TA Re FROM TIE SOUTH. Capture of Galveston, Texas. Southern papers cive the follewing particn- lars of the capture of Galveston, Texas, by Me Federals: A Confederate dispatch to the Grenada ( Miss.) Appeal says: “About two p. m., on October 4 a Federal steamer crossed the bar, with flag of truce flying. Our battery at Fort Point opened on them, when they fired several breadsides at it, and passed up into the bay. The battery and fort at Fort Point were then set on fire and ated. oNtThe troops were all marched to the depot and sent to Virginia Point. The Federal steamers are tying all tezether about a mile down, and our men are communicating with them. GALVESTON, Oct. 4—5 p. m.—At forty min- ates past seven o'clock, p. m., before the flag of trucr boat got to the fleet, five steamers started in off the bar, with Hags of truce flying at thetr mastheads. Ax they approached Fort Point our batteries opened on them, and they returned it. The second shot from the steamer struck our gun at the poimt, and the third shot dis- mounted if @ur troops destroyed all the work-. The stenxmer came into the bay and our ba teries at Kuhn’s wharf opened on them, but all the shot fell short. The troops immediately commenced evacu- ating the city, and the city presented # scene of atter confusion: and as I write, the depot is full of people trying to get away. The Federals notified wx that they wonld give us time to move the women and children, if we erected no more batteries. All in confusion at present. {From the Richmond Dispatch, Oct. 25} The Federal fleet off Galveston, Texas, at- tacked that city on the 4th instant. A Federal steamer passed the battery at Fort Point under a heavy fire, and laid to at the central wharf. The battery was then destroyed by the Con: erate troops, who marched to Virginia P The troops in Galveston leftand went same point. The Federal steamers lying off Galveston, five in number, gave the authorities of the town four days to remove the women and children; at the expiraiion of which time they would sheli the place, if it was not sur- rendered. The cause of the attack, or rather the initiation of the assault, was the firing inio the steamer Harriet Lane by the guns at Fort Point. The Harriet Lane steamed in under a flag of truce, but went too far, and was fired into. The i t telegram from ; dated on the 6th instant, and, speaking of the movements of the Federals, says: They landed yesterday again atthe point; but baye not permanently oceuyied it, having a wholesome tear of a cavalry dash. There are & sufficient number of troops on the island to repel any landing. While the enemy occupy their present position Colonel Cook is engaged, under orders from Col. Debray, in removing such machinery and foundry works as can be got off, and it is not probable that the enemy will find much on the island of value. Orders have also been issurd to inform the people that shonld onr troops leave the island, eommnnication will at once be cut off, and those who remain will be compelled to depend COOKERY IN THE SICK ROOM.
