Cumiirs at THE SMirusonian.— Last night Wendell Philips lectured before th Washington Lecture Association at the Smith- sonian, upon the text, ‘‘Seize your opportunity.” As an abolitionist, Le said he had no great interest inthe wer. The system of slavery bad received its death blow in the house of Its friends, and be felt as much at ease in looking at the war as an abolitionist, as the audience would experience in looking at Rarey with Cruiser in bis hands The initiatory contest ws commenced ia Kansas, and the South, was recnacting Missouri, and the North is Kansas. In noticing the beginning of John Rrown’s career In Kansas, the lecturer said he deemed Brown's labors of more value to the country than any other chy orm except Wim Lioyd Garrison. Every cannon Halieck bas ever fired, or McTlel- lan ever heard, (for he has never fired one,) is a better anti-slavery lecturer than was ever heard In the Capitol or in Faneuil Hall The first line of the President's recent message ‘wentstraighttohisheart Its purport is: Border States, now Is your time to sell le was not ac- quainted with rail splitting, but understood that a sinall thin wedge was first a This wes a ———- small wedge, but stilia wedge. He looked upon it as the first voice of the Govern- ment, and he was here to persuade the people to belp sustain the President. People had begun to think that President Lincoln thought of noth- ing but the State of Kentucky. The anti-slavery sentiment had at last conquered the Cabinet, and it = duty of the North to stand up and uasist the Administration in the new work The Pres- ident, in his message, had opened the door of emancipation a foot, and he (Mr. Phillips) with a coach and six, and Wm. Lioyd Garrison for a driver, weuld drive right through. The Presi- dent on the thin ice as far as be dares; let us tell him the ice is thick, and goon ‘The Presi- dent could not be expected to do the work—be would say, “‘Goon, old man, 1 am with you.” He (the lecturer) had labored for nineteen ears to take nineteen States out of the Union; at if the Constitution would be interpreted to mean justice, he was willjpg to sustain and guard it. There were two paths out of the ‘wWar—one, of peace, radical, permanent, and rosperous; the otber, of seeming peace. With fhe latter path this dificulty, now an acute attack, would become chronic, and the nation would be incessantly racked with commotion and strife. = He cared very little about the technicalities of the Constitution. Last spring be was wiliing that South Carclina should go, and if in twelve or twenty-four months Maryland, Jelaware, and half of Virginia were not free, and the Capital be compelled to lock a hundred miles to see & slave, it would be better if tt (the Capital) bad been shelled to ashes last July He did not believe there was a secession. It w=s 2 conspiracy to get ion of Washington and rule the whole country; and it was a great mistake of Jeff Davis in being out of Washington last winter. The South came up to the Yptomac without men, munitions, or money, but With an idea; and the North came down with men, munitions, and money, and without an idea. Slavery began the war, and the Government bad the right out of re- bellio.s to smite slavery to the dust. He thanked God for creating Beauregard, if he did, and eve:y Seuth Carolinian that came up to the Potomac, ex they had given the Government the right to de- stroy slavery. He would senda hundred thousand men into South Carolina, and force the Govern- ment into a policy, and when the yellow fever of the South drove out among our men, he wou! garrison the forts with acclimated 1 yroes, under white officers, and hu d them against the world. to the oitizecs the ocuntry. whieh are of :he ‘EW AND om the ir. While it was justly feared by all well Informed persons here that the rebels would not venture to stand and encounter it so far from their necessary base of cperations—Richmond—as Centreville and Manosms, it is well Known to all capable rg reasoning upon military premises, that they must make 2 fghting stand somewhere in the vicinity of thelr present position, or surrender Richmond and all Virginia without fring a gun; which, in turn, must at once end the rebellion, so far as their being afterwards able to make an efficient stand anywhere, is concerned.
