(Correspondence of the Journal of Commerce.] Eastaampton, L. I., Sept. 1858. We left Montauk in the last hours of a de- licious summer day. As we crossed the plain at Fort Pond we put up the lar, flock of plover that I have ever seen, an: t & shot into them st a long distance, wh added six to the heap already covering the carriage bottom. The noise of their flight was like thunder, searing the cattle that grazed on the lain. = The sun was setting as we passed Stratton’s, and we hastened on hoping to reach } — before dark, but the gloom overtook us before we passed Osborn’s, (the first house,) and by the time we reached the Musquito Territory it was profoundly dark and the savages had it all their own way. The next hour was fearful, but as we emerged from its horrors on the heights near Am: - set, acool breeze revived us, and the first I ight of that village cheered us amazing! ‘‘Do you know that there is a mystery of Am set’’’ demanded Peter, who rode with the driver and smoked furiously in silence all across Napeague. ““No,”’ exclaimed the “de you?” “No,” said Peter, and the smoke increased about his cloudy head. “* What the deuce does Peter mean?” sug- gested the Squire in a low voice. “I mean this, that Jonathan Pierson told me a story once about some Long Island vil- lage, and when I came through Amaganset the other day, [ took it that must be the place. The story fits there, anyhow.” “* Give us the story, and let us fit it then, oh Peter. _Paff—puff—Poter usually pulls hard at the cigar betore he begins, and we judged correct- ly, that he would yield to our entreaties. And at length, little by little, with interruptions to relight his we got the substance of it. Along the road that leads to the beach from the lonesome village of —— (Peter called it -\maganset, and so will maganset need trouble himself to say it didn’t happen there) -lay a fine farm, in old times, owned by Stephen Laton, a well-to-do man, who lived in @ house by the roadside, with a wife and one ebild. Ail this happened a g eat while }, 80 that the story is more easily to be credited The daughter, Bessie Laton, was a beautiful ebild, and grew up to be a very beautiful wo man. mirary to the custom in those days, she was sent away to be educated, and for three years, from her fifteenth to her eighteenth year, she was in New York, at the house of awealthy uncle, who was to leave her all his property, some day. He might have done more for her by looking more closely after her life then, for Bessie was no child even in her childish years, but always had great freedom of will, a strong determina- tion, and more than her share of seif-reliance. With all this she had an abounding pride, which had always stamped her character, an no one who kuew her way failed to see that she had ambition which would rest at nothing short of the highest position in woman’sempire. She loved and was loved by all the village, but she lived an inner life of dreams and hopes and self: promises, which her city life afverward hel to encourage. © one knew what she did in those three years, except that her step grew stately, her air assumed the ces of the accomplished lady, and after all she caine to her home, to her sea shore home, achanged woman. The ayety of her whole character seemed to be jost, and a sore and terrible secret evidently preyed on her mind. In this secret the whole village was inter- ested, old wives wondered what ailed the cbild, and old men shook their heads and said this was what comes of ‘‘eddicating children.” And at laat the secret was halt told, and Bessie’s Baie was the by-word of the town. To her mother alone she said ‘ I am married, bat I cannot tell you any more until he comes himself to take me.”” The shame and agony in which her life now burned away may be imagined but cannot be told. A year passed and he did not come. Alone in the cottage, seldom venturing beyond its walls, she dwelt in seeret, growing every day more pale, yet every day more beautiful. Four winters had dashed their storms on the Atlantic coast, and a fifth was passing. and Bessie was dying as she had prayed to die. It was a wild December night, and there was a wreck on the coast, to which all the villagers bad gone Tbe guns bad been heard boomin; 8, and they said she woul: party unanimously ; all the day pre: 9 ashore on the flood tide, beyond the help of man In the house of Stephen Laton the mother and daughter were seated many @ win- ter night before, by the great fire that blazed up the chimney, silent mostly, yet once in a while lifting their eyes each io the other's countenance. was a strange and start- ling resemblance in the two women, though one was old and rd, and the other young The likeness was doubtiess in expression of woe that looked eyes, as they gazed silently and steadfastly into the flashing fire and listened to the roaring t “* Mother,”’ said . springing to her feet at length, with @ cry of anguish— Mother, pray God to let me die.’ “* Patience, Bessie, my child, patience.”’ “Patience, mother! In the meantime, the bodies of several men were brought into the old kiteh: A them was one richly dressed ani marks of rank and wealth, for those days when travelers wore more of the insignia of position than now.
