Dr. Pierson deliv- ered the first lecture of the Smithsonian course at the Institute; subject, “Jefferson at Monticello.” Previous to the lecture, Prof. Henry made a few remarks, disclaiming on the pert of the Smith- sonian Institution or its officers responsibility for lectures of a political or partizan nature not under their control. The lecturer introduced an Interesting narrative of Capt Baton, whs had served many years at Monticell: Mr. Jefferson’s overseer, and which Baton related to Mr. Pierson in Kentucky, where Mr. Baton now resides The lecture trented almest exclusively upon the domestic and every- day life of the statesman, describing his farm, servants, stock, manufactories, &c. No Quarters ‘were near the mansion, and the grou: were laid out witb great care and planted with shrubbery and flowers of the rarest and most beautifal varieties. His garden was upon the side of the mountain where it bad been necessary to blast ont tbe solid rock and make soil upon theterrdces. Mr. Jefferson used to send home great quantities of shrubbery while in Washington, most of which was ob- tained from a Mr. Main, near Georgeto' so much attention wes paid to home matters by the statesman In the midst of political life at the seat of goverament, that in his létters be weuld direct his overseer where to set the trees and plants, and enumerate such as were dead and to be removed; proving, as bad been before affirmed, that be knew the name and locality of every plant and tree about the mansion. There was about ten thousand acres in the plantation, but it was not very profitable. r. Jefferson was SS fond of fine horses and stock— importing considerable of the latter for his use. mil! wo; and U jo afterwards did king, The President's iH at that time was surrounded by a bigh ‘wall with iron gates, from which the street Jed directly to the Capitol. It believed thatibere ‘was no post office bere then, as all Mr. Jefferson’s letters from thiscity bear the post mark of George- town. His library was sold to Government, and ‘was very large, requiring sixteen teams, each carrying three thousand pounds, to remove it from isotonic to hereon mary — Jefferson ra con’ upon subj of religion, but ied number of semaioun waren aerioa very of reading the Bible, which he always kept in a convenient place near his favorite seat in the library. Interest descriptions of his horses, carriages, and daily habits, were given by the lecturer, who concluded his discourse with an eloquent a for the delivery of the resting place of the author of the Declaration of Independence from the shadow of treason and secession.
