Since the introduction of Potomac water into our city, we have had te record many instances of the —— of valuable property from des- truction by fire thi h its agency, and we now add another to the list. Yesterday afternoon, while the cotton factory at this place was in full Operation, fire irom the ‘picker’? was commun!- cated to some loose cotton, and In a few moments the room was enveloped in flames. The *-pick- ing room” fortunately happened to be not in the main building, but in the wing built over the water wheel. The only communication between that and the second floor of the main sage was a single door in a substantial brick wal When the fire broke out this door was imme- diately closed by some one, but the operatives— male and female—seemed with few exceptions to be panic-stricken, and thought of nothing but escape from the burning building. Although there was no cause to hasten or seek any other than the usual mode of egress, they hurried pell mell down the steps, and many jumped from the windows, but so far as we have heard without ferious injury to any. Mr. Larnan, one of the employees, was a notable exception, having, with good judgment and com- mendable presence of mind, stopped the machin ery and set the pumps to work—with bot little benefit, bowever. Had the aqueduct water been carried into the building as into Ray's mill below, the fire might bave been immediately flooded and extinguisbed. As it was, however, from some awkwardness in fitting the hose to the fire plug at the intersection of Potomac and Water streets, much valuable time was lost, the flames were spreading with alarming rapidity t fears were entertained of the entire destruction of the building and its contents. The workmen in Mr Ray's mill were the first to throw water, (from the pipes in their building.) but in asbort time the Vignant Company, with several sections of hose arrived, and not much time elapsed before water from five pipes was being poured into the burning building, ang the flames pts nes d extinguished. Most of those nt € them- selves creditably, but Mr. King of the Potomac Insurance Company, several members of the Vi- gilant fire company, and Mr. Larnan, already mentioned, were specially noted for their energy and perseverance THis factory belongs to Mr. Wilson, of Balti- more, and his manager here is Mr. Appleby. The loss is not so very great, and is covered by in- surance. We have heretofore spoken of the incalculable benefit to our citizens of the aqueduct water, having now witnessed fires in various sections of Georgetown, experience confirms our cpinion of the excellence of our system of distribution for private and public use, and of its intelligent and efficient supervision by the offi: in charge The fanerul of our late fellow-citizen, Mr. Jas.
