OS The London Times on the American Army in General and General Harney in Par- ticular. The London Times of June 27th says : There is no class of her citizens of which America has better reason to be proud than of the officers of her Army Educated, for the most part, in the delightful and romantic sol- itude of West Point, shut out from the world around them by a gigantic chain of mountains on the one side and the circling course of the Hudson on the other, end subjected to a diseip- line which teaches them to command them- selves and others, the officers of the American Army join toa full share of the national in- telligence an amount of mod and gentle- ness which we may be permit to say is not quite so universal among their fellow-country- men as some other more brilliant qualities. In the pursuance of a profession peculiarly ar- duous and ill-remunerated, possessed the knowledge which, according to the Euro system, is subdivided among half a dozen ser- vices, thoroughly understanding the duties of infantry and cavalry officers, excellent artil- lerists and admirable engineers, the officers cf the American Army are among the bravest, the most enduring, and the most accomplished in their profession. in two wars had ample reason to regret their skill and daring; and, while we have often had but too much reason to complain of the treatment we have received from statesmen who have sought to improve their politieal position by pandering to some popular prejudice against this country. we have had every reason to be satisfied with the gentlemanlike and considerate conduct of the officers of the American Army. It has been, however, at last our misfortune to light upon a single exception, in a man who, it is quite evident, will leave nothing un- tried in order to embroil the United States with a nation which feels the heartiest will towards them, and has no other desire than that they should goon increasing year by year, and working out the destiny which a partial fortune has reserved for them, if they will only be content with it. Wecannot trace in the conduct of the American Government, or of its military commanders—always with the exception of Gen Harney—the slightest wish to disturb the good understanding which has hitherto so happily prevailed between Eng- land and the United States on the western side of the American continent. But Gen. Harney chose to seize upon an island which had hither- to remained in our undisputed possession, and the American claim to which we were per- feetly willing to consider and discues in the most amicable manner. He was permitted to land troops upon and to take armed possession of the Island of San Juan, on a pretense which he himself was forced to admit to be utterly groundless, and this at a time when, owing to our overpowering numerical superiority, the officer who offered us this unprovoked insult was entirely at our merey. While he seized by armed violence the subject of contention, we contented ourselves with the simple remon- strance and negotiation, thus giving the most conclusive proof of our determination that if offense did come they should not come through us. The Government of the President met us, it must be allowed, in a conciliatory spirit. It did not. indeed. do what the occasion re- ally demanded—recall and disavow (jen. Har- ney, but it did the next best thing—it sent out Gen. Scott, an officer deservedly looked up to by his fellow countrymen, covered with laurels won in many a well-contested field, and pos- sessing that moderate and concilatory spirit which is 30 often the accompaniment of true bravery. Gen. Scott, feeling, we suppose, from his instructions, some difficulty in abso- lately overruling Gen. Harney’s ill-advised aggression, offered a joint occupation of the islaod of San Juan, an offer, which though at first declined, we were afterward willing to act upon. Atthis moment the northern point of the island of San Juan is occupied by a British and the southern by an American force, with an interval of 15 miles between them; an in- terval, however, not sufficient to prevent the interchange of mutual civilities and good offi- ces. This state of things is intolerable to Gen. Harney, and he is evidently racking his in- vention for some method by which"he may put an end to it 2 He has removed the American officer in com- mand, who, it seems, has ‘English proclivi- ties,’’ and has repleced him by a commander of a very different character, the same gentle- men whom he selected as his instrument when he first seized upon the island, and who, more- over, seems to have been removed from his post by General Scott at the request of the ritish authorities. Thus, having carefully selected his instrument, the General next pro- ceeds to look about for a cause of quarrel. He issues his instructions to his officer, a copy of which he transmits to the English Admiral, and in which he repudiates altogether the pro- position of General Seott for a joint occupa- tion. He asserts that our troops were permit- ted to land on the island, whereas it is noto- rious that the superiority of force was entirely on our side, and declares that inasmuch as the Legislature of Later, np Territory has been so as to include the island still in dispute within the county of Whatcom, any attempt to ignore this sovereignty will be attended with deplorable consequences. These proceedings, we must add, are in direct contradiction to the instructions of the Commander-in-Chief, and the sentiments of the President himself, who wishes that the status of either party should remain unchanged until the question as to the property in the island shall be finally decided. _____.»-+.e-______ Sale of Burten’s Theatrical Wardrebe. New York Post of Tuesday evening says Tie wexniog the'bale of the theatrical ward- robe and property belonging to the late Wm. E. Burton took place at Sabin’s auction roo: corner of Fourth st. and Lafayette Place. The catalogue numbered 136 lots, consisting of dresses, play books, music, wigs, and all sorts P roperties. Prominent on the list Sou wardrobe of Mr. Burton himself, with the costumes worn by him in the famous parts with which he was for so many ide an identi- fied. There was the dress of the immortal Toedles, with the ceat, the colored vest, the black silk tights, the cane and neckcloth and new spruce hat, in which Burton used to as- sume his majestic attitude of conscious superi- ority and exclaim, ‘‘No, ma’am, this is not a damaged article;”’ there was also the old hat— and battered—which was worn by the inebrixted Mr. Toodles, the costume being the same in other respects. The original cravat which bothered poor Toodles so much by poking its ends before his face, deserved and received much attention from visitors. Capt. Cuttle’s make-up, near by, was a collection of curiosities in itself. The coat of the old ap’n,” his yellow vest, his hat, shoes and wig, were curious pace ge but not egual in in- terest to the huge watch, with a dial from the factory of Dreguet of Paris, and the batch of pewter ns on which Cattle laid such store. Of the wher costume the most noticeable feature was the wig of brown hair which Bur- ton used to wearin that part. The complete costumes of Aminadab Sleek, of Tony Lump- kins, of Paul Pry, of Dr. Pangloss, of Caliban, of Sir John Falstaff, of Sir Toby Belch, of Bob Acre, of Dr. Ollapod, of Bottom, of Touchstone, of Capt. Copp, and other characters, brought back to mi the great versatility of r Burton, and reminded the spectators of the uproarious mirth which his mere sppear- snoe in these costumes had created. The costumes of the Two Dromios, made for Burton and Bi am, end for the Siamese T made for same persons, attracted atention. The dress of Bottom was peculiarly interesting, especially as the little parsed of the ass’s head, by which Burton made suc! irresistible jerks of the asinine ears and roll ings of the asinine eyes, and openings of the ssinine mouth, was all exposed toview. By far the handsomest object in the collection was a superb Greek costume in scarlet eloth, ex- quisitely embroidered. This sents dress, it was said, was the property of Byron, who Eben wg Star. The observed parallax of one-fourth of a second ina Lyra carries us four times as far into the bosom of space; though beyond this, as we have no positive measure of nce, it would be as unphilosophical to as- sign limits to creation as to give it an infinite range. In this rapid flight into space we have traversed it but in one dimension, and the line which we have traced is but a unit in the scale of celestial distance.
