andria (deserters), 47. GORDONSVILLE. Washington is tull of a rumor saying that General Stoneman’s command has penetrated | rebeldom to Gordonsville, and taken that im- j portant point. We haye not been able to learn that there is substantial basis for this story. REPORTED FOR DUTY. The 39th Mass. regiment reported for duty yesterday, and were assigned to the quarters near the Circle, recently evacuated by the 169th N.Y. MExiIcan NrEws.—Semi-ofticial advices from the city of Mexico to the 23d of March have been received. The report of Comonfert’s defeat 1s not confirmed, but it is stated that the French have invested Puebla and hold several important points near and around the city, commanding the roads both to Vera Cruz, and the capital. Comonfort was beyond the river Atoyac, towards the city of Mexico. He had been reinforced by three brigades, oneof which ‘was commanded by Senor Mata, late Minister to Washington. He had also been reinforced by 1500 cavalry from Puebla. An attack was expected by the Mexicans, who were in strong hopes of success. Have To ComETo It.—The chivalry have always_affected the greatest aversion to the Yankee dish of baked beans, but in the present food dearth they have to bring their unwilling noses to the grindstone, and we find the Lynch- burg Virginian demonstrating elaborately tha; pork and beans is the cheapest and most nu- tritious food to be had. We shall next expect to see the Confeds coming over to cod-fish! APPornTED.— Mr. Hallet Kilbourne, late chief clerk of the Census Office, has been ap- pointed chiet clerk of the Interior Department, vice Walton J. Smith, resigned; and Dr. Brown, disbursing clerk of the Census Office, has been appointed chief Clerk of that office. PERSONAL.—NSecretary Chase left the city to- day in the 11 o’clock train for Philadelphia. The duties of the office will be discharged during his absence by Assistant Secretary Har- rington. LOCAL NEWS. ae OrpHANs’ Court, Judge Purcell.—This morn- ing, the will of the late Mrs. Sarah T. Hughes was fully proyed by J. Carroll Brent and other witnesses. The property, amounting toseyeral thousand dollars, is left mostly to her daughter, Anna L. Wooster, wife of Lewis Wooster, and other relatives, and her grand nephew, Andrew Forrest Queen, is left executor. Letters of guardianship were issued to Mrs. Susan Whitney; and testamentary te Zephaniah English, one of the executors of John Withers. During the session of the Court, Charles J. Devaughn, accompanied by his wife, come into the court and stated that he is theson of Thomas S. Deyaughn, deceased, and that in order to sell some real estate, it would be necessary that a guardian should be appointed for him, he being under age. Judge Purcell, smilingly, suggested that if legal and his wife being of age, it would be well to appoint the wife as guurdian to the husband, remarking that, in his opinion, in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred it would be right and proper that the wife should be the guardian of the hus- band. Mr. Devaughn readily assented to this rrangement, but the Judge not being eure that the appointment would be according to Gunter, reserved his deaision natil Tuesday next. ass Ficut iv THE “HAY Stack."—Yesterday afternoon 3 fight occurred in Madame Hay’s, 537 Twelfth street, and Roundsman Tait and Officer Vieamyer arrested G. O'Bryan, Chris- topher Holland and John Bates. At the tria! before Justice Clayton a stout young German, named Chas. Coleman, swore that Bates com- menced a fight, and that O’Bryan and Holland ran in the back way, and there was a general brandishing of chairs. Coleman says the Mad- ame was gone to the West for a short time, and left him in charge of the house. The Justice dismissed O'Bryan and fined Holland and Bates $1.58. The Justice thea began & lecture to Coleman on the disgraceful position in which he placed himself—a bawdy house keeper pro tempore The very evidence be had given was sufficient to fine him for participation in the disorder, and his confess.on of temporiry authority in the house is an aggravation of the effence. The Justice had not concluded when the parties just tried and fined charged Coleman ‘with disorderly conduct, and they proved he bad atu! share in the row. He was fined 32, the Justice expressing a regret that he could not make it $20. é —_.—_——_ Tux Late HannipaL HaMLin.—The body of the late Hannibat Hamlin (a relative of the Vice Presid-at) was in! in the Con, sional burial ground yesterday. mong those in atten ..nce Rapa nag Gee ee urley, Rev. scening, Rev. in Pierpont, Jui Underw oi, Hou, RB. This morning the case was laid befere Justice Thompson, when the complainant stated that the reputation of the prisoner im Baltimore and at Annapolis is bad. D. Williams, of this city, has been thus far the most successful ia furnishing designs for the new national car- rency. In the Common Council last evening, resolution guaranteeing $50,000 for outlet hi to the Chesapeake and Uhio canal was taken up, and after considerable discussion was laid onthe table. It was argued that the amount would be entirely insufficient te build the locks, and ‘hat the canal cosapamy was in no condi- tion at present to furnish the balance necessary, which would be not less than $25,000, A communication was received trom the tax collector, in answer to a request of the Council to furnish them with a list of the names of all persons who had paid their taxes on real estate and left unpaid their school taxes, and whether in any instance he had entorced the law against said delinquents, stating that he had not en- forced the law in any instance, and positively refused, in language not at all complimentary, to furnish the names of delinquents; which was, by unanimous yote, returned to him as a disrespectful document.
