The coal and wood merchants are laying in increased amounts of stock for winter consuming, and will be able to furnish fuel at prices within the means of all, during the coming cold term. Many of the merchants have already purchased beyond the amount of their last year’s purchases, and do not think of winding up their purchases for two months to come Messrs arvey & Co. have peg I gemacrneie 3,090 tons of coal, more than they bad received at this season last year, and contemplate further operations The following list of arrivals (with the amount of their cargoes) from Philadelpbia.within the past few days, will give an idea of the activity of the coal trade among the dealers about the river wharves just now At Harvey’s wharf—schnrs Wm_Jobn, 195 tone; Polly Price, 260 tons; T. W. Pharo, 230 tons; E. Poaro, 176 tons. At Young & Carter's wharf— schooners C. Anderson, 192 tons; Eliza T. Smith, 215 tons; Thomas Page, 190 tons. At Magruder & Stone's wharf—schooners NE Brown, 295 tons; Giassblower, 153 tons; Lewis , 160 tons. Making a total of 2,101 tons. At Riley’s wharf, the oyster trade flourishes beyond any previous year at this stage of the bi- valve season. The punyas arrive daily, with large quantities of oysters, of superior quality, which readily command from 40 to 75 ceats per busbel. This morning the steamer Diamond State ar- rived at this wharf, from Baltimore, with mer- chandise for various dealers The schooners Wm. Guest and Lavinia Jane, of the Mott Bedell line, are unloading ay es to Washington merchants, at Magruder & Stone’s wharf. Tue Tueatre —It is refreshing to witness among us acomedian of the powers and artistic attainments of Mr. W. Davidge, who made last night bis first bow to a Washington audience, and received from the discriminating and intel- oo many present the heartiest recognition of his superior merit. Paul Pry, and Dr. Griffen- hoof in an admirable farce termed * Shockin: Events,” served as his introductory efforts ; aaa were rerdered with a freshness of humor and jud‘ciousness worthy of the brilliant reputation which be bas won from the most critical audi- ences of England and the Union. We regret ex- ceedingly that bis stay is limited to so brief time as four nights. We sbould think the mao- ager would serve bis own interests and much oblige bis patrons, by prolonging, if possible, the engagement of this excellent comedian. To- night, a rare and admirable drama entitled “* Dominique, the Deserter,”? and the farce of “* Petticoat Government,”’ are on the bills, Mr. Davidge appearing in both pieces. On Monday night the splendid American comedy of ‘“ Ex- tremes”’ is to be produced, with Mr. Davidge in the cast of it. Not Rasicxgp —We are informed by Mr. Thornley that he has not resigned the Warden- ship of the District of Columbia Penitentiary, which we yesterday stated as being the prevail- ing impression around us. Of course he knows whether he has resigned or continnes to hold on with the tenacity indica'ed by Jefferson when he remarked that few (on ’em) die and none resign. Bat though be bas not resigned, the signs around us indicate that the President has made up his mind to Sagi out, with reference to ‘he Warden- sbipof the District of Columbia Penitentiary, the Policy he bas carried out with reference to the other lecal offices in his gift. It ts a fact well known to ali that incumbents are enthusiastic believers in the doctrine of rotation in office when appointed, however indignant against it they may be when having heid office for some time there may be a probability that its bull may ore theirox. We bave never been a believer in tas it has been popularly accepted, neverthelese it is our duty to acquaint the public with the peepee of the times; one of which is, that t will not long bence be carried out in this case of the Wardenship of the District Penitentiary. ‘Tue Conremnep —Charles H Barrett, whose span of life draws so nearly to a close, is visited every day by the clergyman who has, since his sentence, been in attendance upon him. or by the Sisters of Charity and the Sisters ef Merey. Within the past four weeks the Holy Sacrament bas been thrice administered te the young man, who seems resigned to bis Spywecking fote, and passes the largest haif of his time in devotional exercises. From dark each day up to twelve or one o’clock in the night, the watchmen, in Passing bis cell, dis- cover him on bis knees in dee each morning he rece and at in/ervals is engay ng proper re_ Igious books. ‘The jailor informs us that be atiil pevaists in bis denial of any further participation n the Billing of Lewis than the throwing of a stone; that be had discharged all the shots from bi istol in frout of a restaurant on Pennsyiva- renue before starting to go on Capitel Hill night of the stooting. This is said with great earnestness of manner. Cavout.