Corporal Merrill, in his letters to the Roches- ter Express. relates the following romantic story I have before stated that some of the private soldiers, from the upper rooms, were employed in the officers’ quarters—a service which they gladly accepted as — superior rations. Among these was Corpo i——n of New York, a young man of wealthy parentage, of attractive manners, intellectual endow- ments—and withal “handsome as Apollo.’’ At the request of some 6f his officers he was occasionally permitted to visit the lower floor, and on one occasion was jitted to leave the prison on parole, for the pu of pur- chasing supplies. While thus passing through one of the main thoroughfares, M——n was accosted by 2 little girl. who presented him with a bouquet, at the same time pointing toa young lady on the opposite sido of the street as the donor. The corporal acknowledged the gift by a polite bow, and proceeded upon his mission. eo lady, apparently fascinated, followed him at a distance to his m, and as he entored it she reciprocated his bow, and leisurely walked away. For some inexplicable cause the Corporal was not : zain permitted to go out, and a negro—I should have mentioned that yuite a number of servants were in prison—was dispatched in his stead. The negro had not proceeded far when he was met by the young lady referred to, and the sequel to the interview was developed in a package with which he returned to the officers’ uarters. and delivered to Corporal M——n t was found to concain a new suit of cloth and upon one garment was pinned a smai card. neatly inscribed with the name of his benefactress— *Ooly this, and nothing more.” Corporal M——n instantly addressed himse!f to the task of epistolary composition, in which he gracefully acknowledged his receipt of the gift, and expressed his heartfelt thanks. This was delivered by the negro on the day follow- ing, and be returned with a package containi &@ number of pocket-handkerchiefs, socks ap shirts! As ina the first instance, the only communi- cation which accompanied the gift was the do- nor’s card. The Corporsl again acknowledged his ob!igations bya polite note, which was duly delivered through the same medium. Thenceforth the Cerporal was in daily receipt of the choicest dainties. and a regular episto- lary correspondence was carried on until the day of bis release, which occurred on the 3d of January. A matrimonial ¢ ment had been made during the interval, with the un- derstanding that the parties would meet in Baltimore on the Ist of March next. I have omitted tostate that the Corporal hed been sent back to his old quarters, but having ascer/ained that bis fair inamorata daily prom- ensded within view of the officers’ quarters, he obtained employment asa cook, and was there- ter pref at his post to reciprocate the loving smiles of his betrothed. She had sent bim her daguerreotype, which he frequently exhibited to me. It was a lovely image, and one that would have required no ** collateral” inducement to carry captive the most frigid and lethargic fanoy. learned that she was of a wealthy family, and of as blood as was to be found among the F . V's, and her letters, I was assured, evinced that she was no less intelligent and refined. When the ae tidi: of our release came, the name of (——n was found in the list. The intelligence was a iaickly conveyed to bis yearning admirer. ‘© saw nothing of her, however, as we marghed through the streets of Richmond, though the Corporal’s longing vision was strained at every animate object. jut when a halt was caterel, a =~ o riage, driven & negro, suddenly mede its appearanee, halted at a short distance from our ranks. A lady descended—there was a brief, bat earnest colloquy among the Confederate officers of our guard, the next moment the enraptured twain (Corporal M—n and his affianced) were face to face. A few words, the first they had ever exch: in person, were exchanged in subdued, yet melting tones; their faces were for a moment lighted, as with a flame—the ment was sacredly renewed—there was a fervent, thrill- ing pressure of their hands, and they sepa- rated. A circumstance is connected with the daguer- reotype above referred to which deserves a passing notice. Before it left the prison the picture was taken from the cese and a small slip of r closely written, and addressed to Gen. ecielian, was deposite therein and the daguerreotype then replaced. It was safely delivered to the Commander-in-Chief, a meet- ing of the Cabinet was called, and the day fol- lowing there wasaleak stopped—a mysterious leak. from high official cire! ind which had imestimably benefitted the Rebels for many months. Flerida. REBEL ACCOUNT OF THE CAPTURE OF CEDAR KEYS. From the Savannah papers we learn that in the Federal deacent upon Cedar Keys, Florida, the enemy succeeded in bern berms prisoners, belonging to the 4th Florida Kegiment. Two companies of Florida troops stationed in the vicinity immediately went down to attaek the cnewy and prevent their further advance. The latest advices from Cedar Keys informs us that on Gog neces last, about 10 o’olock in the forenoon, a vessel of the federal fleet camo in sight, and anehored off the harbor. About that time the schooner Stag, which was ready for sea, commenced weighing anchor. As soon as the Yankees discove; jis, they fired three shots at ber, all of which fell short. The owner ef the Stag then ran her ashore and set her on fire, the crew sohieg Sue escape. The Yankees, perceiving their situation, sent out from the vessel three boats, who captured the flat and put the men in irons. The men in the flat, some fifteen in number, hi arms, no resistance was made. The Yankees then went tothe schooner Ann Smith, | ‘ing at the wharf, captured the captain cob oe tempted to tow the schooner out, but finding they could not succeed they burnt her.
