Tue Concert Last Nicht —The vocal and jostrumeutal Concert, given by the Cooper Opera Troupe, last nigbt, was in many respects the best ard most satisfactory one that has been given in this city during the past twelve months The programme was made up from the best composi- tions of the most popular authors—such as Au- ber, Rossini, Meyerbeer, Donizetti, Sainton, Ro- mer, Balfe, Russell, and others; and was per- formed throagbout iu a style which deserves the highest encomiums from all trne lovers of the divine art. The best evidence of the excellence of the performance is the fact that all the per- formers were repeatediy and persistently encored during the evening; a though such a procedure did not warrant the courtesy which was extended to so meagre un auditory, yet many of the pieces: were kindly repeated. Mr. Guilmette sang bet- ter than we ever remember to have heard. him before. His pieces were all of a religious, or sentimental character, with the exception of the “Ship ow Fire: yet Mr. G., on being called ont, gave with capital effect that fanny burletta “The five old Irish Gentleman, and brought the hgquse completely down Miss Milner exceeded all her former efforts. aud was thiicee exoed. She sang ‘Comin’ through the rye” capitally, and, on being called back, gave“ Jock 0” Hazelden,”? without accem- —— ina most finished style. Mr.and Mrs. jolman, ina favorite duet, I’ve wandered in dreams,”’ were enthusiastically encored. Frazer sang “The Bay of Biscay” wonderfully well; but the crowning vocal performance of the even, ing was the laughing trio, “ Vadasi via di of SMlartini, by Miss Milner, Mr. Frazer and Mr Gailmette, the rendering of which was inimita- bi nd the laugh went round with such a catch- i ffect that it was only by repeating it that tie audience could be restored to quiet. Mr. Cooper performed several solos on the violin, in a manuer that convinced all present at cnc of his superior meritsas an artist. His style is just the right one; taceful, and modest when before the ublie, he Bandtes bis instrament with a confidence and hervous aifection that thrills Lis whole soul, so that, for the time, he becomes a new being; his mild eye lights up with new-bo n intelligence, and the masie rolix from the instrument with a erixp decision which filix every tibre of bis exist- ence, and who listens ix swept along by the irre- sistible musica’ torrent; no other intiuence can havea piace in bismind; be follows every caprice of the performer, and is for the time an abject slave to his will. The crisp notes fly from the justrumeut, from the bow, trom the performer's fingers, with such force that the anditor instinct- ively dodges, fearful of damage by them; and in the same instant becomes completely charmed by their sweetness. Mr. Cooper is the ouly violinist we bave ever heard who carries the listener be- yond simply feeling the power and beauty of music; but, in listening to his performance, the hearer catches bimself trying to see the scunds themselves. The orchestra, conducted by Mr. Withers. formed several overtu with exceilen taste. Prof. Benkert presided at the piang with great skill. Those who missed the concéA last night, lost the best musical treat of the season. od Tus Excuxsion To Care Henny —The num; bers who will leave this city on the Fourth of July and make a pleasant bolyday trip in honcr of our national independence, will be glad to know that the usual excursion to the Chesapeake Bay bas not been forgotten this year, but thet Captain Mitchell, with his characte i t'c enerzy, hes made arrangements for the accommodaticn of bis guests even more extensive and thoronch than those for former excursions. Danci bathing, fixbing, ke pare amons tbe i oftreds beside the fine fare for which the Potomac steamers are remarkable, !t will doubtless be now, as last year, the trip of the season. Votunrece Ones nization.—The expectation of visits from several military organizations ot the Nerth acd West during this summer, has caused some of onr citizens to look around and consider if owr Metzepelis volunteer organization is in a condition toreceivethem. It was seriously asked by members of the old corps, *-bave we any orgar - ization ’’* To be sure we have several associations, Some of them once in excellent condition, aad ereditable to the city. But for want of proper eucouragement, proper management, proper con- cert, they bave been allowed to languish until they are mere skeletons. Some of the citizens who bave considered this maiter, have determ- ined to begin the formation of a corps of volun- teers entirely independent in its character. Such & corps ax Will be creditable to the city, in all re- spects. Lancesy.—Last night, Richard Thomas end Wm. Rawlings alias Bill Monkey, two colored individuals, well kaown to the police, were taken to the yuard-house, charged with various jarcenies; one of which, the larceny of seta of staye harness from G. M. Putoam, was traced to the party. It leaxed out during the examination that several others were concerned in those acts, and the guards went to work to tind them out und recover the property.
