[Correspondence Cincianat! Gasette, Sept 5 | PRELIMINAMY TO THE BATTLE. Friday evening Col. Metcalfe’s cavalry recon- Doitered the county between Richmond and Big HAM, the pisce from which they so ingtoriousty fled the Saterday previous. When in the vicinity of their former exploits, they encountered their old enemy, Col Scott, of the Ist Louisiana cav- = who j;romply gave chase, when Col. Met- calfe’s men again turned tail, leaving their cal- lant commander to kring up the rear. This time, bowever, they did not run without fring a gun; but they might »s well have done 20, for when they turned in their suddles and emptied their rifles they only end: ngered the life of thetr pal- lant leader, who was thus between two fires. A small artillery duel immediately ensued, which resulted in the capture of one of the enemy’s howitzers, after which they withdrew. There is no denbi now that tbe enemy baite.! their hook With this insig- nificant plece of artillery—that they Permitted our men to capture it, in order to encourage them to make a stand, and, if ible, induce them to care rate the country stili further from their base. n this they were pertially successful, for although — Large —- = —— the retreating foe. e ordere: s briga pass t ¢ they were. on their arms. ine night where wens sau vaste — ROGERSVILLE. ext morning our scouts reported th: enemy advancing In force towards Rogersville. Louder and fas‘er grew the reports as I neared the scene of tetion. I could clearly distinguish the sharp, trashing thunder of our Rodman guns from that produced by the enemy’s Pieces, and was well satisfied that our artillerists were doing their duty. 16th Indiana, from Gen. Cruft’s brigade, which was compoved of the 12th and 16th Indias 95th Obio, and 18th Kentucky, had already ad- vanced toward the scene of ‘action, and was thrown on our extreme left, while the 69th Indiana eceupied the extreme right. It was now evident that a general engagement must ensue, and the ‘95th Obio and 18th Kentucky were also ordered up, leaving the 12th Indiana asa reserve. About nine o’clock, s number of mounted clvil- lans, who bad ridden out to see the fight, took the alarm, and turning their horses’ heads in the direction of town, gailoped back at the top of their speed. The drivers of ambulances, too, caught the infeciion, and could not be persuaded to return to the field. To add to the confusion, our artillery, now out of ammunition, had to be Withdrawn to prevent its falling into the hands oftheenemy. THE FIGHT AT MOORR’s FARM. During the bettie near Rogersville, our caval- Ty, about 500 strong, was d-awn =. in Hue on the farm of # Mr. Moore, about a mile north of the scene of the first conflict. Manson, the senjor officer on the field, to muxe another stand. At this critical momeut, the i2th Indiana, wuich had been ordered up, came along on the doubie-quick, and materially assisted in pre- venting a veneral rout. J shall never forget the sight of that gallant body of men, rushing by at a right-eboulder shift, thelr new Springtield rifles shimmering in the rays of a sultry August sun. Many of them were driving on to a swift destruction, and they knew it, but they never halted once, nor siackened their speed till they arrived on the ground. By this time the other regiments had fallen back to the new pcsition, and were ya Te- formed in excellent order. A fresh supply of ammunition bad arrived for the artillery, and everything wes in readiness for a second engage- ment, which was not long delayed. THE FIGHT AT THE CEMETERY. itwas two o’clock in the afterneon before our third line of battle was formed. The position chosen, like thet at Mr. Moore’s, was an elevated one, but the rebels had the advantage of woods and corn-telds, and for a time kept up amurder- ous fire upon cur men, sustaining at firet but little loss themselves. This time they fought us with an Arkanses brigade. Here our artiliery was used te good advantage, end finally drove the enemy from their shelter, wnen they formed on our right, our boys meantime pouring into their ranks some destructive volleys. For a time neither horse nor man couia breast the storm, and the firing which bad been going on foraome time sleckened, until a lull in the storm permitted Its Tesumption. Birney’s brigade of Kearney’s di- vision was ordered out in line of ba'tle. Thi had not been in place long before Gen. Birney observed that one or two regiments on his right, belonging to some other brigade, had left the Position and retired from the field. The fact ‘Was reported to Gen. Kearney, and more troops were asked for to fi!lthe dangerous gap. Kearney declared it imposaible that such an unwarranted Movement should bave been made, but to satisfy himself gailoped off to receunoitre. He insd- vertently passed through and beyond our lines, and wag seen no more alive Birney turned to bring up the 38th New York, and pat them in that part of the front, and having filled his line of battle held ground and afte: ward Tepuised the enemy at the point of the bayonet, and drove him from the field. The greund was cut up into gullies, from which, as a secure cover, the rebe! sbarpshooters fought us with despera- tion. Hours passed, nut Kearney did not appear, and after meking search fur aad near for him, Gen. Birney concluded that he had been takeu prisoner. Early the next morning, however, a flag of truce came tn from General Lee, with word that Kearney’s body had been found, and would be delivered up. Gen. Heintzelman at once de- talled Major Birney, commanding 57th Pennsy! vaaia, to receive it, and the Major started with a flag and an escort of infantry and cavairy, but before reaching the outposts he met a arty hav- ing the remains tn charge.