—Yesterday, Ofticers Daw, Serrin and Edwards, of the First Ward, made qitite a haul of stolen goods from a house on Seventeenth st., between Hand I streets. Suspicion having at- tached toa young man named Robbins, who was pretty well Known to the ofticers, he was watched and tracked to Georgetown, where he was de- tected in vending wheat sacks toa dealer in meal, named Lee, one of which was identified by ite owner The officers then proceeded to Robbins's residence, where they seized upon a large quan- tity of property, consisting of new wearing ap- Lao silks, thread, carpenters’ tools, sleigh lis, wheat sacks, Kroceries, &e. A portion of these articles having been identified by the own- ers. Justice Drury committed Robbins to jail for further hearing. Ford, and will not, therefore, appear in Baltimore or Washington, as announced : Tue ItaLian Orena—To the Public —Attract- ed by business to New York the first week of this month, | was called upon while in Burton's the- atre, and informed that Mr. Max Maretzek de- s to see me; he being in the accordingly introduced to him. The interview led to an Sppciotmces with his brother Albe: who, he (Max) assured me, was fully authori by him to make engagements for the Havana Op- era Troupe. That appointment led to the fol- lowing agreement : “1 sage ree to play the Havana Opera Troupe in t ‘Woltiaay street theatre, Baltimore, the 16th, 18th and 19th of October; also, uring the same week in the Wash. ington re; and will give toMr. J.T. Ford one-third of every evening’s receipts as compen- sation for loan and furnishing of the theatre, twelve musicians as part of the orchestra, and other things mentioned and enumerated in the agreement. Signed J.T Ford. “New York, Oct.2. ALsert Marerzex.”? The other agreement is precise] similar, ex- cept that it enumerates printing, advertising and ushers. With this I returned to Baltimore, an- nounced the approaching opera season, &c ; Most of the advertisements that appeared were written in New York, and sent by mali. Mr. Ruliman, the agent of the Messrs. Maretzek, came on, and I proceeded to, and did expend quite two hun- dred doliars in advertisin; printing, &c , toen- bance the business. On Wedoestey Jast, I re- ceived a dispatch from Albert Maretzek, inguir- ing the receipts 4 todate. I replied, 3600; that after the political excitement was over it would be much increased. Early yesterday morning | received the following dispatch: “‘Cannot come. Gassier is sick. Signed, Al- bert Maretzek.”” My then, eee es their agent went direct! to New York, and I have teleyraphed over sek! over again, | have received no communication whatever from them up to6 o’clock this evening. Sach are the facts, which I offer to my many kind friends and patrons who have been disap- pointed by the advertisements. 1 deem it due to myself to say that I have no confidence in the statement of Mad me Gassier’s illness. It, unfortunately for the operatic profes- sion, is probably trick so often resorted to as an excuse for the violation of plighted faith, that now such statements are rarely credited. Some other, possibly more advantageous, arrangement has been effected, and the people of Baltimore insulted and outraged, and Iam compelled to endure a loss, directly and indirectly, to the amount of a thousand dollars, as [ was induced reatly to change my arrangements, and am now forced to prepare at a few hours’ notice, other at- tractions for my patrons. Those who hold tickets will please Present them for redemption at Willig’s Music Store, either on Saturday or Monday, between 12 and i o'clock. Very respectfully, Jous T. Forp. The pe oh joist, which sup- Ported the cross beam of the scaffold gave way at the base, and in settling down through the floor- ing caused the cross beam to break, and a con- siderable portion ot the scaffolding to fall, with six men who were standin: upon it at the time. The men were precipitated a distance of tweuty- two feet, upon the iron cross bars and edges of the large purifying pan below. Their names are William Williams, David Mathews, John Hogan, Jesse Davidson, Alex. Nicholson, and Daniel Coffey. The latter three are but sli htt injured, and are walking about to-day. The flag was made to or- der by Gibbs & Co , Baltimore, and is a beaati- ful specimen of our national emblem. The fair donors may rest assured that the flag, while in the hands of the gallant Guards, will never be trailed in the dust; but will be found victoriously poe, berever the foe may attempt to invade oursoil. The fliy will be presented to the com- pany by Miss E. G. Towers, and the occasion will be a very interesting one to all concerned. Runawars —Quite an excitement was raised in the vicinity of the Centre Market, this morn- ing, by the running away of a pair of horses at- tached to a soap wagon. The ra‘tling of the wagon over the pavement frightened a pair of horses aitached to a carriage on the Avenue, near the National Hotel, who gore up the street, aud Tun against another team, which in its turn «! da off as a all the brute creation were engaged in a race. ‘he affair wound up by the smashing of one of the carriages, and the rapid exit of the animals attached to it. They were afterwards recovered.
