THE MISSION OF THE BURNSIDE EX- PEDITION. The Old Point correspondent of the New York Tribune writes to that journal: I presume I shall violate no confidence if I state on common rumor and belief that the expedition will rendezvous at Hatteras inlet, and that Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds will be the immediate field of opera‘ions. Of these operations in detail it is not proper to speak, any further than that it is jerstood that the feroe, when fairly afioat on the waters of Pam- Tico Sound, wilf address itself to Roanoke Island, which is strongly fortified. This isthe es to Albemarle Sound, through Currituck. it is supposed that the position isdefended - from 2,000 to 3.000 men. This taken, one the faults following the taking of Hatteras four or five — ye em one ured men might have done same thing, wi have been retrieved. f ‘the ont of the rebels from all the Sounds will fol- low, which might have been done with a thousand men and twoor three boats at the time referred to. It must not be supposed that this is the whole work laid out for the — It will be but clearing away the u brush, and it will be time enough to record the rest when it takes place. It is understood that the 9th New York regi- ment, Col. Hawkins, now at Hatteras, will ac- company the expedition, and possibly the 48th Pennsylvania, also there. Some delay of the expedition at Hatteras is more than probable, in consequence of seve of the steamers drawing too much water. depth of wateron the bulkhead is less than ight feet; whereas some of the steamers draw nine and ten. I understand that, inconceiv- able as it may Sppest, the getters-up of the expedition have mn under the impression that the depth of water on the bulkhead was nine feet. Everybody but those who ought to have known, knew better. This blunder was discovered at once, as the steamers began to arrive, by all who had any knowledge of the destination. Still, though the expedition may be somewhat shorn, its efficiency will not be materially lessened, as the boats that will be unable to enter the Sound. if that should turn out to be the case with any of them, will be transports principally. Probably a more heterogeneous congrega- tion of water craft was never collected on any waters iy one time. I trust that in our future naval lists not many of them will be saffered to figure, though without doubt, as a whole, they are well suited for the work for which they are to be employed. All the odd specimens from the Kennebec to the Chesa- — appear to have been procured, the one rom the first-named locality being a stern- wheel craft drawing 10+ feet. Since she made = whele distance from the Kennebec to the apes, regular sea voyaging, in remarkabl. guick time, and reid Sent, she is not o spoken of lightly, even if she does look so much like a wheelbarrow The ferry boats Whitehall and Hoboken, now heavily armed gunboats, went out on Friday and returned the next day, thoroughly dis- abled. The expedition will not have their services. The other boats of the samo descrip- tion that sailed last night have not beeu heard from. They probably will go through. It will be the middle of the week efore the s@epedition will begin its work. This will be the very best, and there is a possibility of ex- panccrerf delays that will protract the term “expectation. 4th regiment of whole army is n enemy’s pickets, under command his outposts m we engag ositions This morning dead on the fleld night All continues The Bowling yille Courier say the Provisional infant Enstis, is lost stz days coal on hurricanes ensui her commander, weighed over and tbe remain is a list of her tenant, K. itis just ~—f ~~. ee -—____ ‘GZ Peeding Carrets to Herses. : vegetable is excellent for horses when ith oats.
