AN ARTISTIC EXHinition of two hundred dissolying views, illustrative of the most striking subjects of Biblical history and of the jeading events of the great rebellion, will com- mence this evening at Odd Fellows’ Hall, Seventh street. The exhibition is for the bene- fit of Campbell Hospital Batt at Temperance H: ll, under the auspices of the Washington Armorer’s Association. This is the first party of this association, and promises to be a grand affair. - => FIRE.—About six o'clock yesterday afternoon fire was discovered issuing trom’ the upper etory of the dwelling of Mr. W. H. Ward, on Sixth street, between E and treets, and in a | short time the entire attic story and the roofs ofthe adjoining houses of Mr. Joha F. Ellis | and Dr. Hill were burnt. The firemen were on the ground promptly, and worked manfully to subdue the Hames, but the fire being between the rafters, they were obliged to deluge the | premises with water, thereby seriously dama- ging the buildings and furniture, particularly the property of Messrs. Ward and Ellis. In one of the rooms of Mr. Ward’s building eyery- thing was destroyed, including a valuable library belonging to Mr. Orme and Mr. Ward's son. The most damage was done tothe furniture and the plastering of the houses, and the lossas amounts to about $1,000—of Mr. Ward about $2,000, of Mr, Ellis about $1,500, and Dr. Hill about $500. They are all fully insured, Mr. Ward in the Mutualand Dr. ilillin the Fire- man’s Companies, of this city, and Mr. Ellis in another company. The fire orizinated from a detective flue, which was burnt out yesterday morning, and probably at that tim? the fire commenced burning. The warrant was executed, and the parues were taken before Justice Ferguson, comprising the landlady—A manda Wilkinson— And six other females. The evidence of several with ling to prove enough to hold the | females, they were dismissed, upon their promise to vacate the premises within two weeks. An officer is posted at the house to pre- veut their receiving visitors in the meantime. ‘The inmates claim that there are three families in the house, who all rent from Mrs. Wilkinson, and are entirely distinct from her family. Jus- tice Ferguson held Mrs. Wilkinson to turther hearing, upon a charge of keeping a bawdy house. The prisoner is not supposed to be principal, but Was arrested on suspicion of being an accom- plice. a Serrove Ficut.—Apbont 12 o'clock last night @ fight occurred near Douglas Hospital, in swhieh some <ix or eight persons were engaged. A young man was Greadfully beaten, and it was feared his injuries would result fatally. Bricks and stones were used in the fight, and several lookers-on received injuries. © ‘The guards arrested Robert French and Daniel Lynch, who were sent to the Fourth Ward station; and this morning Patrick Downey ‘went to the station to see about them, and he also was arrested asa party. O., April 6. At the meeting of our Board of Common Council Friday evening, the following were appropriately referred: A message from the Mayor recommending that a flag footway be | placed across Fifth street, at its intersection With High: also, informing the Board that the Mayor of Washington has certain plans and | estimates of market houses, which he would be pleased to submit to the inspection of an agent uppointed by this corporation; an account of James F. Escex for the livery of the horse be- longing to the corporation; an account of J. Frissel for work, repairing bridge; a communi- cation from Jos. Reynolds proposing to puar- chase or lease the lot on which his cooper shop ; Stands, also an adjacent lot. ‘The following, in additicn to those published en Saturday, were passed :—A resolution rela- tive tothe payment of certain claims; one in fayor of Wm. B. Ellis, after striking out the Werds “the fine” and inserting in lieu thereof scone half the fine.” The following were returned from the Board of Aldermen passed, and were signed :—A res- olution to pay certain claims; one directing payment of certain damages to James Adams; one in relation to bridges over the canal; one authorizing a new floor in the Mayor's and clerk's office; one directing the payment of a judgement to J.N. Fearson, and one granting privilege for the erection of trestle work across ater street. Tho resolution relative to the payment of the porter of the Orphans’ Court was also passed. The revolution instructing the Committee on streets to report a bill for the thorough repair of Bridge street, was adopted.
