[From Le Pollet] The articles mostly employed for in-door dress are droguets, reps, and wollen terry vel- vets; silk, satin, moire, terry, and plain vel- vets are patronized for visiting, orfor full dress. Soutache is still the faverite ornament, and is applied to all materials, and for any style of dress. Cloaks, also, are handsomely braided. In fact, this trimming is employed wherever it can be advan ly introdueed. Astracan is still in great favor, but Swansdown has been introd for fall dress, and has a very ele- gant effect. The skirts of dresses are worn very full, and long behind. ht sleeves are very rarely seen. The most fashionable shape for the present month is open, rather short, and emall. The trimming is not ally ag at the edge, but a little belew the elbow. he bodies are made open down the front, but have usually aemall piece of the same material Pratt and Wise. Everybody knows Pratt, the ‘‘Great Ameri- can Traveler,’’ as he calls himself. He is a harmless genius, who appears in our midst to- day, and is off to-morrow, but where he will turn up pba aperp drson C his acquaint- ances as to himself. Something seems to be the matter with his brain, for he acts like one who none. When Wise, who is about ona par with Pratt in some things, was the Governor of ey the “Great American Traveler” on him at Richmond, and after some delay obtained an audience. Tewas about the time that the agitation respecting secession commenced in Virginia, so Wise di not feel very good-natured towards northern men. “Who are you’’’ asked Wise, as the trav- eler stood before him, and surprised enough Wise must have been at his ap; \. “I’m Daniel Pratt, the Great American as the skirt detached from the oo: but | Traveler, and independent candidate for the which can be put under the opening for out-of- | Presidency. He was out of breath and exhausted. Wise had not spoken a word, but sat regarding him in dumb astonishment. ‘Have you coneluded?’’ asked the Gover- nor. “ Yes, I think I have.”’ “Thea get out of this house, you d—d abo- lition humoug. Move, and don’t let me see you in Richmond twenty-four hours from the present time.’’ Pratt left the presence of the Governor, and soon shook the dust of Virginia from his feet. He has never seen Henry since, and, to tell the truth, he don’t waat to, for he swears that Wise is insane; but, for all that, he is proud of the interview, and often boasts of it. arm. Pockets are still worn ornamented, but, instead of being sewn on the outside as for- merly, the opening only is seen. Silk flounces are worn pinked or bound; the former style is more elegant. They are sometimes put on in large plaits, in which case they are hemmed We have seen some silk dresses made with one deep flounce and two small ones placed above; and with an upper skirt to fall and meet the top flounce. Both flounces and skirts are pin- ked. The body of this dress was made open, with open sleeves, and rather short, and both trimmed with a frill pinked at each edge. For ball dress, not is so elegant or dis- tingue in effect as tarlatane skirts, with floun- ces pioked, and headed by bouillonnes, over colored ribbon, or chickoree ruchesofsilk. A colored tarlatane skirt, to match the ribbons or ruchings, is worn under the white one. Qol- ored tarlatans and crapes are worn, but are scarcely so simple or recherche. Lace floun- oes are generally lined with crape or tarlatane, either white or colored, to impart a little s ness tothem. Satin dresses, with lace floun- ces, will be worn for full dress by married la- dies. For elderly ladies we have noticed some velvet di: » opening down the front, over Ke In Prof. Agassia’s interesting paper on “Methods of Study in Natural History,” we find this anecdote of an animal known te almost all country boys: Tes “ Horss-Har.” Detroit has had the kin: —A gentleman from ness to send me one of is gene i cauistgulig eeoloesaeeton trie: those long thread-like worms (Gordius) found med with lace. The un- > je like a little er-skirt was of white satin, with a wide bouil- lome of white crape, cross-barred with narrow gold braid. The body, a la Raphael, opened — white satin, and was ornamented like the skirt. Opera cloaks are still worn in the form of the burnous. Some are made as paletots, but the burnous has the advantage of being removed. They are made of satin, silk, and terry velvet, cachemire, or plush, and are handsomely brai- ded, embroidered, or edged with lace. When made in plush, they are merely edged with a large silk cord, with tassels at each corner. The cachemire opera cloaks are spotted with old or silver. For out-door wear the basquine emiadjustee has many advocates.- The newest model of the season in this shape is made in velvet, not very long, splendidly embroidered in plamettes, and buttoned a la Polonaise. The Pardessus, trimmed with fur, is made in velvet, with large sleeves, and the fur border- ing is very deep. For je toilette, the veleatiy mantle, richly embroidered and trim- med with handsome flounces of lace, is the most elegant thatcan be worn. Some small wae of black sewing silk than anything else. I placed it in a large china basin filled with water, and proescted very gently to disentangle its coils, when I per- ceived that the animal had twisted itself around @ bundle of its ose holding them fast in a close embrace. In the process of unwinding the eggs dropped away and floated to a little distance. Having finally stretched it out to its full hog pcm balf a yard, I sat watching to see if this singular being that looked like a long black thread in the water would give any signs of life. Almost immediately it moved towards the bundle of eggs, and having reached it, began to sew itself through and through the little white mass, passing one end of its body through it, and then returning to make another mare ay it ee the were at lastcom- pletely entangled again ip an intricate net of coils.
