Our loss was one private of the Seventh Pennsylvania cavalry killed and two slightly Wounded. General Stanley returned to Murfreesboro by way of Lebanon, capturing six prisoners at the letter point. THE WAR IN NORTH CAROLINA. Gen, Foster Surrounded and Cut off from Reinforcements. New York, April 8._The Post learns thaten the 4th inst. Gen. Foster was at Littie Wash- ington with a brigade and a regiment of North Carolina troops and some other troops, and were virtually surrounded by the resels, who had erected batteries on the Tar river, between Newbern and Little Washington, which the naval force of wooden gunboats are unable to pass. Itis understood that a battle has taken place between Fosterand the rebels, but nothing definite is known. Heavy firing had been heard, lasting from Wednerday night to Friday night, evidently fiom the rebel batteries. Gen. Foster's means of defence are deemed ample, having a fort and entrenchments, with sufficient ammunition and provisions. Large reinforcements are in trans- ports below the batteries, unable to reach Fos- | ter tor want of some naval force competent to take them. It is reported that Gen. Foster sent to Fortress Monroe some time since for naval reinforcements. He expected troops to be sent trom Suffolk.
