Who Smethurst Was, and Why he Peisoned Miss Bankes. [From the London News, August 20th } Another camse celebre hes been concluded. Thomas Smethurst, the surgeon of Richmond, has. after a trial of five days, been condemned ty death. Like the infamous Palmer, the ay ‘ike soner was of the medical profession, and Paler, tuo, the crime with whieh he was Tt was diffieult to imagine & case more atrocious than the mur- but it seems that the crime of “wethurs: is even more daring and more heart- less. Even now that the jary have pronounced ‘heir werdict, it is difficult to believe that any haman being should be @ilty of the charge ; alth e evidence, it is well gh irs naga. to doubt that the verdiet is y charged was secret poison der Couk ough, vfter reading t oughly justified by the facts. ‘The story is full of mystery. This man was vot only man of education, buy he had re- red from bis profession, and was living with is wife in furnished lodgings. His wife was rtainty anold woman, above 70, he baving niarried some thirty years gu; but, av he oself wold the jury after the jadge bad as- suet the black cap, “he bad taken her on an vcursion to Paris and Heidelburg Yast year. i behaved to her with the utmost kinduess, had brought hor back safe to England Aad it umst be admitted that no single word or Sctof uukindness appears to have escaped from him. No account was given of his pre- vious life, excopt that he bad kept a water- cure estublishment in the neighborhood of Farnham. It is singular that a man of inde- pendent means and respectable connections should have been left alone in his.difficulties. Not a single friend came to rt him in the jock, or even to vouch for bis brmer Trespeeta- which confounded those who heard him. Towards the close of last year Mr. and Mrs, Smethurst went to reside at the house of # Miss Smith, at Bayswater. At this same house lived two ladies, Miss Louisa and Miss Isabella Bankes. Their connexions were respectable. and their pecuniary mexns. amounting to some- thing about £200 a year each, rendered them independent. Neither of them were young; Miss Isabella had reached the age of 43, and did not enjoy the best ofhealth. Although she wus somewhat beyond the age of passion, she seems to have conceived a liking for Dr smethurst, and in fact their eonduct so scan- ed Miss Smith that she insisted upon their leaving the house. It is not quite clear whether Miss Bankes Sm jurst Was & married man, knew that t having lived>in the same house with him and his wife itis difficult to understand her ignorance of the fact. The probability is that Smethurst had persuaded Miss B. that the old lady above seventy was not his real wife, and this conjecture is confirmed by the fact that the marriage ceremony between Smetharst and Miss Bankes was performed at Battersea church at the beginning of last De- cember However that might be. they left Miss Smith's, and, after staying a short time at a Mrs. Grabowski’s, by finally took up their rs. Wheatley, at Alma Villas, Richmond, for which they paid lis. a abode at the house of week According to Smethurst, he had tled the — with his legitimate wyfe. and she agreed to accept a certain % for her lodgings. and to ask no questions ag, to where or how helived. Smethurst and Miss Bunkes lived on at Mrs. Wheatley’s until the end of Inst March, when the lady became very ill. For some time previously she had * suffered from sickness and diarrhea, but the disease was now serious; moreover it appeared that the lady had become pregnant. In fact, it was necessary to call in a doctor, and after some deliberation it was decided to summon Dr. Julius, the leading practitioner in Richmond. Lil as the poor woman was, Smeth- urst bimself was the only attendant. A nurse had been suggested by the landlady, but Smeth- urst objected, saying that he was too though at the vtry time he had a bette of sume £290 at the k. On this affeetionate quasi-busband, therefore, devolved all the dis- agreeable duties of the siek-room. The food was mixed and administered by his own hand, the chamber utensils were placed outside the bedroom door by his own hand. Daring the day no human being entered that rvom but Smethurst; during the night no bu- mau being sat by the bedside but Smethurst. The complaint under which the poor woman suffered required, above all things, cleanliness and pure air; and this Smethurst as a medical man must haye well known, and yet, during the many weeks of illne-s, “the bedroom was never thoroughly cleaned out," though, in- deed, the bed was made by the landlady every day. It was surely a strange fancy for « man with more than £200 at his broker's to insist upen acting the nurse toa sick woman, and performing all the most tender and disgusting je pounds. It was om the 5th of April that Dr. Julius the ng learnt the tom#of the case from hier he praserinad acre taiu remedies. They gave no relief. The neither stop the vomiting nor the diarrhes. From the 5th to the 18th he went on trying all sorts of prescriptions, but without the slightest effect. At length, vompletely puzzled, he handed over the patient to his partner. Dr first saw the poor lad: wife of Smethurst. shy oat Bird His remedies equally failed. The disease relaxed uot for a moment. Cases were ransucked by various witnesses from the aanals of medicine, but amidst all the anomalies of disease they searched in vain forease in which ao siugle symptom was abated a jot. Atlength Dr. Julius came to the eonelusion that some drug wns being administered 40 counteract the effect of the medicines. Now. that drug was, in his opinion. sume irritant peison. And upon cow- after vainly attempting paring notes it was found that both agreed True, neither Dr. Julius nor Dr f manded. and ¢ irritant poison. In sort. if those experienced medical men Were to be believed, this man, alone in that ve, XIV. wretched room Alma-Villas was daily and hourly with his own hands administering to the lips of the lonely woman, whose character he had destroyed, scientific doses of that subtle poison, which was stealthily sapping her th and drying up the sources of life—and |- all this under the véry eyes of three medical men, ove of them at least of the highest repu- But the end was drawing near had the sister of poor Isabella She came to see her sister about the 19th of April. But the same day on which Smethurst wrote to Miss Bankes to say that her sister was too weak to sce her, he called on an attorney for the purpose of getting a will prepar-d by which jankes was to leave him_all her rity.
