The facts aro these: On several days a well- dressed man was observed to be most constant in his visits to a particular locality in Prince's Park. A house in W. street, occupied by two young ladies, a female servant, and a brother, absent during the greater part of the day, seewed to be the special object of his care and attention. Ordinary passers-by noticed no more than this; bat the inmates had to com- plain of conduct on the part of the “‘gentle- man” not fit fur description in print. By in- decent gesture and behavior he rendered his presence particularly unpleasant. At first the sisters “kept never minding ;"’ they were it- diguant most certainly; but, without a saeri- fice of maidenly modesty, they could hardly have made a formal complaint. At length the blackguardism became too demonstrative to permit of further toleration, and the ladies re- sulved to take the law into their own bands. A medsage was dispatehed to the “ youthful gal laut’? appointing a meeting within the house which he bad so honored with his polite at- tentions; and, nought suspecting, he, with ““wreathed smiles,” approached and entered, treading softly on tiptoe, as if conscious of clandestine admission. Received by the elder of the two ladies, he was asked—* Pray, sir, what do you want?” “What but you, sweet’’ replied he, proceeding to take liber- ties as if with a certainty that they would be acceptable; when a blowon the head trom a life-preserver afforded a striking proof of the return of his affection; the younger sister and the servant were not slow in following up the advantage, and at length well-belabored and with head streaming blood, erying out ‘ mur- der’ lustily, and, mayhap mentally ejaculat- ing— kas it was right todissembie your love, But way did you kick we down stairs ?— be rushed from the hunse which he had en- tered in such anticipatory triumph, an hum bled aud degraded dastard ’ Prorits or Tos. To Saveratus Earers.- Ata late conven- tion of dentists, it was asserted that the main if not the sole cause of the great increase of defective teeth was the uve of saleratus and cream of tartar in the manufacture of bread ; and Dr Baker fully agreed with the facts offered in proof, adding the results of some ex- periments wade by himself. He soaked sound teeth in a solution of saleratus, and they were destroyed in fourteen days. We have the opinion of men whose talents, time and zeal are given to dentistry, that saleratus and ereaw of tartar in bread are « chief cause of ruin to teeth.
