SE THE EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON OITY: | WEDNESDAY. +++ APRIL 8, 1863¢ Es = | @7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. | BEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TBLE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. i SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. | The Jatelligencer deprecates the attack on the President made by the Committee on the Con- duct of the War. } The Chronicle says of the Connecticut election: «It is rare that upon a contest like this so mary superior interests should depend; that, to the yote of a Commonwealth sending but four | members to the Congress of the United States, the attention of yas! money combinations, and even of foreign diplomatists, and, of course, the public enemy, should be turned; and reads in the result an ample vindication of the men who are at the head of the Government of the United States. OUR MILITARY BUDGET Ss CHARLESTON. It would be easy in the present feverish state ofthe public mind to attract atteation to our columns by sensation rumors in’ relation to the alleged attack upon Charleston, but we should be doing injustice to our readers thereby, tor the simple truth is, that up to the present writ- ing, (1 p. m.) nothing whatever is known here ia respect to the reported movements, beyond the supposition that our forces during the last part of last week were engaged in getting into position in the vicinity of Charleston, and that sometime between the 7th and 12th the real at- tack was likely to be entered upon. So our readers, unless they wish to be gulled A by the flonting canards of the hour, must be | content to wait a little. SECRETARY STANTON. It is understood that Seeretary Stanton has left the city to attend the funeral of Mr. Wal- cot, late Assistant Secretary of War. Mr. Walcot was a faithful, laborious, ener- getic officer, and this mark of respect paid to hie memory, is creditable alike to the deceased ! aad to Secretary Stanton. NAVY YARD. The King Phillip and Baltimore, the first from the Lower Potomac, and the latter from Fortress Monroe, arrived up last night, but bring ne news. —+___ Soke OF THE CLERKS OF THE QUARTER- MASTER'S DEPARTMENT.—This affair, which came off at the Willar’ Hall last night, brought together a very ple .sut and good-looking company, and with neahall for dancing purposes, and such: ind as Withers’, it is not strange that thata cable recreation was | indulged in to a consid .ableextent during the | course of the night. Nessrs. Sykes & Chad- wick contributed their incidental quota to the enjoyment of the affair after the handsome way they have; and that magnificent supply of Roman punch ladJed forth in one of the dressing rooms, was more than probably a dispensation of theirs. | Mayor Wallich was present, W. B. Shaw, Esq., of the New York press; Major Rucker, brother to Col. Rucker; and quite a number of assistant quartermasters, including the Capts. Hartz, (brothers,) Capt. Robertson, (of Mass.,) Capt. Moore and Capt. Thomas, perhaps as handsome a military quintette as is often seen on the came floor. We noticed present, too, a full representation of leading citizens, especially of the younger portion, who are yet inclined to a good dance under favorable auspices. The supper was furnished by Potentini, and emtraced all the first-class delicacies spread | on first-class occasions hy first-class caterers, | which is all that need be gaid on that head. { The managers ef this pleasant affair were: Committee of Arrangements—Messrs. W. W- Wirt, W. H. Wiggins, John Crowley, Joe. ¥" Potts. Committee of Invitation and Reception— | Messrs. W. A. Buchanan, Chas. E. Wilson, S. Bootes, Owen Thorn, M. C. Addoms, H. J. | Robinson. | New Mesic.—From John F. Ellis, No. 336 | Pennsylvania avenue, between Ninth and Tenth streete, we have received the follow- ing popular piecgs:—* Dear mother call me home,''a new song by Finley Johnson; “Whis- | pering Schottisch,” by Magruder, «« When this . cruel war is over,” “There is no one like a mother,” a domestic ballad by Sep. Winner; | “Can I go dearest mother,” a new patriotic song; ‘Tom Thumb’s Wedding,” a song dedi- | cated to Tom and his wife. ee ie ie New Pvsiications.—From H. Clay Stier, 473 Seventh strect, we have a copy of Miss Braddon’s powerfully written story, ‘Aurora Floyd,” published frem advance sheets by Pe- terson & Bro., Philadelphia. | From Franck Taylor we have Part 25 of Frank Moore's Rebellion Record,” which as a work of reference is invaluable to all who would keep thoroughly informed as to the events of the war. @7 Released prisoners who have recently | arrived from Richmond repoft the occurrence there of a formidable bread riot, in which several thousand starvixg women were actors. They broke into putlic and private stores and | helped themselves. At the opening of the re- | bellion, it will be remembered, the leaders pre- dicted that these riots would be of frequent oc- currence in the North, occasioned by the want | of cotton. Who sniffers first ? REGULATIONR CONCERNING COAL OILS, &C. The Commissioner of Internal Reyenue has decided that oil manufactured without distil Jation from paraffine and benzole will be sub ct to a duty of three per centum ad valorem. | Coal illuminating oil manufactured by the distillation or redistillation of benzole, parafiine | er other bituminous substances is subject toa duty of ten cents per gallon. PELsONAL.—Among those who united with Rev. Dr. Adams’s Presbyterian Church, on Madison Square, New York, last Sunday, were General McClellan and Mrs. Marcy and her @aughter—the latter the General's mother-in- | jaw and sister-in-law, who joined by letter— the former by profession. West Vircinia—The vote in Tyler county Va., on the new Constitution was 716 for and 5 against it. This vete, added to the votes of the Tyler county soldiers in the Federal army, will exceed she whole vote cast when the ordinance of secession was voted on. Sg Tuatr AtteweT TO Destroy tux Navy Yarp.—A city cotemporary bas a story of a terrible Guy Fawkes attempt to blow up the Navy Yard on Saturday night. The whole thing amounts to jusi th About twelve o'clock on Saturday night an Irishman named Davis was found in the Navy Yard, near the laboratory, and arrested by one of the watchmen and placed in the guardhouse. At the time he was found he was very drunk, and had in his poekets a pipe, piece of tobacco, and box of matches. On Monday he was re- leased. He stated that he had been at work in Alexandria, and was on his way to Baltimore, but getting drunk he could not find the cars, and wandered around; getting in the Navy Yard by way of the marsh on the west side, which at low tide is sometimes passable, and was found as stated above, by the watchman on duty there. Some persons made out of the arrest a dreadful story to the effect that the prisoner was passed in by the guard, with whom he used seme chicanery, and that his purpose was to blow up the magazine and set the yard on fire, but was hailed by a second guard and caught, whose timely interposition prevented the man trom putting his design into execution. a SECOND WARD STATI JASES.—Edw’d Am- bush, threats; for hearing.
