SPIKIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Union says: ‘The losses of the Democratic party always Tesult from a refusal of its own jidates or its own voters to stand up squarely to the p of the national organization. If we can scan the Sields which bave recently been theheatre of contest at the North, we 1 find, as a general rule, that thexe Democratic candidates met with the heaviest defeats who were the most ready to vield or trim on the great principles and doc- trines professed by the party.”’ The Unron further notices that “the Ver- mont Legislature follows the bidding ef Mr. Seward and the Jribune,”’ and that “‘an inge- nious Senator in her Legislature has conceived the project of making it a criminal offence, punishable by confinement in the State peni- tentiary, for s Southern citizen to travel in that State attended voluntarily by a family servant; or to attempt, under the authority of the Constitution of the United States, to reclaim in that State a slave who has escaped from service at home.”” The Trisune quotes this with approbation, and it will doubtless become a law of Vermont. The Intelligencer publishes and notices the speech of Senator Davis. ee {> A letter from the West Coast of Africa, dated October 12th, says it is very sickly on that Coast. A French war steamer had lost 25 men withintwo weeks. An armed boat from the same steamer had impressed a French sailor from the brig Rockingham, of Salem Tus Evacvariox or Fort Drquesxx —Thurs- day being the Centennial Anniversary of the Evacuation of Fort Duquesne by the Frenct ar- my, and tts occupation by the English, it was celebrated with the greatest enthusiasm at Pitrs- burg, Pa. Business was entirely suspended The Procession which paraded the streets was the most gorgeous and imposing that ever took place there. The Bermuda Gazette of the 9th says: ‘We regret to learn that Commodore Shubrick ‘Will have to proceed on his voyage without fully effecting the repairs required by the Sabine. Mr. Gouldy is also iu a fair way for recovery. One of the wounds upon his head has eatirely healed, but the others are still very sore. The brain protudes to the size ofa walnut, but the attending pbysicians confidently assert that he will finaliy be restored to beaith. The servant girl Murphy is still in the New York Hospital, where every attention ix paid tober. The doctors beiieve she will recover. ‘Tue Arcantic Terxoraru Casie —A provin- cial Scotch paper has a letter from a correspond- eat, seemingly familiar with the operations of Professor Thompson at Valentia Bay, which gives some information respecting the condition of the Atlantic cable. According to this writer the Professor's experiments have conclusively fixed the principal injury at two hundred and eighty miles from the shore; that the cable is there denuded for two inches of its gutta percha insulation, and the copper wire exposed to the action ef the salt water; that the injury is trre- parable, for though it can be covered with oxida- tion by transmitting to it a strong current of Ppos- itive (copper) electricity, the oxide is soluble in ‘Water, and washes cff almost as rapidly as itis formed ; and this very oxidation is at the expense of the copper wire, which is eaten away by it. The only results, according te this writer, are these, the fault can be mended temporarily at the expense of the wire, or the wire can be pre- served and the fault allowed toincrease. He says also that the few words receiyed at Valentiaa little while ago, were but a “continuance of the eaprice and uncertainty which have given so Much annoyance since a few days after the cable was landed;:’ and that at the time of his writing, Uctober 2d, “‘the usual alternating positive and Regative currents are being sent in, so that the conductor must give way soon, either entirely or in part, if only one of the wires corrodes through and fails upon the outer sheathing, communica- tion will be wholly cut off.’ The prospect of the Present cable ever being of any practical use js gloomy indeed. —_———___ Tus TerecrarnicCuarss Matcu—Tuz First Game Draws —The first game of the Tel-- graphic Chess Match was concluded on Wed- nesday evening, the result being a ‘‘drawn game’ On the fifty-seventh move, New York baving checked Philadelphia, the latter re- sponded by moving the King to the King’s sixth square. Or, indeed,— for thus Mr. Douglas states his platform—as to the right of Territorial legislatures to exclude prot pecular to that climate, md that the yi is superior to thet of any Other crop ‘suitable for the same uses. That course was evidently necessary to preserve for it even the slightest semblance conceivable, of Democratic organ- ship. The complete summersault which the Enquirer “threw’’ in thus being the first to kick down the platform of Douglas, as a thing utterly inadmissible, served somewhat to open the eyes of the esger and over-credulous office seekers who were making haste to secure shady places under the capacious coat tail of the Senator from Illinois. Matters are now, however, rapidly taking the turn we predicted long since. The southern statesmen quoted by Douglas and his presses as countenancing his practical abolition ver- sion of the doctrines of the Cincinna‘i platform, are one and all repudiating his heresy, and de- claring that they can hold no man professing it, as being entitled to their political fellowship. Thus, in the recent Jackson, Miss., speech of Senator Davis—delivered as soon as he learned the purpose for, and the manner in which D. had garbled his words during the lat- ter part of his canvass—that gentleman not only emphatically denies that he ever uttered the sentiments Douglas attributed to him, but indignantly declares that Douglas himself, from previous knowledge of his (Senator Davis's) views on the particular question, must have known weil thyt in thus perverting his lan- guage he was misrepresenting him. Thus they intimate that while they might have preferred his election to that of Giddings or Garrison, or Lincoln, it was only asachoice between unsound men; not as the election of a gentleman entitled as a statesman to the confidence of the Democratic party. The exception to which we refer above, we will wager our head, entertains similar sentiments, though we have not yet heard whether he has expressed himself on thesubject. Thus the de- lusion is rapidly being dispelled; and all in Washington at loast—for these facts are already patent to all here—are beginning to compre- hend that Mr. Douglas is really sustained in his most dangerous of all the abolition heresies of the times by not a single southern Demo- cratic member of either House of Congress, and, as a consequence, that the idea that he has even the shadow of a party among the southern De- mocracy is the most arrant humbug of this humbugging era.
