XII A Bundle of Mysteries—Violent Death—Al- leged Saicide, Murder, &c. [From the Rochester Advertiser, Dec. 7 } As we have before stated, a Mr. Holden was found in August, 1857, nearly dead in a morass, near his residence at Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was a man in moderate circumstances, and had procured an insurance of $20,000 on his life. Before he died he said he was waylaid and shot; but his account of the affair led to the suspicion that he Fad killed himself for the benefit of his family, and the insurance com- pany refused to pay the policy on this ground. @ time ago, however, the matter was com- promised by paying the widow two-thirds of the insurance. Notwithstanding the alleged suicide, two young men, named Robert Fuller and Frank Walker, were cha: with his murder and indicted. When the indictments were first found, it was supposed by many that it was more with the view of influencing the suit brought by Mrs. Holden against the com- panies in which her husband's life was insured than for any Sep sale and after the set- tlement between Mrs. H. and the com panies, it was expected that the charge of murder would be dropped. The trial, however, came on week before last, and was concluded on Friday, the 3d instant, when the jury returned a verdict of cuilty, and the accused were sen- tenced to solitary confinement at hard labor in the State prison for life—the death penalty having been abolished in Michigan. As this case basso many singular features about it, we quote from an Ann Arbor letter to the De- taoit Free Press : THE ACCUSED CONVICTED ON CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDSNCE. The evidence on which the accused were con- vieted was purely circumstantial. Itconsisted of the agreement of the accused with the gen- eral description given by Holden of his mur- derers—one being rather tall, the other a short- er person. After their arrest for the larcenies, « bullet was found in a vest belonging to Walk- et, corresponding with the one taken from Holden's body, and of the same weight pre- cisely. These bullets were peculiar, being cor- tugated. Walker admitted that he b. pre- pared the one found upon him, and also that he had a one other like it, which he said be had shot ata buck. ‘Ihese bullets fit — the bore of the pistol alleged to have een found near tLe scene of the murder some time after, and the pistol is identified as one which Fuller bad new stocked at &@ gun-shop in this city some time before. The readiness with which the accused pretended to account for their whereabouts on the night of the murder, when questioned on the subject, after so long a time elapsed, their attempt to prove an alibi, their failure to do so successfully, with discrepancies between their testimony on this point, and their own prior statements, went strongly against them. Other minor circum- stroces, and some declarations and doggerel postry which were traced to the prisoners— foolish and simple as they were—help to strengthen the chain of circumstances with whieh they were surrounded. YOUTH OF TAE CRIMINALS—THE REWARD. The prisoners are both young—mere boys— Fuller being probably about twenty one, and Walker some years younger, and its seems im- probable that they should have planned and executed so sucvessfully so bold a murder as that for which they have been convieted. The evidence, tov, seems hardly sufficient. and probably bad their characters stood fair in other respects, no jury would have convicted them on it. But they stood confessedly guilty of crimes sufficient to debase the human mind even to the level of murder, and the conclusion to b por from the circumstances was more easy and natural. The jary remained together iu charge of an officer during the whole trial. By this conviction, Mr. Martin, Marshal of the eity, and through whose instrumentality ard that of bis deputies the parties were ar- rested, will claim the reward of $1,000 which was offered for the arrest and conviction of the murderers of Holden—$300 by the county and $599 by the city INTEREST IN THE TKIAL—RELATIVES OF FUL- LER AND WALKER CONVICTED OF OTHER CRIMES The pendency of the trial has been the ab- sorbing topic here since its commencement. The court room has been thronged by citizens, and many from the country bave taken advan- tage of the leisure which the season afforded to be present. The throng this afternoon, awaiting the incoming of the court and the sentence of the prisooers, is quite large, and the excite- ment borders on the intense. Mrs. Faller, mother of Rober’, and James Fuller, a younger son and brother, are among those convicted at the preoent term of court on several indict- ments for burglary and larceny. Those to be sentenced this afternoon are therefore Mrs. Fuller and her two sons, and the boy Walker. The father of Walker is also in jail, under indictment for the same burglaries and larcenies, and Anna, a young woma ughter of Mrs. Fuller. The scene in the jail among these unfortunate wretches, counected by the ties of blood and by their participation in the same crimes against so ciety, can better be imagined than described. Deatn rrom Daeivxixo Vacertas.—Wm R. Harris, a resident of Albany, but stopping temporarily with his brother in Sixth street,in this city, died very suddenly on Saturday morning, under singular circumstances. He bad not been in Spo health while in Troy, but on Saturday said he was much better, and pro- cured at a drug store about two ounces of tinc ture of valerian to aid him in his nervousness He took eleven tea-spoonfuls of thi the effeet of which was to excite jorbid Petite, and caused him to eat immoderately at dinner. Just after eating this meal he went out, rushed to Mr. Chamberiai carriage- where his brother is foreman, and ex- claimed, ‘I am poisoned; give me an emetic.” He was taken home, but expired before reach- ing there. “This exclamation that he had been poisoned, coupled the fact that he had been taking what was supposed to be medicine, caused many to think that, by some mistake, he had been poisoned An examination of the remaining contents of the bottles showed that the medi- cine was valerian, and a post mortem exami- nation of the body was made by experienced physicians. Coroner Burton xeld an inquest in the evening at the Detective Police office, empaneled the following ju G. Myers, E. W. Stoddard, W. Lintern, W. H Robertson, Wm. Truesdell. They returned the following verdict: That Wm. R, Harris came to his death from gangrenous inflamma- tion of the stomach, uced by intemperate habits: and the jury e his death was has- tened by having parta’ of too hearty a meal. The deceased was 31 years of age, and leaves a wife and two children —Troy Whig. A Suarp Hovsexeerer.