Maxassas Junction, Nov. 18..-By this eve- wing Gen. Burnside will doubtless have estab- lished his headquarters in Fredericksburg, for tie time being. His advance probably took poserssion of that town yesterday evening. ‘The transfer of his base of supplies, incident to this splendidly executed flank movement of bis army, has certainly been admirably exe- uted, so faras the management of this railroad’s part of the programme ix concerned. The movement must haye taken thp rebels entirely by surprise, as they undombtedly expected a direct approach on Gordonsville, Which they had prepared to defend desperately atthe Rapidan. According to what they must mow take Burnside’s programme to be, they aust hasten to meet him—at the crossing of the two railroads—the Fredericksburg and Richmond and the Central Railroad, in Han- ©ver county, about twenty miles from Rich- mond, if not before he reaches that point. Ii Burnside pushes right ahead he may reach Hanover Junction probably before they can transfer sufficient of their army to it to offer him serious resistance there: thus compelling them to fall back nearer Richmond: risking the main battle for the possession of that city al- most immediately under its fortifications, which its ron-comtatant inhabitants will hardly reli-h. It is taken for granted kere that our anthori- ties will to-day abandon this (Orange and Alexandria) railroad beyond this point, and Soon to Fsirfax. The Potomac mustso rise from y' sterday’s rain as to afford ixsurance against @n ath mptof Jeckson to make a serious raid ver into Maryland. This, in turn, will be likely to cause the re- turn of Sigei’s force nearer to Washington; from whence it can operate tomuch greater ad- ¥antage, os the reserve of Burnside’s army, than as at present posted out*in the vicinity of Thoroughfare Gap. ' ——>— STONEWALL JACKSON LE}T OUT IN THE COLD. ——»————_ BURNSIDE TO BE IN RICHMOND IN TEN DAYS. > A glance at any good map of Virginia will | show the reader that the fine march made by Burneide on Sundayand yesterday has brought his army from ten to twenty miles nearer Rich- mond than the main portion of thg Rebel army was, probably, this morning. Else the latter moved to counteract Burn- tide’s movement, sooner, much sooner, than could reasonably hare been expected; as it was | doubtless twenty-four hours afer Burnside moved before the rebel generals comprehended | BURNAIDH ANBAD H ARMY IN THE i - i x i what his movement meant, and then it proba- | bly took them tweaty-four hours more—or un- ul last night—before they could get fairly in motion to head Burnside off from Richmond. ! We now believe that he will get to Hanover | Junction at least before they can throw @ sufficient force before it to dispute its pos- session by the Army of the Potomac. Much however depends. we opine, upon the | energy with which our construction corps prorecules the work before it; as supplics of {| all kinds must speedily follow Burnside, te { eecure the triumph of his plans. The Rebel General Jackson has been fairly { maneuvered out into the cold. It is hardly possible that his corps can participate in the Frent battle for the possession of Richmond. If he haa, as is asserted 70,000 men, then he has quite half the whole Rebelarmy of the Poto- mac, clear up at the head of the Walley; at least twelve day's fair marching trom Richmond, with Burnzide’s army not six day's march from it. Butit i> plain te us that this 70,600 story ix Without fonndation, and that he has not 29,900 troops; if more than 15,000—a large number to venture to Nolate so far nway from where Lee knew well he must sooner or later fight the decisive battle of the war. Five days shauld sen that great battle over, and Burnside should have Richmond in less than ten days, as the campaign seems now to pr - However, we repeat, much indeed seem to depend om the energy aud efticsmncy of the Construction Corps.
