Jensen, and the office or count- ing room of Gideon & Co., on Ninth, near D street, were entered by burglars. The thieves first entered the office of the Messrs. Gideon by lifting a grating over the celia: window, from thence to the office by a trap door in the floor, Here they inspected the desk and drawer, but got nothing more than afew dollars in change. The thieves next cut a hole through the wall jato Mr. Jensen’s jewelry store. Here they went to work systematically, selecting the best and leaving the least valuable of the watches, jewelry. ; in fact, taking everything of con- vaine. This morning, when the rob- bery was discovered, officers were posted at the doors, and upon inquiry we learned that all the trace that they had obtained of the thieves was the tools they had used, a chisel, brace and bit, a shoe knife, a file, and a bottle of whisky left ai the entrance. The fellows were evidently determined not to encumber themselves needlessly, as in ransack- ing the drawers of the Messrs Gideon they re- jeeted all the copper money, and did not remove the silver ware from the jewelry store. The: A however, swept away all the Portable articles of Yalue, including some dozen or more gold watches of customers on Tepair Some sus- picious fellows were noticed in the neighbor- hood yesterday, and they were evidently posting themselves in regard to the premises to be en- tered They evidently knew perfectly where to pat their hands on what they wanted. At the premises of Messrs. Gideon they prved open the only drawer in the establishment in which money ix kept, leaving other drawers and desks and the iron safe quite untouched. The hole cut throuvh the wall by which the burglars passed from Gideon's office into Jensen’s is about a foot square, or the space between the studding. The thievesevidently emerged from the jewel y store by the street door, which they unboited Mr. Jensen estimates his loss at about $2,000, or $1,600 in watches and jewelry, and +300 or $10 in custom work. Fortunately he retained in bis own pocket one chronometer valued at #400, the property of Mr. Dowling, of this city, tnd a watch of $200 value belonging to Mr. McPherson, Seventh street. Mr. J. isan indus- trieus young man, just commencing business, and he will meet the sympathy of the public in his heavy loss This is the third and most successful attempt at robbery made withina week, in the very heart of the city, neat to the avenue, and within hail. ing distance of the guard-house, where more or less of the police force are supposed to be con- stantly passing Tue Cnorr Untox.—Attention is called tothe advertisement of the ‘Choir Union” of thiscity, who have, for the past two months or more, been engaged in rehearsing Prof. Root’s Operatic Cantata of the Haymakers, and now ropose to | saprrae it before the public at the Smithsonian mstitution for the benefit of the Youog Men’s Christian Association. The «Choir Union,”’ as our readers well know, is composed of the best amateur musical talent of the Protestant Choirs of Washbiagton, who are associated together for the purpose of advancing the Divine Art in the Federai City, and they bave consented to come forward to the assistance of the Young Men’s Christian Association, with a generous purpose to free them from heavy liabilities incurred in fitting up their new rooms at Pa:kers’ Hall, and relying upoa the public to sustain them in an undertaking so laudable in all respects. The recollection of the seeapteaie they bave enjoyed in times past in listening to the excellent perform- ances of this Association, will doubtless be suf- ficient inducement to the Public to attend the performance to-night at the Smithsonian Insti- tution, and they will also bave an additional pleasure in attending on this occasion when it is remembered that, by so doing, they will render important aid to an Association whose objects are of so vital an Importance to the well being of jety as those of the Young Men’s Christian sociation. Portor.— Before Justice Williams. of the Northern Liberties’ Station.—The magistrate of this station seems determined to extirpate the very common practice of youth and others cf making use of profane and indecent language in the pablic streets within his jurisdiction. Al- most every day some case of cursing in the streets is brought before him for investigation. James Johnson and William Payne were severally ar- rested on the above eharge, and each fined by Justice Williams $5 94. Thomas Russell, for disorderly conduct in the street, was fined $1.58. Plant was brought before the mag is- trate for neglecting to place a lighted lamp over an excavation made by him on Thirteenth street, near Pennsylvania avenue. He was fined & and costs. As our reporter was leaving the magistrate’s office, Mrs. Hartman Froblich came in and stated that her ‘man’? bad just attempted to kill her by placing bis hands bebind her neck and before her throat and choking her ina most barbarous manner. He then threw her down on the floor and stamped on her several times. The magis- trate issued a warrant for Mr. Froblich’s arrest. Ricwetirze Last Nicnt.—We fancy that we could select many a better play for the exercise of Mr. Sallivan’s peculiar talents; bat Richelieu being selected, we can hardly imagine how the character gould have been better represented The combination of the craftiness an decrepi- tude of nervous old age was so perfect in all re- spects, that it was im, ible to recognize a gie feature of Barry Sallivan himself, or realize that anybody but the genuine old cardinal was before us. Even the strained and shattered voice in moments of excitement, was almost uopleas- aatly natural. The minor rts, too, were well performed: Mauprat by Fisher, Barainghen by Dawson, Baradas by Mills, and Louts XII by Grosvenor—and last, but not least, Julie de Mor- temar by Miss Alice Grey, who performed thet beautiful character with a true womanly concep- tion and natural pathos rarely equalled The bill for to-night is the “Gamester 3” Bev- erly by Sullivan, and Mrs. Beverly by Miss Alice Grey ; and tbe ‘‘Loan of a Lover’’—Gertrude by Miss Joxepine Manners, and Peter Spyke by Daw- son. Geonoxtown, Dec. 14 1858 The ordinance passed by one branch of our city councils on Friday night, provides for the ap- Pointment on the first Monday in- January, and annually thereafter. a commissioner of streets, at an annual salary of $100 per annum, whose duty itsball be to superintend the opening and im- provement of all streets, also all repair of streets, and the street scavenger. It also reducen the salary of the Mayor from and after the first Mon- day in March from $1,000 to $600 per annum. This. it will be remembered, was the rate of salary paid tothe Mayor of our town for many years prior to the election of our late Mayor H. Addison, Exq. After his installation into office, Upon B petition numerously signed by our cit zens, the councils increased the salary from $600 to $1,000, and the Mayor consented to discharge the duties of street comminsioner, which service bad previously been performed by other persons. The ordinance passed on Friday night relieves the Mayor again from the performance of thii we should think, the most onerous duty of his office, and upon this fact we presume the reduc- tion of the salary in the future was based The ordinance has yet to go through the Board of Al- dermen.
