The Republican devotes its space to-day to abuse in every variety, original and quoted, of the Star. Some time ago, in weeding our exchange list, we had occasion to drop a worthless paper called the “Ohio State Journal.” The result * is a long string of slang aimed at the Star by that paper, to which the Republican, in appa- rent default of anything better wherewith to fl its columns, gives place to-day. &7 It is estimated that one thousand com- missioned officers are now absent from their regiments without proper leave. Gen. Halleck hos cetermined to adopt the most stringent measures to cure this laxity of discipline, and all offenders will either be ignominiously dis- missed from the service or else tried by court- martial for desertion in the face of the enemy. A long list of names for dismissal has already teen prepared. The most comprehensive and decisive messures are also to be taken for the arrest and punishment of deserters from the ranks. Internal Revexve.—tit haying been vari- ously stated that the Commissioner of Internal ‘Revenue had estimated the receipts for revenue during the present year at $360,000,900, there is authority for saying that no such estimate has been made, and in no instance is it thought ‘will the receipts exceed one hundred and fifty or one hundred and seventy-five millions. s7 Gov Andrew has, it is said, subm tied the proposal is President Lircoln to place an iron-clad man-of-war in Boston harbor. The Iatest information from Harper's Ferry reprerents Stonewall Jackson as “falling back.” This means that he is hasfening to join Lee's main army with his command, we take it, as was anticipated in yesterday's lar. | However, whether he is doing so or not, wre feel very sure that he will hardly venture an attempt to make a serious raid in this direction | or in that of Maryland, Lecause he must know | that there are ample Union troops in both to | meet him promptly and successfully. The fact that his late movements have been sv long | shrouded in mystery, proves, to our compre- | hension at least, that his force is much less than is generally thought within our lines. The force of Sigel, Gen. Heintzleman’s command, and the troops at Harper's Ferry, and elsewhere on the Upper Potomac, are so disposec and so kept in readiness for a movement in «ny direc- tion his possible movements may render neces- sary, as that the good people of Maryland, who have been anticipating kis disagreeable pres- ence among them, may dismiss their current fears, we assure them. ti THE LONG BRIDGE. Gen. Heintzleman's orders (published else- where in this afternoon's Star) closingthe Lonz Bridge to the travel of the public is occasioned by the many accidents of late occurring upon it through the meeting of the Government's railroad trains and citizens’ teams unaccu-- tomed to close proximity to locomotives; always resulting in delaying the progress of the former more or less.
