It is a curious circumstance that the most successful contriver of an iron bridge, and that of the very boldest d the celebrated Thomas Paine. He was an ex- ciseman, and drew up a petition for an increase of pay. He studied mathematics and mechan- ics, and became acquainted with Goldsmith and Franklin; the latter persuaded him to go to America, &e. He settled down at Philade - phia to mechanical and philosophical studies and speculations on electricity, minerals, ard the uses of iron. In 1787, when a bridge over the Schuylkill was proposed to be constructed without any river piers, as the stream was apt to be choked with ice in the spring freshete, Paine boldly offered to build iron bridge with a single arch of 400 feet span. The same year we find him at Paris, submitting the plan of his bridge to the Academy of Sciences, whore opinion was decidedly favorable. He sent a copy to Sir Joseph Banks, to be submitted to the Royal Society; and he next proceeded to Rotherham Iron Works, in Yorkshire, to have his bridge cast It was a segment of an arch of 410 feet spa d constructed of framed iron panels, radiating towards the centre in the form of voussoirs. An American named Whiteside advanced him money on the security of bis property in the States; he was unable to complete the castings of the bridge, which were then shipped off to London, and erected on a bowling green at Paddington. There it was visited a large number of persons, and regarded as a great success. Whiteside having become bankrupt, Paine was arrested by his assignees. but was liberated by the assistance of two other Americans, who became bail for him. When returned from France to Amer- ica, he in 1803 presented a memoir to Congress on the construction of iron bridges, with sev- eral models. It does not appear that he suc- ceeded in bee his bridge. In the mean- time, however, the bridge exhibited at Pad- dington produced results; the manufacturers agreed to take it back as part of their debt, and the materials were used in the noble struc- ture over the Wear, at Sunderland, where it was erected in 1796. This bridge was long re- garded as the greatest triumph of art. Its span exceeded that of any existing stone arch, being 236 feet, with a rise of 34 feet, the springing commencing 95 feet above the bed of the river, allowing vessels of 300 tons bur- den to sail underneath without striking their masts. ‘If,’ says Mr. Stephenson, ‘“ we are to consider Paine as its author, his daring in engineering certainly does full justice to the fervor of his political career; for, successful as thé result has undoubtedly proved, want of experience, and co: juent ignorance of the risk, could alone have induced s0 bold an ex- periment; and we are rather led to wonder at than to admire a structure which, as regards its proportions, and the small quantity of ma- terial employed in its construction, will proba- bly remain unrivalled.’ ———— +08 The Cause of a Catastrophe. Messrs. Alexander Houston and M. B. Rob- inson, who were reported amongst the lost by the recent blowing up of the steamer Ben Lewis, on the Mississippi river, have arrived at Nashville and published the following: “On the 23d of June we made our exit from Memphis, Tenn., and took passage on the Ben Lewis, quickest of the oe boats, and earried the horns, Capt. Hanson being but re- cently appointed tocommand her. At the time of our departure we had 65 cabin and 20 deck ngers. A short period only elapsed when } nt below, and what was my astonishment find all in the greatest confusion from the escape of steam, caused by an ever-pressure forcing its way through the weak portion of the machinery. This, after great difficulty, was mastered. The night of Saturday she ran on ber usual time with caution, but as soon as daylight shone on us sped through the water at adangerous speed. One hundred miles be- low Cairo we took on two planters with slay they soon became alarmed, and asked the cause of such high — and speed of the boat, when theclerk replied that it was her trial trip, and that she had to this point made ove hour over her time. At every landing the siaves were taken to the stern of the steamers as they would not slacken at such time. Be- tween this point and Hickman the guage-cocks of the four boilers marked a great variance, when they should always be keptequal. At Hickman [ had an opportanity of ec usting the deck hands—36 in number—marching from the storehouse with boxes of apples. At this point a bet was made between the pilot and the en- ineer to make the landing at Columbus in one our and three minutes, a distance of 20 miles, againsc the strong current of the Mississippi; it was lost by one half minute—the quickest run on record at that particular stage of the river. As soon as we touched at Columbus, the engineer of the Chency, in the vicinity of the Ben Lewis, became alarmed at the state of the boat, said she was under a dangerous head of steam, and advised all to leave immediately, as she would blow up. He watched her with agony until she disappeared. From this point to Cairo she was likely to explode at me § mo- ment, as she trembled like an aspen leaf sha- ken by the wind. We were so cognizant of her danger that we took our position on the ex- treme end of the boat, and left her immediately on touching Cairo. A few minutes box" elapsed after her leaving when she colla, with a report that was distinguishable five miles dis- tant.” was no other than —_~+2ee Tae Exoiise Press on tax Prince’s Visit All the London papers are commenting on the Prince of Wales's contemplated visit to the United States.
