PHE EVENING STAR. | En = THE YAZOO EXPEDITION, iN The Advance Down the Tallahatchfe Riv- | erat val Above, Keres Sitrmistrae; | barkation ef the my—Skirmis' — The Rebels Fall Back. ‘oy ‘"NRAR FORT PEMBERTON, March 11. —{0or- respondence New York Herald.J—Your readers will remember that in my last-correspondence, under date of the &th instant, I informed them that we had eucceeded in getting our war ves- sels and transports through the Coldwater | ee tothe junction of the Tallahatchie, and there assembling ready for an advance. Wa have since pee ished on down the Talla- hatehie, along wh: itis comparatively clear sailing. I have not time now to describe the yoyage, bunt will leave that to a futnre letter. | Suffice it to say we are now in a little better condition as regards our vessels than we were, when we came out of the crocked, dreary Cold- water: We have this morning succeeded in arriving within ‘six miles above Greenwood, a smali village of Mississippi, situated on the Yazoo Fiver, a short distance below the junction of the Yallobusha with the Tallahatchie river At thie junction the rebels have erected a fort, | which they have named Fort Pemberton, and this work wy Pare to taike before we can get own to the lower Yazoo. ‘When we arrived at the spot from: where I arh writing the army at once debarked for the purpose of moying overland. We commenced skirmishing when fm one mile from the Tiver, but af-r a litt fighting the enemy fell back to their fortifications. This rnse did not dlind ve to their plans, andithe guuboats moved forward by water while the army are advancing to the fortifications by land. A fight is expected momentarily while I write; but as a boatis about toJeave for above I deem it advisable to sena_you this short let- ter to kéep your readers posted as to events. The battle will certainly take place, if the en- emy will fight, long before you receive this communication. * The rebel workis well located, and is mounted with three heavy guns. There are yarious estimates as to the strength of the rebel force at | this point; but from all 1 can gather it appears that they number from seven to ten thousand men, VYhen the struggle commences we are more likely to ascertain their real strength. PRENTICEANIA. A good many of the Southern women, itis said, are anxious toenter therehel army. Some of them might make formidable soldiers. If we may judge trom their conduct toward Federal prisoners, their hearts are so hard that a minie | bullet would glance off from them in a tangent. If we would make a peace that will stick, we must first do some good sticking with the bayonet. The rebels erect some of their fortifications with much toil but in this cold weather every one of them has his shiver-de-fresze without working for it. He doesn't labor fur it, he labors under it. a Punch is taking off the Aurora Floyd,” “No name,” “Tangled Skein,” &c. school of literature very amusingly in the publication, in weekly parts, of a “Tale of the Times,” called SMekeanna, or the White Wit- ness.” It is illustrated in the Pre-Raphael style, so much affected just now, by the Lon- don weeklies, by way of enhancing the weird interest of those startling tales, and of course, the great requisite, a bigamy, is not wanting to make the satire complete. Here is aspeci- | men: Sir Lionel’s carriage was at the door. “Farewell, wia Bettina,” he said, pressing his | wile tobis heart. “1 shailcome back when I | return.” . | “I doubt thee not, Lionel,” was his weeping { ladys reply, and the coachman, having fer- vently embraced the calm butemotional butler, | ascended to his seat in the rumble, and the | vehicle was secon lost to view. Two girlish figures, each dressed in a cul de sac, approached. i “Mamma,” they cried, “Will you not trust | us now?” j “I will,” replied Lad neeia; come Evelina.” Study. { “Listen,” said Lady Bettina, “to my secret. | !
