Galt & Bro. have just removed, was, as all Washington knows, opened to the public on Wednesday morwing, and was crowded with customers and numbers of curiosity seekers to a late hour that night. The arrangement of the sales-room, end the good taste evinced by the proprietors in dis- playing their beautifully wrought wares, de- serve especial notice from atl lovers of order. The sales-room extends from Pennsylvania ave- nue (its main entrance) entirely throuzh the square to C street. Its height. from floor to ceiling, is about thirty feet, and the walls and ceiling are decorated with tasteful fresco. The floor is laid with tiles of a blue and white pat- tern, in the centre at regular intervais, reg- isters are placed for the admission of heated air. ‘The counters extend entirely around the room with the exception of the space left open in front for ingress and egress, and are covered with twenty-one plate glass (single light) silver- motuted shew cases, which are all filled to overflowing with tens ef thousands of splendid and costly articles of jewelry and piate. No possible article is wanting in which to satisfy the desires of the most capricious or fastidious On exch side of the room are large and showy cases, behind which glitter the most exquisitely designed articles of silver ware. The show win- dows are a marvel y one unacquainted wii the gorgeous displays to be seen on a Broadway, or a Washington street; they are composed of single plates of glass, twelve ‘eet high by eight feet broad, fastened im heavy silver-mounted corners. In them are placed articles of useful and oraamenta! design, which may challenge the undivided zdmiration of the most finely strung taste extant. Where there is so much to admire, it were useless to d@istinznish, but some of the fancy wares there exhibited, and designed for wedding and other gifts, and which have the credit of having been manufactured by the cun- ning artizans in the employ of the Proprietors, may take aa honorable position by the side of any specimens of the silversmith’s art which we bave ever examined Aside from the illuminated clock which the proprietors bave Pepa over their front door for the public benefit, they have a large regulator inside, manufactured for them by the celebra‘ed clockmaker, Condliff, of Liverpocl, which is set ina ae Mahogany case of autiqye de- sign, with a solar mercurial pendulum attach- meat, which insures the correct time always In high cases on either side of the entrance, glitter gems of the purest water, so tastefully set #8 to excite unqualifi:d expressions of delight from ail visitors. A great deal of tu- siness has been disposed of; and several cases of magnitude yet remain to be decided. Geo. W. The case of the caveators of the will of the late Thomas Watkins, is now engaging the attention of the Court, and promises to be warmly con- tested. ‘The ammount involved is some $15,000. The discussion will be unusually jateresting, and will be well worth attending. The Grand Jury were discharged on Wednes- day tast, having made forty-nine preseatinents it ts very unusual for the Court to remain in session so long Baxpy Praying —Yesterday, a lad named Clayton was arrested by Officer Gormley and taken before Justice Williams, who imposed a fine upon bim for playing the dangerous game cf bandy in the streets and on the side pavement Kt would seem rather bard, at first giance, that boys, a majo.ity of whom, in the city, are usual- ly confined to the schoo! room the largest part of the day should not be permitted to exercise their cramped limbs in some way; but, on the other band, it is a fact too well established, that when a number of them assemble together for sport, and resort,to this feree gaine, they not only carry their contests to the point of annoyance of people inside their houses, but make it positively dan- Kerous for street passengers to make their wa along the street (brough which the juvenile con testants fight their way. As there is a positive Probibition by the Corporate authorities of this and other equally dangerous games within the city limits, the boys should discontinue their practice rather than render themselves amenable to it; but at the same time, it is acrying shame that some provision has nevet been made in thix city of play grounds for school boys. in other cities, particularly in the North, every school house bas its large and pleasant play ground ou!- side of which, in their boyish games, tue little chaps never have occasion to stray Exercise is @s essential to the student as meat to the laborer, and the boys will play. A Severz Accipent.—We learn this morning, that James M. Wright, a clerk in the Judge Ad vocate’s office, in the War Department, met with avery severe accident about a week ago, from the effects of which he has since been confined to bis bed. He had taken passage on the cars for Bladensburg, and on the train arriving atthe platform of the old landing place be supposed it would stop there, and prepared himself for Jemping off. The train, however, kept on toa new stopping- , and Mr. Wright jumped from it before its speed was sufficiently ielaxed. He was thrown a considerable distance, and fall- ing upon his head, sustained several very dan- gerous bruixes. He is now ia an improving cou ‘ition, but b arrowly escaped with his iife. A Fine Stock.—Mr. J. H. Gibbs, not to be outdone by his neighbors, the W iilards’, has re- cently taken occasion to refit and furnish his admirable Gentlemen's Hair-dressing Saloon, in Willard’s Hotel block. From end to end he bas renovated and filled it with perhaps the finest stock of goods—such as he sells—ever broug bt to Wasbington, and bas, besides, enzayed the ser- vices of more than one new artistin bis line from one of the most celebrated similar extabiish- ments in New York. Always popular with citi- zeus and strangets, his place of business, thus improved, is destined to be overrun with custom this season, of our judgment in such matiers is fallecious. The whole affair was well gotten up and well executed, and those who took part in it bore away with them the hearty thanks of the school and its friends, and, at the same time, the con- sciousness of having drawn into the treasury of the school the means to clothe the naked, and mitigate ihe sufferings of the sick and afflicted, at this inclement season of the year. At the close of the performances, and at the request of the Superintendent, the whole congre- gation arose and sang the L.. He had fired one charge from a double barrel gun, and was reload- ing, with the hammer of the other loaded barrel raised from the nipple. While inthe act of ram- ming down the charge, the jarring produced by the ramrod caused the piece to be discharged. The muzzle was ina direct line with Mr. Grif- fith’s right band, through which tne whole load pessed at the palm, blowing that portion entirely away, and leaving the thumb banging by a shred of flesh. He was immediately attended by his companion, Mr. White, who und a handker- chief around the wrist of the injnred member to check the flow of blood that followed. A vehicle was procured, and Mr. Grimith conveyed to the resideace of a friend inthe city as fast ax pos- sible. He lost considerable blood, however, in the interval, and fainted several times upon the way and after reaching the house. Here he was attended by Prof.N. R. Smith and Drs. Williams and McSherry, the former of whom took off the band at the wrist, and made his situation as com- fortable ax the nature of the wound would admit Mr. Griffith was ona visit to the city of Balti- more Tux Wasuincton Monument.—Mr. Editor: Wouldn’t it be well to erect in the interior of the obelisk of the Washington Monument, a rough plank stairway and a platform on top, witha substantial railing around it to enable visitors to enjoy a view of the surrounding scenery. As the obelisk ix nearly two hundrd feet high, few better views could be obtained than from its summit, and few persons would visit it without contribnting something towards the completion of the monument. During the session of Con- gress, particularly, many persons visit it, even in its present state, without the inducement such aview would afford. The cost would be com- paratively trifling, and the amount contribnted would, it is believed, increase the fund consid- erably. In order to assure those desiring to con- tribute that their contributions will be roperl used, a public request should be made that cack contributor enter in a book, to be kept for the purpose, bis name, the date, and the amonnt of bis contribution; and, if deemed proper, the person receiving the contribution might be re- quired to give bond.
