— 2 THEE EVENING STAR. Drilting in Gratv, and Grain Drills. From an article upon this topic in the Wis- cousin Farmer, we § the following The preotice of drill-sowing may Trathfally be c'n'med to be sz old as good English farm- ing. end after x hundred years of ¢: ee under all circumstances, has constantly in fevor, until few or no good farmers feed east now in any country. except in the New West, where, as yet, with too many at least, the object seems more to see how many acres con be ron over, instead of how many can be cultivated. But even bere this loose system is rapidly passing a Probably more new d West, and especially in Wisconsin, last season, then were in the State previously all put to- gether. And during our extensive travels among the best farmers and farming districts Jast season, we scarcely met with a locality wlrere they were not coming repidly into fas or. Most fermers claim that every 50 avres of wheat sowed will annually Pay, for a drill. They talk a: follows :—First, it saves ove hett bushel of seed-wheat to the acre, in- variably, which on 50 acres would be 25 bush- els; which st 80 cen‘s per bushel, (low for seed wheat,) is $20 Next, it saves one-fourth of the labor of putting im, as a team will put in from 15 to 16 scres per day with a good drill as easy as they will 10 to 12 with a drag, besides saving the expense of sowing. Thus 50 acregcan be put in for $5 to $8 less than with a drag, and broadcast. Next, it willadd at least two bushels per acre to the crops, taken ag an average all through the State‘ Thus 100 bushels of wheat at 65 cents, (in the straw.) is $65. Which, add to ——— ling d we have $90—the fall p of the rill that is sold, all bought. paid for, and saved the first season, by any 50 acre wheat farm. (where stumps are Bk too plenty.) Drill-sowing can be done just as well and evenly in windy weatber as when still; a great desideratum, surely, in the West, as it ‘tends to ensble much earlier sowing, as well as much more even and better work. Drill-sowed grain grows much more evenly, for the reason that it is planted at a more even depth. It not only grows more even and ani- form, but it grows larger and heavier, especially vpon up! because deeper planted, ard herce more moist during our usually dry Western summers. Thus, altogether, and for nearly every good and substantial reson thatcan be adduced, drill-sowing is decidedly preferable to the old scattering system of broadcasting. We are aware that some differ with us in opinion upon the entire question; but we are also aware that there *re about the same number whe believe in sickles, cradles and seythes. instead of reapers and mowers; and that wheat turns to chess and horse hairs, &c., de. Yet this Desessary remnant of old fogies do not stop, bat on!y tig the wheels of progress. Covsrerreitixc Coxreperate Notes.—A worrespondent of the Philadelphia Inquirer wr tes: “A few days ago the government detectives found that an ingenious Yankee was printing a large jount of rebel treasury notes, of dif- ferent amounts, mostly, however, of large de- nominations. They arrenged a time and made & descent upon the ‘Yank,’ when he was sur- rounded by all his confederates, papers, éc He seemed surprised at the appearance of the effcers, but quietly went with them He said he was engaged in crippling the rebel treasu- vy, and thought it was very strange he should be molested, as he thought that was their weskest poi How is this?’ asked tonished officer. ‘You see,’ said the ‘ ‘these are bettér than the original article; the originale are worthless; they are unauthorized by law; so I am not counterfeiting. I have = attempted to pass them for money, and ealiy cannot see how I am doing wrong.’ : Ah!’ swid the detective, ‘of course you were Dot going to pass them, brt yon are going to furnish them ts theenemy.’ ‘The Yank’ then ewned up that he was sending them down to flood the Sonth and destroy the confidence of the people. when they suddenly found the whole country flood with s spurious issue, and ‘heir only 6 win investigaiion showed that he had really zen! severa! hundred thousand dollars through the South via Tennessee, and sold them at from thirty to fifty cents on the dollar. The case wre duly pes orted to Secretary Seward, the whole aypsratus seized, and the man allowed to go on bis parole for the present. The Secretary frankly admitted that this is the toughest case he ee met with during the war, snd he forthwith turned it over to the Secretary of r, who has not yet concluded wha’ to do with the esse. Samples of genuine and bogus are here, and it is freely admitted that *¥ank’ hes got up a superior article, whieh is very d‘ ficult te detect.’” nto sppesr before nm .othe Honorable = their reridence, omen: me with reepect A516) than twenty-one nor X youre of age. wed by Government to Candi- 3 Oi the Board, a 3 euc- hoa is & legal Cees, requisite for ap- polutment ts tne Na 6 eolw om that the 2. e de EN every 4 orn!
