On Friday he sppeared ia the vicinity of Bolivar. His force was ma!niy mounted infantry—an organization sdmirably adapted to rapid movements and operations in un extended region. On Saturday he was salled by a reconnoltering party under Lieut. Col. Hogg, of ny Loar iillnois Cavalry, when oc- curred the riiliant engagement of which you have bexrd all the particulars that have been re- celved here, in which A lost his life. Saturday night,; ther rebel forces were nasi, Fe up, and througbcut Sunday and Sunday night, the railroad north of Bolivar was kept uaceasingly busy in transporting rebel sol ._ In the mean- ime, Villipigue quietly forded the Hatchie river, ta polnt a short distance west of Bolivar, and hed on nerthward with bis column, making festation at Medon Station, half way between Bolivar and Jackson, thus effecting a d'sruption in communication with Bolivar by veil, and Interposing bis own force againat the march of reluforcements to that . Subse- quently it was ascertained that Price, with a large army, was bebind Villipigne, and as soon as the latter had crossed tbe Hatchie, the former stepped into bis old cam) ing gro , where his forces rend zvoused. ving brought up his army, Price proceeded to dispose of them so as eifectualiy aud completely to invest the little town of Bolivar. Villipigne, in the meantime, pushed forward from Mendon, threatening Jackson, Sesesine the railroad in his march, and burning severe carloads of cotton that were standing upon the track at way stations esterday two regiments of Illinois troeps, the 13th and 20tb, stationed at Estapsula, were sent out to attack Villipigne in his rear, They came upon him about seven miles from Jackson, end after a short engagement, at most wonderful odds in faver of the enemy, gave him a severe drubbing, puttin: bim toan ingloriousrout. We lost about ha: dozen in Killed in this affair, and less than fifty wounded. The success of the ement re- flects tLe highest credit upon Col. nis, of the 13th, who had command. The enemy left 110 dead bodies on the field, and their wounded are estimated at from 220 to 309. ‘This affair by no means terminates the attack on Jackson. Undoubtedly Villipigne was taken unawares, end his forces must have been thrown into confusion. It is scarcely credible thgt two broken regiments could put to flight and perma- nently disorganize a well organized force of ten thoussnd men. Villipigne, indeed, is already known to heve reorganized hie men and still menaces Jackson. While he holds this attitude Sennen cannot be sent from there to Bol- var Bolivar is well fortified, and yeeros natural advantages of defence that will engage all the skill, muscle and metal the enemy can bring to bear at present to take it. Its garrison consists of about 7,000 men, including some of the choicest Tegiments of the Army of the West. It is nodoubt the enemy’s intention to take the place, if such a thing be tole, but the small Posted there for its defence will givea good account of ves.
