JOHN MINOR tars ey VIRGINIA, EN ROME. Those of our readers who remember the do- ings of Mr. Botts, in Virginia, during the late Presidential campaign, will read with interest the records of bis exploits abroad, as given in the following extract from a private letter. Mr. Botts, it would seem. is as much at home im the Sistine Chapel at Rome as in the Afri- ean Church at Richmond - Roma, December 30, 1857 We have been very much amused with one of our coantrymen, the Hon. J. M. Botts, of Virginia, who has reeently been traveling in italy. He left the United States on the Slat September, bas traveled over all the north of Europe, has been in Sweden, Norway, Den- mark, Kussia, Germany, Austria, France, Prussia and Maly. He left Florence on the 17th of December, went to Naples, ascended Mount Vesuvius, arrived here in Rome the day before Christmas, and left the day after Christmas for France, intending to og three days in “ doing” in Switzerland. is expe- di on the part of a pleasure-seeker and lover of the fine arts is, I think, unparalleled. Naples and Vesuvius alone consume, with the most diligent of ordinary tourists, two weeks at least. Mr. Botts, while here, gave a very funny account of the manner in which he made his way into the Sistine Chapel during the cere- monies of Christmas Eve. His courier had forgotten to tell him be must appear, on that cecasion, if at all, in full dress—gloves, black drese coat and all. In his ignorance, there- fore, he presented himself at the chapel “ ac- coutred as he was,’ with nothing but his ordi- nary habiliments—a great coat over a frock— and the Italian guard, of course, turned him back. His discomfiture, however, was but momentary. He had made up his mind to go in, and no time was to be lost in seeking other apparel. But the invincible Virginian was master of the situation. Three things seemed to be required to be presentable : First, to throw off his overcoat; second, to get s pair of gloves; aud third, to improvise a swallow-tailed coat. The first he did with a reckless prodigality, worthy of the desperate emergency. As for the second, he would have willingly have resorted to the time honored ex- pedient, so often resortcd to in such eases by our countrymen abroad, of converting his frock into a dress coat by pinning up the tists, but as luck would have it, he had no pins, and, to crown his destitution, he had no gloves. Here it was that that invention which is the off- spring. of necessity, came to his aid, and en- a him to overcome both diffieulties at once. Tucking ander the ends of his coat tail, he put his in his pocket, which in this way . Served the double purpose of keeping back his x skirte and concealing the absence of kids. The want of pins thus saved him from the conse- quences of his want of kids. He then boldly marched up the aisle? frustrating the objec- tions of one or two of the more fastidious fears, who still found fault with his costume, y the constant repetition of the only four Italian words with which he was familiar— *\ Non capisco—sono Americano” —**I don't understand ; [ am an American.’’) Therew he was allowed to pasa. Having secu: a — place, he saw at the door Judge B., of omnecticut, who had been put back for the same cause as himself, and he once more sallied out té the reseue of his countrymen. It took bim fifteen minutes to arrange the Judge’scoat and teach him the magic passwords, after which they both entered and enjoyed the services. This is one of Mr. Botts’s stories, and will perhaps, find a place in the book of tray- els, which, it is said, he intends publishing when he arriveg home. He has seen no pictures superior to the works of art in Virginia, and he.tells all the English people he meets that the English language is = en in America in greater purity than in ogland.—V. ¥. Post. Axgcpots or Wanstex.—A correspondent ives us the following uew anecdote of this em- inent statesman _“ Bverybody knows that Mr. Webster wad*a bit of « sportsman, was fond of beach and fish- ing parties, and could make a chowder as well as On one of bis occasional visits to Long nd for fresh air and recreation, ‘Black Dan, as he was familiarly called, took it into his head to go angling in the East Bay, with a party consisting oaly of Mr. L. and myself. “‘ Now the skipper of our little fishing craft was one Paul Seaman, black as coal, a clever, civil darkey, but not wanting, especially on such occasions, in a sufficient sense of his own importance. x “The party had been crossing and re-cross- ing the foaming breakers of the inlet, pulling in the blue fish quite lively. when, during « pause in the sport, Mr. Webster and Mr. L. got into @ conversation about the Shinnecock Indi- ans, @ remnant of whom still dwell in the neigh- borheod. Paul, who was eagerly listening, was evidently bursting with ambition to take a sbi- uing part among such distinguished talkers. He contained himself, however. But when Mr.. Webster remarked that those Indians by this time must re foe deal enlightened, Paul could stand it onger, bat broke in with— * Lightened, Misser Webster! why, dem fel- ler: just as ‘telligentas you andl are!’ Paul, who ig still extant, and one of the institutions of the place, is wont to tell his customers, to this day, how he chopped logic with the great statesman, and rarely tails to insinuate, with becoming modesty, that he thinks he rather floored him.”’—Boston Courier. “Tus Jenxs.”’—The Lilinois Baptist, of January Li, says: “ This strange infatuation is again revived io our immediate vicinity. It quate be ‘ance in @ protracted meeting among the Methodists at Indian Grove. The winister who conduc‘ed the meeting moved them from Indian Grove to Avoca, and brought with them five or six of the jerkers, and thus the contagion commenced in the latter place. Our informant was present at several of their meet- ings in Avoca, and describes the seenes as very exciting From fifty to ahundred were jerking at the same time ‘heir hands shoulders, feet and bead would be violently thrown into the must grotesque and apparently painful shape. ‘The womens bonnets would fly off, their hair become disheveled, and in some instances, snap like awhip. Indiana, a om days uae, by virtue of t! thority of a body of Regulators, was a terrible alfair. Nearly fifteen hundred horsemey as- seubled to witness the execution. The cause of the excitement which resulted in the assem- blage of so formidable a body of citizens, to un- lawiully take the life of a man, is thua given by a correspondent of the Indianapolis Journal: For several years there has been @ regularly Orguuized band of horse thieves, blacklegs, counterfeiters and murderers, whose range ex- tended from Chie: to Toledo. The swamps and oak berrens of Noble and adjacent coun- ties have been their head-quarters and princi- pal hiding places. At last their numbers be- came so great, and their villainous deeds so bold and during, that it was unsafe for a strapger, or any one, who it was supposed had money, to pass along the public Less with any degree of safety. ithin Ue last few manths there have been several highway rub- beries and attempts tocommit murder. At length the better portion of the citizens in No- ble and adjoining counties organized them- selves into a vigilance committee, horse com- panies. dc., to see if they could ferret out some of the leaders. Recently the regulators caught a counter- feiter, who had on hand a heavy assortment of coin He was banged antil he confessed and exposed the gang with which he was con- nected. He was then put in jail and arrests made, some twenty-five persons being taken in custody and lodged in the jails of Noble, La Grange, De Kalb and Elkhart counties. One of the leaders of the scoundrels was taken be- fore the Executive Committee of the Regula- tora and sentenced to die. He had many aliases, but wgs best known by the name of Gregory McDougal. He was twenty-seven years old, a Canadian by birth, and leaves a wife and child. The correspondent of the Journal says : After the verdict of the Regulators, about five hundred horsemen, from this and adjoining counties, formed a procession, and with their prisoner in a wagon in the lead, slowly and solemnly proceeded to the place of execution, & romantic spot about five miles out from Ligo- nier, neara small lake. The sion ar- rived at the selected spot about 3 o'clock, and after some preliminary arrangements, the wagon, containing the prisoner and his coffin, was driven under an oak tree, from a branch of which the fatal — dangled. Theprisoner seemed cool and collected; indeed, he evinced throughout the whole of the terrible scene the utmost saxg froid and self-possession. A “Rev. Mr Wirt’’ made a “feeling prayer,”’ the | aia made a speech, “ little thought he would ever come to this.”’ hoped “ the Lord would have mercy on his soul,” and was strung up and hung until dead. The correspondent we quote says : About fifteen hundred horsemen from all over the country were in town yesterday, and about five hundred went out to the place of execution to-day, and formed a circle around the wagon. Not a word was spoken after the prayer of the minister. All was still and quiet, and after the man was cut down the crowd quietly dis- persed, each one looking as though he wassorry that such a thing had been done. Two wore Men Hone.