WASHINGTON NEWS AND GOSSIP. Tas Hovse Paintisc.—We had barely space at command yesterday to mention the fact that Mr. Steadman, the House Printer, had certainly indited a letter of resignation of his officé or contract, and to state in equally brief langns the facts superinducing that determination on his part, as currently understood. We have now to state further that it was handed to Mr. Cox, of Ohio, who is believed subsequently to have been directed to withhold its delivery to the House; Mr. Steadman hav- ing determined to take longer time for reficc- tion upon the matter before finally electing what course to pursue. In the meanwhile, in addition to the commo- tion over the affair in the lobby, so much euri- osity, feeling, and excitement concerning it is manifested among the members, as to render it certain that it will very shortly be noticed and "EVENING STA — WASHINGTON OITY: 14, 1858. ‘TUESDAY .........-..-- December 14, r +s The Star” is printed om the Pot pate ee im use south of Balti- more, its edition is se large as te require it te be put te press at an early heur, Adver- tisements, therefore, should be sent im by 12 e’cleck, m.; etherwise they may met pear watil the next day. SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Uxzon, speaking of “ The Revenues and Finances,’’ argues that there is no fundamental difference between te President and the Sec- retary of the Treasury on the tariff question— only a difference in detail, whiclihas always, to a greater or less extent, existed in the Demo- eratic party. discussed in open session. The Intelligencer is devoted to Congressional Among the multitude of arrangements al- proceedings and news to-day. ready made by the different lobby interests to secure the House printing in case a change takes place, is one to give it to no other than Mr. John W. Forney, by and through the votes ofthe entire Republican party and as many Democrats—Heaven save the mark '!—as may by hook or by crook, be drawn to his support. The object is to form very much such a coali tion as recently took place in the Indiana Le- gislature. We fear that it will never come to a head—be carried out by actual open voting in the Hall; because the number of gentlemen elected as Democrats who are disposed to go into the arrangement, is too small to admit of the possibility of the success of the plot, to compazs which a dozen shrewd and active lob- byites are now exerting all their energies. Nevertheless, out of it, in case of the resigna- tion of Mr. Steadman takes place, will proba- bly grow the candidacy of Mr. Forney, under the name of some one else—that of some one whose name will be used wholly or in part for Mr. Forney’s benefit. 17 From J. Shillington and from the publisb- ers we have the January number of Godeys always popultr “‘Lady’s Book.” From Shillington we bave also the Holiday Brother Jonathan full of -‘pictures.”” i We received from Brady, the fa- mous photographist of New York and Washing- ton, two large photographs, one of Hon. Henry A. Wise, of Va , and the other of Hon. Alexan- der M_ Stephens, of Georgia. They ere taken in a standing posture, and are good likenesses. [> A liberty pole was raised in New York on Toursday last, which cost nearly $1,200. I's beight from the ground to the top of the Liberty cap is 179 feet, and its entire weight was about eleven tons. It was raised inthe Fifth Ward by contribations of citizens of all parties. [> The Legislature of South Carolina have elected Col. William H. Unfortunately, the printer ‘was not so well posted in musical nomenclature as the editor, and printed it ‘breast-bones,”’ so that the whole display was lost. Tae Discwarce or THe Stone axp Mar- BLN CurreRs engaged on the construction of the extension of the Post Office building, that recently took place, was rendered necessary by the entire exhaustion of the appropriation to that end. Nevertheless, we apprehend that it is within the power of the Secretary of War to authorize the re-employment of all the dis- charged, upon the work, tobe paid for their labor when Congress may appropriate to that end. A large number of them are porsons with families depending upon their employ- ment for their daily bread. They have near- ly all been assembled here by the Government to meet its necessities, and are as respectable and worthy a body of men as are employed on any similar work anywhere. That their ser- vices will be again absolutely necessary in a few weeks, must be apparent to all; as well as, that if they are now permitted to disperse, to assemble milar force will shortly prove quite expensive to the Government. The cus- tom of allowing such employees to continue to work for the Government under similar cir- cumstances has repeatedly been resorted to, always to the Government’s advantage and the satisfaction of Congress, every member of which, we feel assured, will join us in thank- ing the Secretary of War if he will make some suitable arrangement by which the persons in question will be able to continue to earn their bread, at this inclement season, returning a fall equivalent for it in their labor upon the building. Tue Texas Sexare’s Action IN THE CASE. Hearing many inquiries ecncerning the facts of the action of the Senate of Texas, in the case of Judge Watrous, we republish below the reso- lutions of that body (which form a portion of the able speech of Mr. Ward, of N. Y., on the subject, delivered to-day) from a copy of the N. York Courter and Enqutrer, of the 224 Dec.. 1856, which we had filed away, and take occa- sion te say with that journal, that if one hun- dreth part of the allegations of these senatorial resolutions be true, there can be no just solu- tion of the case short of its final determination by the last court of resort—the Senate of the United States—the only proper tribunal for the determinatica of that fact : “With this official indication of what the Peo- ple of Texas think of their District Judge, we cannot but hope, that the House of Representa- New Canapian Coinack —The Hon.