—I never see the reason why your smart housekeepers must of necessity be Xantippes. I onee had the mis- fortune to be domesticated during the summer months with one of this genus. I should like to have seen the adventurous spider that would have dared to ply hiscunning trade in Mrs. Parriott’s premises. Nobody was allowed to sleep a wink beneath the roof. Even the old rooster crowed an hour earlier than any of his neighbors. ‘Go ahead!’’ was writ- ten on every broomstick in the establishment. She gave her husband his breakfast, button- ed bim up in bis overcoat, and put him out of the door, with his face in the direction of the Store, in less time than I have taken to tell it. Then she snatched up six little Parriots,scrub- bed their faces up and down without regard to feelings or pug noses, till they shone like a row of milkcans. “Clear the track!’’ was her motto washing days She never drew a long breath till the wash tubs were turned bottom upward a ain, and every artiole of wearing apparel sprinkled, folded, ironed, and placed on the backs of their respective owners. It always gave me a stitch in the side to look at her As to her “cleaning days’’ I never had cour- age to witness one. bad to lay under an ap- ple tre: the orchard till she was through. A whole platoon of soldiers wouldn’t have fright- ened me eo much as that virago and her mop. You should bave seen her in her glory on “baking days,’ her sleeves rolled up to her arm-pits and a long check apron swathed round her bolster-like figure; the great oven blazing. glowing and sparkling in a manner very suggestive to alazy sinner like myself. The interminable row of greased pie plates, and pans of PT nd ready ginge: con and pots of pork and beans, in an edifying state of progression; and the immense embryo loaves of brown and wheaten bread. To my innocent inquiry whether she thought the latter would rise, she set her skinny arms akimbo, marched up witbin kissing distance of my face, cocked her head on one side, and asked if “ I thought she looked like a woman to be trifled with by a loaf of bread.’’ The way I settled down into my silppers without a reply, probably convinced her that I was no longer skeptical on tered oe Saturday evening she employed in winding up everything that was unwound in the house —the entry clock included. From that time till Monday morning she devoted herself to her husband and Sabbatical exercise. Ali I have to say is that i to be hoped she carried some of the fervor of her secular employment into those halcyon hours. “A Deap Srcv.’’—Inone of our exchanges we find the following mournful account of the difficulties experienced by an indefatigable salesman in his endeavors to advance the inter- ests of his employers: An enterprising traveli nt from a well known <archauae Tomb Bese Manufactory, lately made a business visit to a small town in an adjoining county. Hearing in the village that a manin a remote part of a township had lost his wife, he thought be would go and see him, and offer him consolation and a grave stone on his usual reasonable terms. He started. The road was a horribly frightful one, but the agent persevered, and finally arrived at the bereaved man’s house. Bereaved man’s hired girl told the agent that the bereaved man was spl tting fence rails ‘-over in the pastur, about two miles.’’ The indetatigable agent hitched his borse and started for the ‘ pastur,”” and falling into all manner of mud-holes, seratching himself with briars and tumbling over decayed logs, the agent at length found the bereaved man. In a subdued voice he asked the man if he had lost his wife. The man said he had. The agent was very sorry of it, and sympathized with the man very deeply in his great affictian; but death, ne said, was an insatiate archer, and shot down all of both high and low degree. In- formed the man that “what was his loss was her gain,’ and would be glad to sell him a grave stone to mark the spot where the beloved one slept—marble or common stone, as he chose, at prices defying competition. The bereaved man said there was ‘-a little difficulty in the way.” “Haven't you lost your w inquired the agent. ‘‘Why, yes, I have. id the man, “but no grave stun ain’t necessary ; for you see the cussed critter ain't dead. She's seooted with another man!” The agent retired. i> During our visit to Lowell we were shown through the Laboratory of our celebrated country man, Dr J.C. Ayer. Scarcely cou'd we have believed what is seen there without proof beyond disputing. They consume a barrel of solid Pills, about 50,000 doses, and 3 barrels of Cherry Pectoral, 120,000 doses, per diem. To what an inconceiva ble amount of human suffering does this point! 170,000 doses a day!! Fifty millions of doses per year!’ ! What acres and thousand of acres of sick beds does this spread before the imagi- nation! And what sympathies and woe! True, not all of this is taken by the very sick, but alas, much of, it is. This Cherry Drop and this Su- fared Pill are to be the companion of pain and anguish and sisking sorrow—the inheritance our mother Eve bequeathed to the whole family of man. Here the infant darling has beeh touched too early by the blight that withers half our race. Itz little lungs are aftected and only watch- ing and waiting shall te which way its breath shallturn. This red drop on its table isthe talis- man on which its life shall hang. There the blossom of the world just bursting into woman- hood isstrickenalso. Disarrointep LanoreRrs.—Abont fifty labor- ers, who recently left Philadelphia to work on the Havana, Cuba, railroads, have returned. They were promised on leaving $1.50 a day, but on their arrival they found that the cost of their Passage out was to be deducted from this sum; also twenty-five cents per day for boarding, and twenty-five cents per day was to be reserved by the company until the conclusion ofthe term (six months) for which they were éngaged ; and the hours for labor were from sunrise to sunset, which, in that country, is a very long period. These conditions were repudiated by most of the men, and nearly ali have returned. {> The ‘Black Swan,’’ is giving concerts in New York.