—A correspondent at Fort Wayne writes to us that the Regulators in Noble sonny hung two more men on Saturday, at Kendalville. e excitement in Noble and adjvining counties continues great. The same Regulators who hung McDougal at Ligonier, an account of which we published yesterday, hung the two men at Kendanville on Satur- day.— Indianapolis Journal, 3d. Tae Law or Waeatser.—There are man: resemblances between the winters of 1837-8 and 1857-8. The month of December, 1837, was open and very mild, with no frost in the earth Christmas was warm, mild and pleasant, the wedther continuing so until the end of the year. Thero was no sleighing, except on the 10th and 11th of Tikoaea ber, and then for a short time only. January, 1538—twenty years ago—was also a most remarkable month, the weather con- tinuing almost like ‘Indian summer,” with the exception of the last two days. No snow was seen during that month, the thermometer in the afternoons averaging 40° only Febru- ary disappointed the prognostications, as it may this winter, for although cold, there was but little snow, and fourteen clear days. March had only two snow stogms. April, as usual, variable, the temperature averaging a few degrees above January. The Hudson opened and closed three times during the sea- son, the last about the 18th, when the streams generally became navigable. This year steam- ers ran to Albany for a few days in the month of January, and up to this time the Sound and other steamboats have met with no interrup- tion from the ice. Judge Butler, of Connecticut, says that the forees which produce and control the varying atmospheric conditions, are themselves subject tochanges. These are periodical, and covering periods of about ten years or a decade. Cer- tain resulte may therefore be expected during every decade, and at certain portions of the decade. These results aumetimes occur with more certainty during the alternate decades. Thus the latter part of the decade between 1830 and 1540 was substantially a reduplica- tion of that from 1810 to 1820; and it was to be expected that the latter part of the present de- cade would substantially resemble that of 1830 to 1840, as it has done. The weather thus far, since 1855, has been substantially like that from 1835 to 1840, and this present 1838.—N. Y. Post. A Spirited Controversy.—A discussion is taking place in Brooklyn, before the Circuit Court, as to whether lager bier is intoxicating or not. The question is raised on the proseeu- tion of a vendor of the above named bevgrage, fur having sold intoxica liquors on Sunday, in violation of the 21st section of the Metro- politan Police Law. The defendant pleads that he has committed no offence, as lager bier is not an intoxicating drink. In proof of this, several Germans of high and low degree have testified as to their experience, and if their eae f serves them truly, it is established beyond all reasonable doubt that lager bier is powerless to intoxicatea German. Among the witnesses examined, there was one who stated that he drank a keg of lager bier, containing thirty quarts, within two hours, and “felt no intoxieating effects afterwards ;’’ another con- fessed to drinking fifteen pints ‘‘to get.an ap- petite for breakfast; "’ another to drinking sixty, seventy, eighty, and ninety glasses in a day, according to the strength of his purse; and another to drinking 150 pints in tl hours, without becoming intoxicated. It used to bea common practice, now happily exploded, among students at the German Universities, to form various lager bier drinking feats, which entitled the drinkers to different honorary designations. Thus the student who drank at one time half a glass, (/. ¢. half a pint,) was styled ‘‘a learned man,’ (gelebrter;) the drinker of a full glass was entitled to the title of “doctor ;"’ of two glasses, “ Professor ;"* of Brooklyn imbiber of one hund completely eclipse even the “burying ground.” and sixty, Whether the liquor is intoxicating or not, most people will agree that drinkers to the excess above stated. make beasts of tuemselves.— Journal of Commerce, | Remarasce Cotxcipence —The throng col- leeted to hear the Rev.
