Exciting News to be Expected at any moment!! —_-_—__ Tonstany’s Station, May 20, (midnight.)— The enemy’s pickets were driven across Bottom’s Bridge yesterday by the troops advancing in that direction. The rebels attempted to regain the post by the use of their artillery, but failed. Our batteries opened, shelling the woods en each side of the bridge. The advance, under Gen. Stoneman, reached New Bridge yesterday, within eight miles of Richmond. They found no enemy in force on this side of the Chickahominy, which at that Point dwindles down to a sma!! creek. ‘The country in that locality is in a good state of cultivation, with no more swamp than 1s to be found on ordinary bottom land. Six pleces of artillery were found posted upon the opposite bank ; but his purpose not being to bring on an engagement, he retired one mile from the bridge, and. encamped. During the day;while driving the enemy’s out- posts, he had one killed and three wounded. The whole army moved this morning, early, With the view of making a lengthy march. What roads they took, it is not necessary to state; but the headquarters of General McClellan to-night are within a short distance of Richmond, in front of which city is supposed to be encamped the main body of the rebel army. FROM FREMONI’S COMMAND. The Repulse at McDowell. The Wheeling Intelligencer, May igh, says: We conversed last eveniag with Lieut. Henry H Picket, of Mansfield, Ohio, who 1s direct from Fremont’s command, and who witnessed the battie at McDoweil on the &th, between Milroy’s and Schenck’s forces and tne enemy under Jack- son. Our forces consisted of nine regiments in all, aix under Milroy and three under Schenck, num- bering not more than seven thonsand men. ‘Those under Milroy were 75ta. 73d, 32d and 25th Ohio, and 2d and 34 Virginia. Those under Schenck were the S2d and 55th Ohio and 5th Vir- ginia. It appears that Milroy’s force had ad- vanced from abies’ in tne direction of Staun- ton as far as McDowell, two regiments ten miles beyond and one sixteeo. Just before noon on the Sth the pickets of thisadvanced ragiment were driven in, and it fell back tothe othertwo. They all fell back in good order to within a mile and a quarter of McDowell, where they made a stand. Skirmishing continued until a quarter to six in the evening, when the main fight began. The enemy were posted along the top of a mountain which terminated abruptly on our left. Milroy’s forces were dis in front of the mountain some distance along, with the batteries on eleva- ted ground intherear. There were tive of these— Capt. Hymen’s, Capt De Beck’s, Capt. Ewing’s, Capt. Jobnson’s, and another not remembered by our informant. Capt. Hymen’s battery in par- ticular did brilliant execution, being about upon a level with the enemy. His shells all burst at the right time and in the right place, each one clearing a space of about thirty feet in the ranks of the rebels. About 7 o’clock in the evening Gen. Schenck’s brigade came up, having left Franklin at half- ten in the morning. The tight raged furi- ously, and lasted till 9 0’clock at night. Shortly after dark, the 32d and $2d Ohio mede a brilliant bayonet charge up the mountain in the face of the enemy’s fire, and drove them from their position, but much to thetr sur; found a heavy force in reserve on the other side of the mountain. They fell back of course. ' Meanwhile, the enemy had come around the j bluff termination of the mountain, and flanked our force. The 25th Ohio was on the extreme left, and the weight of th’ phoned tht ment fell u them. fought gallantly and were considerably cutup. Their ammun - tion gave out, and they stood upon the field ard waited like heroes till a fresh supply ‘was brought them. Upon the discovery tha! enemy were greatly superior in numbers, our force fell back rder about 9 o’clock, having given the rebels at least a Roland for their Oliver. Our loss amounted to 37 kilied and 160 wounded. That of the enemy was believed to be much larger, from the fact that our men firing up bill ‘were more accurate in thelr alm, and on accoun! of the terrible execution of the shells thrown from our batteries.
