Lipscomb, for collection, who is authorized to collect and receipt for those of its bills he may present to our debtors. SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Union addresses itself to the considera- tion of the recent philippie of the Hon. H. 8. Foote, at Memphis, saying: Foster, (R ) “Since 1350, Mr. Foote has had no bowels of | Hancock ... toleration for the faithful leaders of the demo- Washington cratic party; though claiming immaculacy for —, the ml oa who have imitated his own exam- 1,073 ple in a shamefal a He couid not co-op- erate with the party in sup) ing the adminis- tration of Mr. Pierce: but obey the dictates of 2 refined and sensitive conscience, by uniting himself with the Know Nothings. A Democrat from principl, he can see nothing to admire in the conduct of the demo- cratic rty or in the measures of its leaders— every thing to admire in the treachery of rene- gades like himself.”” : “\The Union also devotes an article to Cali- ornia polities. ‘ The Intelligencer devotes four-and-a-half columns to an editorial advocacy of the ‘policy of protection.”’ A i At the Fashion course. New York, yester- day, the horse Nicbolas won the four mile race. ‘The horses Sue and Washington were distanced. (> Much surprise is manifested in New York at the report that the mzgazine of the Austria blew up, as there was no magizine on board. A f-w charges of powder, (not evena dozen) of from tes to fifteen pounds each were Kept for fir- ing signal guns, and some of these were expend- ed on leaving Hamburg. It 1s supposed by some that the spirit room was blown up, but this could hardly be, either, as Mr. Kubnhardt, the agent of the line, says that probably there were no more than a few bottles on board, as the officers, crew, &c., were not drinking people Bradbury's majority, 63. Notwitstanding this palbable result, the o/- Jcial count places Foster 137 ahead ! In the Third District, French (R.) has been declared elected by 56 majority. This has been. effected by the receiving of the vote in the town of Montville, the home of the late Republican Representative, Knowlton, which is glaringly fraudulent. Of this vote the Bangor Unton says: ‘Phe Democracy of Maine may now rest as- surred that they will have two re; ntatives in the next Congress, viz: Johnson from the third district and Bradbury fromthe Sixth. Thesemi- official cqunt at Augusta gives French, Johnson’s Opponent, 56 majority, but such were the irregu- larities and illegalities in the town of Montville atone that no just tribunal could fail to pronounce Col. Jobnson fairly and legally elected. ‘«In the morning when the polls were opened no check list was present and none was until some fifty votes had been deposited in the ballot- box When the result was announced, sixty-five more ballots were declared than there were names marked upon the check list. Now our statutes require two things: first, that a check list be prepared by the selectmen and be deposited with the town clerk before the 2th of August; and, second, that the check list, be kept and used at the polls by the selectmen, and that the name of the voter should be found upon the check lst, aud marked before he deposits his ballots. Nei- ther of these requirements were complied with by the officers at Montville. ‘The vote should, therefore, be clearly rejecied. “<The etforts of the Republicans at Augusta and elsewhere to derive consolation from the twisting and turning of figures for the defeat of Foster in the sixth district, is simply amusing. It is a settled fact that Bradbury is elected to the next Congress, and will have his seat in it.’ Tae Attantic Caste —The following des- patch was received yesterday in New York by Mr. Field: Hativax, Sept.27 —To Cyrus W. Field. Esq , New York —I have arrived here on my way to the Bay of Buli Arm, with instruments and reg- niations to test the Atlantic cable in concert with Valentia. Good and regular currents from Newfoundland ‘were received up to the day I left Valentia, (i2tk instant,) but no words had been received since the 2d inst. Thetesting shows a loss of insula- tion three miles from Valentia, but I hope to work through it. $ - 1 will leave bere as soon as possible. The steamer for St Johns does not start till the 7th of October, but I shall try toget there by a gunboat or otherwise immediately. (Signed) Sewixna Macuines.—Though already the country seems to be full of sewing machines— for they are to be seen at every turn—it is really surprising how few families have come to avail themselves of their assistance in light- ening the labor of their female members. Those in the various trades that not long since re- quired many needles in human hands, have everywhere, where they do extensive business, resorted to the sewing machine; and in so doing, instead of lessening the demand for female labor, have been compelled to employ thousands of women and girls at advanced wages—persons skilled in the use of the sewing machine—without decreasing the number of their employees engaged on hand work. -The explanation of this fact is, that the use of the sewing machine has so cheapened their manu- factures as greatly to increase the demand for them, and has also created, as it were, heavy demands for articles which previous to their introduction were not manufactured outside of the family circle. Thus, until their inven- tion, no one heard of business houses employ- ing hundreds of femaled to make bags, or to manufacture ladies’ skirts, &c., &c. In this way the result of the use of the sewing ma- chine by manufacturers has served to demon- Strate that improvements in machinery benefit the laboring classes, as clearly as the result of the invention of the machinery of cotton mills long sinee demonstrated the same fact, though when first coming into use the operatives (in England) for some years did their best to de- stroy them clandestinely, under the erroneous impression that they would take the bread out of their mouths. We have watched the progress of the sewing machine with earnest attention, because long since impressed with the belief that no other invention of modern time: likely to prove more beneficial to society at large. Jn our own family, one—a Grover & Baker machine that cost $125—is employed, and we can safely say it saves more than one-half the previous labor of making up and repairing the wearing apparel for some thirty persons; an economy of labor of which every housewife will instantly comprehend the importance and value. its management is so simple that after half an hour’s attentive study (of the working of the machine) we were able to instruct those who use it for us in as short time, so as that with far fewer baulks than we anticipatet, they were soon able to use it with as much facility and certainty as though experienced with it for years. It answers all purposes required of it, from stitching ladies’ collars to patching and making the clothes of plantation hands, and making up plantation bags. That is to say, it answers equally well, and most satisfactorily, for fine or coarse work. Its use enables a seam- stress to accomplish at least ten if not twenty times as much work as one can possibly accom- plish when sewing by hand. Such is the result of our own experience with a Grover & Baker sewing machine, and we therefore do not hosi- tate to say to all who necessarily have the sew- ing of a family carried on, that the sooner they prov-de themselves with a sewing machine the better, at any reasonabie cost. The work iz substantial, and much neater and more regular than is usually done by hand. Wilson, Esq., Acting Commissioner of the Geseral Land Office, has just rendered an im- portant decision, coneerning Leavenworth Isl- and, which involves the question of the bound- ary line between the State of Missouri and Kansas Territory. The decision is rendered on application of Weedon Mersham to pre-empt a portion of land lying upon the said Island. Mr. Mersham certifies and. proves that said island is contiguous to the Missouri shore, and only separates therefrom by a slough, in high water, and that the whole channel of the Missouri river flows between the Island and the State of Kansas. In conside: ion, there- fore, that the act of June 7th, 1456, establish- ing the western boundary of the State of Mis- souri extends the jurisdiction of that State to the river; and that the organization of Kansas Territory by the act of May 30th, 1854, is a subsequent transaction, and that the eastern boundary of that Territory, as defined by said act, is made to depend on the western bounda- ry of the State of Missouri, the Commissioner decides that the boundary of the said State ex- tend: to the middle of the proper channel of said river, and, of course, includes the above- numed island. This decision is in accordance with the principle established by the U. States Supreme Court in the case of Hanly's Lessee vs. Anthony et o/., 5th Wheaton’s Reports. ————— {> Bon.
