The hall, as our readers know, is in the third story of the build- log, and is divided Sato three apartments, one of whica is fitted up asa library, another asa <eneral reading room, and the third and largest One for parposes of meeting, lectures, &c So dease was the audience of ladies and gen- tiemen assembled to participate in the ceremo nies of the occasion, that every seat in the ball wap een and members were compeiled to stan The services begun by the reading and singing ot a hymn commencing— “* Father to Thee our souls we Mitt, On Thee our hope depends.’* Upon the conclusion of which prayer was ad- deased to the throne of Divine Grace by the Rev. Mr. Granbury. Rev. Mr. Cole then read a pore ton of the 3d Chapter of Proverbs, beyinning at the verse, “ My son forget not my law.’ The president of the association then !ntro- duced Rev. Dr. Sunderland to the audience, who St congratulated the asseciation upon the open- of their new and beautifai rooms, and then proceeded to mak some remarks upon their rela- ton to the eburch, the peculiar nature of the work the association is desig ned to accomplish, and the ragement which they are entitled to receive im the Protestantchurekes. Joveph H. Bradley, sen , wax next intredaced, zed addressed the Association upon toe infin: ence which they are designed to carry into the business relations of life. He exborted the mem- bers, in forcibly persuasive terms, to cv-opera- tion ia the work, which ix the Mainspring of a successful and healthy condition of society; and 4s the basis of its organization. H. monstrated the fact that it was tn such Assoc ions, as the vne he was addressing, that wasto be found that h bonor, thatcommon honesty of character, eutwhich no man is §t to succeed in any pursuit ef lif- tHe alluded to the influence which the knowledge that a young man is a rsember of such an Association as this, has upon strangers, when he goes among them. There wax no means of instructing and cultivating the minds of the growing up masses of society, so great and powerful, that presented in the organiza- tien of the You Christian Association ‘There was not in soc man so degraded, but that bis example had its influence upon some ether man Rev Dr Nadal followed, and spoke upon the relations between this association and strangers He began by saying that the depa-tment of their wok upon which he was assigned to address them, involved one of the greatest principles of the Christian religion. Going back to the earl: times, and speaking of God's covenant wit Abrabamt, be said that then religion was designed only for the femily; it was not intended to go ont f the home circle. Afterwards, when tbat cove- was exterded to the Mosafe pried, God only gave a national religion, whose precepts were only designed for them. and outside of which it was net observed; but when Christ eame Into the werld, the di on wall between God"s people and the Gentile was torn down, end then the Gospel was forall mankind. The Rev speaker dwelt upon the duties which the Young Men’s Christian Association had to per- form among strangers, illustrat! Crtr Rattroaps.—In our rambles about town last night, among the subjects of conversation in the various groups we visited, was that whicb, for a considerable time past, bas been under in- vestigation by our monied mén—a railroad along Peansylvamia avenue. Tne general impression *=ppeared to be that snch a road would be speed- ily constructed. the only question Was, who snould be granted the right. Two petitions are going the round of the city, obtaining signers for acharter for oue of two companies to construct and own the road One of these companies, it was said, is composed of citizens, the viber of capitalists from other cities V ithout expressing any opinion as to the mer- its of this of that company, or their right to a charter, we give ttis information to the citizens as we received it; and further state that it was stronuly binted tbat in the event of such an im- provement an effort will be made to vest the ownersnip in the Corporation instead of a private omnoeay Which of these will best suit the views of the citizens remains to be seen The resolution introduced iuto the Common Council by Mr. Mobun, to ask Congress to refuse acbarter to any company to construct a railway in the streets or aveaues of this city without first obtaining the consent of the Corporation and people of Wasbiagton, was explained by that gentleman to be to prevent a loss to the Corpora- tion, which tba'gzentleman said was threatened immediately upouw the construction of such a railway. Vbether there is any reason to fear such a ioss, we are not prepared to show « good Sama i- tion, On s CouxT —At the session of this court on Monday iast, a question relative to the execu- tors appointed by the will of the late Col. Thos H. Bevtou, was finally settled by Judge Purcell It eppesred that all executors named in the will bad renouaced or failed to qualify and give bond when summoned The Judge decided that, not- witbstandivy the renunciation of an executor, he ourt and take the responsibilt- if by lying with the law, at any time before lette ve been granted to an- other person This decision is based upon the statute of Maryland, 17%, which is sow ta force in this District. and which appeared to have been lost bt of by many gentirmen of the bar, as well as citizens Upon this decision, Mont- gomery Blair, E<q , one of the executors, who Fea renounced, came into court, and gave bond in the penalty of $20,000 FP Biair and Jobu C. Farn.—St. Matthew's festival, now in progre at Odd Fellows’ Hall, draws large crowds of vis- itors, nightly. Indeed, after a few moments spent in their midst last night, anda cursory glance at the tables and general management, we do not see how any one who has had a first —— can resist the attraction.
