Before the Monitor left he had charged the officers particularly, before they went into attle, to instruct the men not tobe frigh ened incase there should be a very severe shock. He teld them that they need not be i if they should go down upon their knees, and not to be alarmed, that if the shock should stun them and knock them down, they would getupagein unharmed. |Laughter and ap- plause| Some of the men put the question, ** Will the shot go through?” He assured them that all the shot would stay on the outside. It would be no wonder that a man should be shocked if a ball ——e a a r= fifty peunds, moving at the rate 2000 feet per second, should strike within a foot of his head. | Laughter. | THE ADVANTAGE OF THE TURRET. Tn speaking of the advantages of the turret of the Monitor, Captain Ericsson zaid he had proposed to the captain that the sailing master should, —— an ment, attend to the telescope, and keep the turret moving. The telescope was 80 arranged that aman could, by looking bh it, and turning a little while within reach, keep the guns continuall. bearing upon the enemy, while the Monitor is moving round her. This duty was admirably performed by the sailing master in this in- stance, and the guns were thus kept always pointed at this = ate, [laughter,| for such he would call the Merrimac. This novel move- ment must have astonished py Buchanan, wh» found the mouths of the bull-dog pointed at him all the time. [Applause.} NO DANGER OF THE MONITOR BEING SWAMPED. Captain Worden conducted himself in the most masterly manner, but he was not an en- gineer. As a sailor naturally would, he had felt little nervous about going on board a vessel that was so much under water. That was the main objection urged against the ves- sel when he (Capt. Ericsson) went before the naval committee, when it was first proposed to build this vessel. It was urged that such a vessel would not live in a heavy sea. He had guarantied that she would, and here was Mr. Stimers’ report that she was as good a sea boat av heever sailed in. She isso near the water-line that instead of mounting the waves, they break over her. Well, what of it? There is ne place to let the water in, and the vcssel floats (the a champagne bottle with the cork tn. The air is brought down through the tur- ret by means of blowers. The turret is nine feet high, and measures sixty-four feet in cir- eumferepce. The men have stood upon that when there was nothing above water except the turret. It takes 67,000 pounds to bring the vessel down, and that weight could not be ut upon her, from her peculiar construction. here can be no danger from swamping, though the vessel may be under water con- stantly, and the men will have plenty of air. TRE FULL POWERS OF THE MONITOR NOT EX- ERTED. in relation to the point immediately under consideration, ther the Monitor was capa- ble of resisting the Merrimac, he would say that had the guns of the Monitor been pointed 8 little lower she would have sunk the Merri- mac. Mr. Stimers calculated the distance, but he put his gun in such position that when the shot struck the Merrimac they glanced off, instead of wr they would if they hit point-blank. He fifty shots, and some of took effect—several, no doubt, entered the Merrimac. The ricochet shots of the Mon- itor will be nearly parallel with the water- line. He felt quite confident that the next time the Monitor got an opportunity she would sink the Merrimac, and predicted that she would do it the third round. There was another thi They had on the Monitor rae ee geen er i reting his gun. s e ty) ould not be used. ‘The that these should not would be penetrated by them. The next time the Monitor will use the wrought-iron shot, while the Merrimac was either advancing or seo of the Chamber asked how often these guns could be fired. Capt.
