RY A WESTERN MAN. Every one has beard of the el juent, pa- thetic and bumorons stump orator of Ohio. He Was pronouncedeby Mr. Clay (a most compe- tent suthority) to be the finest stump speaker he had ever heard; and in this opinion [ most heart ily coincide, after having heard Clay, Critionden, Jones of Tennessee, Polk, Benja- aniu, Soule, Randall, Hunt, Tom Marsball, Gen. Lamar, Bates, Douglas, and a host of others. , Well, this great orator ea his love of fun into every department of life. In the private sirele, where Le knew every person, and where he unbosowed himself fully, he was the most slelightfal and genial conversationalist I ever listened to. Ido not know that he now, as age and infirmity are creeping on him, indulges this proclivity to humor so much as be used to do. Butsome twenty years ago he ure] to tell, with great guste, the following story : “In early life—so early that I cannot re- member the removal—my father ‘ pulled up stakes,” and carrying with him the housebolid ods, went from Bourbon county, Kentueky, where L was born, to Ohio. Notwithstanding a rough and-tumble strugele with the world, he bad a bard time to get on, owing to a numer- ous and rapidly increasing family. Well, fam- ily matters had not much improved when I had roached my thirtcenth or fourteenth year. “At this time thore lived im the neighhor- hood a young man by the name of Pickering He bad inherited a well-stocked farm, was goed looking, and made a stron; profession of religion. ‘The latter qualification caused him to find peculiar favor in the eyes of my father, who always was blinded by professions of extra pioty. fhis fellow had a strong hankering after ene of my sisters, who was a very pretty gir!. ‘Ie her he was peculiarly distastefal’ She scomed always excessively annoyed at his pres- ence. Yet he was ever at her side. She dared not diswiss him entirely, for fear of the pater- nal anger. Things went on in this wey fora year or two, and as 1 partook largely of my sister's hatred to him, I resolved ty yet rid of him im some way. [ cast about for a plan for some time, but nothing occurred whieh gave me the slightest hope of being successful. “ at last, returning home jate one summer night from mili, L found the family at their nightly devotions. Passing by the windows of the room in which they were assembled, I saw that Pickerifig was there, ard pretty soon [ discovered that he wa. odding, and dually bis head dropped. Now was my opportunity. I stole slily into the hall. and reaching the hall door, which was slightly ajar, and close by which Pickering was, ‘on bended knee,’ I reached in and, quickly pulling his chair from under him, he roiled heavily, as a sound sleep- er would, upon the floor. ‘Lhe noise alarmed all. The old gentleman stopped in the midst of his almost interminable prayer, and saw the position of Pickering. All the family laughed cutright; even my mother smiled. ~ Pickering endeavored to pick rapidly as ible, but he had touched the old man upon bistenderest point. Itwasevident, from his rubbing his eyes, that be had slept under the old gentleman’s ministraiiuns; and had not my father a reputation far and wide for the fervencyand strength of his ministra- tions, and was not Pickering his professing brother? It was too much. Slowly, yet mo:t dignifiedly, did the old man approach hii. ~ Begone, hypocrite!” he cried, in thunder tones. * Never enter my house again.’ “Pickering was thunderstruck. He felt that he could make no apology which would not add to the insult. He had no suspicion of the ex- terior force which had aided him in his fall. Hie at once found his hat. took up his line of march, and, completely crestfallen, passed by me = I stood grinning in the shadow of the reh. ~ Ata suitable time [ entered, got my supper, was told by a brother, in hurried whispers, what had happened, and then I stole off to bed. af- fecting ignorance and laughing most heartily, as I ensconced myselt in the sheets, at the com- plete success of ny plan. * Next day I cautiously imparted my secret to my interested sister. was in her own room at the time, and she threw herself upon the bed and rolied in azouies and convulsions of laughter. Ske had been ewaneipated for- ever from the attentions of an obnoxivus lover The old gentleman did not hear the real state of the facts for full tweaty years afterwards: but when he did he laughed heartily.”’ ese Ganvasizen Tivseo [nu ox.—One of the most remarkable advancements in the manufacture of iron in recent years has been the introdue- tion of galvanized tinned iron for an almost innumerable variety of purposes. This material i coated with tin, not by the inary lin-ptate process, but by galvanic depo- on. It serves as a substitute for plain iren, for tin-plate, for zinc, and for lead under eer- tain special eireums Itas stronger and more durable for malty purposes than lead and zinc. is better than plain iron where rast is to be avoided, and is superior to lead and zine in Warm climates, inasmuch as it docs netexpind and contract to 'o great adegree. There is this advxutage. also, which is unattainable by the ordinary tin-plate Process, that articles can be tinned after they are made in the proper form of iron, provided they are of small dimension. The plates are real'y a combination of three metals, as, in the first place, a layer of tin is precipitated on the iren plates from 2 solution of ehloride of tin Ly the galvanie process, and then a layer of zine is obtaived by dipping the sheets into molten zine. A Devin Ixcawxate—A wreich named Ar- nold murdered his wife near Jessamine. Ky., last week. under circumstances of horrid bru- tality. She had left him for his cruel treat ment, and instituted a suit fur divorce and alimony against him. XI. ANNIE LAURIE. “Tf you want to hear Annie Laurie sung, come to my house,’’ snid a man to his friend. “We have a love-lorn fellow in the village whe was sadly wrecked by the refusal of agirt whom he had been paying attention to for a year or more. It is seldom be will attempt the song, but when he does, I tell you it draws tears from eyes unused to weeping.” A small selected company had assembled in @ pleasant little parlor, and were gaily chattin, and laughing when a tall Young nen catered: