M. Brooks, enables the Democrat to give what it states to be an authentic confirmation and true version of the thrilling narrative. This gentleman states substantially as follows : He was to have ascended from the fair grounds at Centralia on Friday, the 17th inst , but find- ing himself unwell, accepted the offer of another wronaut, Mr. Wilson, who volunteered to take his place in the balloon. Mr. Wilson effected @ beautiful ascent, at 5+ p.m., floated westward and then south eastward, rising two and a half aniles, and at about 6! p. m. descended, sixteen amiles south eastward of the starting point. He was caught by a tree about 45 rods from the farm house of Mr. Benjamin Harvey. The spot is some 2; miles from Rome, Jefferson county. Mr. Harvey and bis family, and others, , and disentangled the airship. They pulled the car to the ground and some boys held the ropes as the voyager alighted, and while be was drawn off in conversation with the inquisitive people. The balloon was towed to alan, and Mr. Harvey | ap ging to have some by rising the length of the rope, to be pulled down. Proving too heavy to rise, he — out and put in his three children, a lad of 3 years, girl of 8, and a still older girl, At this rt. Wilson called out to those hold- ing @ ropes to be sure and hold fast. But the 3 children were too heavy, and the eldest was taken out. At this instant, through the unwatchfulness of the persons at the cords, the balloon sud- denly and very swiftly went up! The anchor s ina ‘hay bare it tore it away, while a ery of horror burst from the agonized group. The children ssroamed with ose and the piteous appeal “ Pu/! me down, father!” as it instantly grew fainter and fainter, rendered the parents, aud indeed all preseut, for the time perfectly frantie. It was now past seven o'clock, was becoming dark, and the balloon was soon lost sightof! A period of more in- tense wreteheduess to the parents’ heart, can searcely be imagined. As there was little wind the bailoon had gone almost directly upward, till its disappearance in a southeasterly course. Messengers were dispatched through the region in every direc- tion, and the alarm spread rapidly, creati everywhere the intensest excitement. In al quarters the men and boys rallied in parties to scour the country and search the woods, in the expectation that the victims would somewhere descend and be subject to the perils of drown ing. or else of starving undiscovered. “ t Centralia the intelligence caused an inde- seribable sensation. The iporaine anxiety —al- most a out Mr. Brooks, who as- sured the people that the balloou would proba- bly descend within two or three hours, and within, at most, thirty miles of the point of saan a He also sent to the distracted pa- Tents best assurances possible in the case, ‘intorming them that there would be no = except from a descent in the woods, when the eb might be, with difficulty, found, and from the older child’s first stepping out and ijeaving the younger again to rise. Apart from these perils, in themselves improbable, Mr. Brooks apprehended no danger to the little voyagers. Yet the idea became current that they must encounter a frigid atmosphere which they could not survive. it was about three o'clock on Saturday morn- ing thet Mr. Ignatin Atchison, living on Moore prairic, eight miles fiom Mount Vernon, got up as be says, aud went out upon bis porch to see the “blazing star’’—ihe comet. An immense spectre rising from a tree, about twenty yards distant, rather appalled bia, and be re-entered the house and waked the family. On bis com- maost again a weak and piteous voice called to him from the spectre, *-Come hare and let us down ; we're almost froze!’ Mr. Atchison speedily perceived the astonishing nature of the case, mustered help, cut away several limbs of the tree, aud drew the ear in safety to tbe ground! The little boy was first lifted out, and when placed on his feet instantly ran several yards, and for # moment contemplated the balloon with appareatly intense curiosity. The little girl told their sorrows and adventures with an almost broken heart to these people, who, Strangely indeed, had not heard of the ter. A messenger arrived at Mr. Harvey’s eighteen miles distant, at 2 p. m., with the —an tidings that the children were safe. e will leave it to our reader's to suggest the joy which the intelligence caused. It was late in the afternoon when the little ones arrived and re clasped once