Mr. Butler's Church, cor- rer of Bleventh and H streets, to-night. It is understood that the McClellan Body Guards will attend the concert to-night. Free ments, m all da: lent InsvLtine a Lapy.—Yesterday, a soldier of the Ist New Jersey Cavalry, was arrested by patrol- Robert Johnson. for insulting a lady upon the strest, even going so far as to put his arm around her. Berigen resisted the patrolman, striking, kicking and choking him, and finally drew a loaded revolver and presented it at his head. A struggle ensued to obtain possession of the revolver, and the patrolman got it. Berigen then choked and kicked the patrolman, who struck him with the weapon, cutting bis head. Berigen was taken to the guardhouse and had an examination before Justice Thompson. The jus tice decided to commit the prisoner, and was considering whether to commit finally or for a farther bearing, when Lieut. Sheldon, of the Sturgis Rifles, on duty with the provost guard, at the Central station, entered the trial room and tork Ber'gen from the custody of the magistrate, and ordered a corporal tv lock bim up in one oj the military cells. The magistrate protested, and the lieutenant told him if there were any cherces against the soldier to make them {n the military office. Justice Thompson made a memorandum of the occurrence, to be returned to the Commis. sioners of the Metropolitan Police. It was stated at the guardhouse that the sentry had orders, if any soldiers were brought there as prisoners, to take them to the military office, and was told that the order came from headquarters. @zntaat Grarpuouse Caszs—Before Justice Thompson —Sunday—L. Tue Pacts or te Casz.—Editor Star: In the report of the arrest of a soldier by roundsman Reed In your Saturdey’s edition. tt is alleged that the soldier was struck by the officer, which gave offence to a namber of persons, mili! and civil. ‘The implication that the o! acted improperly is unjust; and when the ing fact is made known that the drunken soldier snapped a loaded revolver at one of the ladies, and at a gentleman who came to the rescue of the ladies in'the house, the “ offence’ taken by the dastardly “ civil and ynilitary”” bystanders will appear to be ground- less. The conduct of officer Reed was manly and prompt, and in the struggle to disarm the ruffian he ‘was compelled to use the billy. Thename of the soldier is Thomas Nieland, private in company I, 5th cavairy. K. Por Gaattxo — Yesterday, Sergeant Gittings, with patrolmen Shedd and Noonan, made a descent 0 & house In the northern part of the Third Ward, kept by French Simpson, and arrested the proprietor and fowr negroes, Charles Jacobs, James Ross, John Williams, ard Thomas Tagram, for gembling.