whose peculiar face and vir instantly arrested their attention. He was very pale, with that clear vivid complexion which dark-haired con- sumptives so often have. His locks were as black as jet, and hung profusely upon a square white collar. His eyes were very tarze and Spirited, and his brow such a one as a poet should have. But for a certain wanderin look, a casual observer would have Pronounce him aman of uncommon intellectual powers. The words “poor fellow,’ and “how aad he looks," went the rounds as he came forward, bowed to the company, and took his seat. One or two thoughtless girls laughed as they whis- pered that he was “love cracked,”’ but the rest treated him with respectful deference. It was late in the evening when singing was proposed, and to ask him to sing “Annie Lau- Tie’ was a task of uncommon delicacy. One song after another was sung, and at last thet one was named. At its mention the young man turned deadly pale, but did not Speak ; ho scemed lost ina reverie. “The name of the girl who treated him so badly, was Annie,” said alady, whispering to the new guest, “but, ol! I wisk he would sing it; nobody el:e can do it justice.” “Noone dares sing Annie Laurie before you, Charles,” said an elderly lady; “would it he too much to ask you to fuyor the company with it?"’ she added timidty. He did not reply for a moment—his lips quiv ered a little, and then looking up as if he saw aspirit present, he began. Every sound was hushed—it scemed as if his voice were the voice o: an angel. The tones vibrated tarough nerve aod heart, and made ore shiver wi h the pa- thos of his feelings; never was heard melody ina human voice like that—so plaintive, so soulfull, so tender and earnest! He sat with his bead thrown back, his eyes half closed—the locks of hair glistening against his pale temples. his fine throat swelling with the rich tones, his hands lightly folded before him; and as he sung— ud “twas there that Annie Laarie Gave me her promise trae”— it seemed as if he shook from head to foot with emotion. Many a lip trembled—and there was no jesting, ne laughing; but instead, tears in more than one eye. And on he sang, in wrapt attention, verse— “* Like dew on the gowan lying 1s the fa’ of her fairy feet. And like winds in summer sighing. Her voice is low and sweet— Her voice is low and sweet— And she’s a’ the world to me—"? ile paused before he added— “ And for bonnie Aunie Lanrie, Vd lay me down and die. There was a long, solemn paus: locks seemed to grow blacker—the white tem- ples whiter—almost imperceptibly the head falling back—the eyes were close shut. One glanced at another—all seemed awe-struck— uil the same person whe had urged him tosing, laid her hand gently on his shoulder, saying : ** Charles, Charles!” ‘Then came a hush—a thrill of terror crept through every frame—the poor, tried heart had ee to beat—Chartes, the love-betrayed,was nd on, holding every one till he came to the last ————— Tar West.—Caleb Cushing, in his la'e speech at Boston. paid the following eloquent and striking tribute to the West : “Jealousy of the South! Such would not be my theme, if the demon of sectionalism had so far possessed itself of me. I should not strive to draw the attention of Massachu-etts away from the only real danger ot a sectional nature which threatens, and to fasten her at- tention on an imaginary one. Nor by the comparatively small section of the Union lying between Mason & Dixon's line and the Gulf of Mexico, is the sceptre of the power of this Union to be held hereafter, but by those vast regions of the West, State after State stretch- ing out like star beyond star in the blue depths of the firmament. far away to the shores of the Pacific. What is the power of the old Thir- teen, North and South, compared with that of the mighty West! ‘here is the seat of empire and there is the land of imperial power. Tell ine not of the perils of the slave power, and the encroachment of the South. Mussachu- setts and South Carolina will be together but us clay in the fingers of the potter, when the great West shall stretch forth its arm of power, ag long it will, to command the destiny of Union. Le Aletter from a traveler who is on the road to Utah, narrates the following, as among the sights of theexpedition: ‘If such readers of history as delight to imagine Louis XV in| clad in ‘the leather apron of a locksmith, or Charics V. puzzlin his brains over the ma- chinery of a wate! could only cateh some sof the Utah exp:dition, { am unable to say how great wou!d be their pleasure. I have seen the Governor of the territory waiking gravely up the road toward his tent, carrying a picce of stove fannel under each arm:I have seen the Chief Justice cutting the turf tor a chimney, the Secretary of State splitting wood, and the United States Attorney and Marshal plastering the walls of their hut with mud. Yesterday I saw the United States Commissioner stripped to the buff and riding on horseback, piloting a wagon through a ford across the South Platte, which he had discover- ed by wading; while the other Commissioner, having accomplished the passage, sat upon a sack on the opposite hank, mending a rent in his pantaloons. Thee pictures may convince you that the civil offices, at least, in connexion with the Utuh expedition, are not sinecures.”’ 8 Soh ees ARN Daxceas or Protocrarny.— From Par's comes the following story: Mademoiselie X, a young heiress of Lyons, who is still in acon- vent, was lately afiiunved, by her parents, toa gentleman she had never seen. Familiar only with the handwriting of her lover, she received one day, a nicely-sealed package, containing an ardent love-letter Ge pateba bela ness. Reading first the epistle, with which | she was charined, she unsealed tho well-eavel- oped accompauiment; and, what was ber horrer at finding onty the likeness of a wrinkled old man! Lelieving herself to be the victim of a vilo bargain, like too many of her sexin France, she concealed her agony for some days, till, on a visit to her parents, she at last opened her heart tothem. She showed them the portrait, which they immediately nised ag a vener able uncle of the young ge: man. It was at once explained. The amorous nepbew had en- closed the wrong likeness inhisletter!