more in the embrace of their parents. The happy result was received in Centralis, and anvounced on Sunday morning in tle ebarches amid ecstacies of joy. The children were brought there on Monday, and weleomed with the firing of eannon and a general jabilee, Phot by Portraits of them were taken by Mr. William B. Matthews, artist in Cen- tralia, and a variety of presents were made to the: The girl is named Martha Ann, and her little brother, David Isam. She says that he soon cried himself to sleep, and that she cried till she slept a little, and then awakened ia the tree. Mr. Brook affirms that the balloon must have descended by 11 v'clock of Friday night, and hence had remained in the tree till its discove- ry through the kindness of ** the blazing star’’ and the astronomical wakefulness of Mr. At- chison. Mr. Brooks bas the photographie portraits of the juvenile adventurers, which we Suppose may soon be seen by all the curious at the St. Louis Museum. 3 Tae Reronwers —The Troy Times thus de- lineates the reformers who attempted to over- — evil with good at the late Convention in tiea ‘The platform was in the main occupied by the same hirsute luminaries who shone so bril- liantly at Rutland, with a few new ones and a — Proportion of ladi Hiteheock, the resident, was the founder of a Fourier pha- lanx at the West, which “‘flumaxed”’ and left him some three thousand dollars out of pocket— rather unusual; Wright was once a leading Presbyterian clergyman of Boston, but now is one of the noisiest and most rabid of infidels ; Andrew Jackson Davis was once a shoe-maker at Poughkeepsie, as everybody knows, and tuough they say he was a poor artisan, he would, if bis work was measured by the standard of ac- couplishment, have made more by cudgeling his lapstone than his brains; Helleck, formerly &@ grocery keeper in Utica, has of late years been an itinerating physiologist and spiritaal- ist; Chase, who proclaimed himself a bastard, was a laborer of some kind in Boston, progressed t» the rank of a respectable editor, atid re- lapsed into the conductorship of a one-horse spiritual sheet in State of Ohio; Randolph is a colored man from Syracuse, who presents an anowally by big ey and denouncing abolitionists; Julia Branch, the free lover of the concern, is connected with Ed. We never did, and do not believe Bryant's stander of Autumn, that its days are “the -melancholy days, the saddest of the year.’’ To us they seem the brightest and happiest of the twelvemonth. So like an old epicure of an anaconda that wakes from months of sleep to glut itself on the rabbits near it! And the squirrels chirp and frisk so merrily, with their cheeks as plethoric with nuts and stolen corn as an honest Jack's with “old soldiers.”” What rare sport is to be had with the coons when the Harvest or Hunter's moon play at ‘bo-peep”’ with the sun, raising their broad faces over the eastern horizon, just as the sun draws his below the western. : And the mirth of the husking¢, now by rea- son of husking machines fast becoming memo- ries of the past, or to be found only in rocky New England. How the flames run into all the little crevices of the chimney, and then, frightened at itself, draws back and comes to the hearth again, timid and distrustful of the world outside. And so it coquets and flirts till the flames getting bold and blustering, run up the chimney and en- courage the smoke. And when it does at last get over the tep, one little wavelet after an- other, it leiters for a minute, uncertain and irresolute, and then goes off in such volumes, and rises up so buoyantly, and keeps up such @ race with the flames all the long ni Ilenceforth the fire absorbs Tum’s care and hi mother’s and another is added to his ‘“‘chores,”” viz: to bringin chips and wood. The gress sunsets, the myriad hued foliage, even the bare tranks and stripped branches of the forest are all alive with beauty. And to us it seems a gladsome beauty. There is nothing sombre init. The trees put off their leaves as the soldier who has done his duty doffs his uniform when his work is done, and the vie tory gained. The trees have borne their fruit, they have withstood the spring freshet, the summer drought. Their duty was to grow, and they have done it. They can point to feet of new twigs, and inches of new circumference, and they lay off their garments for the rest of winter. And how the earth takes tp their cast off rments, to make from them a garment for rself.
