A word of welcome for the latest and drollest effiuence of feminine fashion. For adopting an innovation in dress, however bizarre or fantas- tic, divesting it of whatever absurdity it may possess, in defiance of masculine criticism or ridicule, ca epee ye as a delightful custom before which we all bow down in time and glo- rify, the ladies have a faculty all their own. Their insensibility to derision, when employed to abrogate their — to fashion, is the sub- limity of heroism. Did they abate one inch of the ample and mdid proportions of their hoops in submi to the storm of satire di- reoted against the unconsciously offending whalebone’ Did not they, on the contrary bloom braveiy out in ampler and more splendid proportions’? And do they not now stand tri- umphant in the wide circle of their crinoline _ and their independence? Did they expand one / particle, in compliance with the demands of comfort, health, and the male sex combined, the wee bit of ornamental shingle jauntily borne on the remote edges of pom as little heads, and called by the conventional name of donnet? Nevera particle; ‘compulsion’ is ne more to their inclination than it was to that of Sir John Falstaff; and with these recollec- ‘tions fresh in our mind, shall we ag2in attempt ‘the worse than useless task of guiding or tem- Pering the feminine taste on a newly-raised a of fashion? Besides, we hsve more than alf made up our minds that the innovation of which we are speaking is not by any means to be treated with contempt, but has, with all its <drollery, eversomuch that is sensible and clever “bout it; and, apropos, it just now doth occur ¢e us that a com le explanation of what we are talking about would net be at all oe ease ibe the begi th 'o i m at jinning—(although the article we have in our mind ya prop- erly at the middle—no matter.) The peasant 8 of partsof Ireland and Scotland have a holyday dress, an important particular of which is a crimson petticoat of coarse texture tobe sure but worn with grace, and neatly — ~ at one side just sufficiently to re- veal bright glimpses of snowy stocking, but never a shadow of anything like garter, for such revelations, as every woman knows, brings into shocking conflict the poetic ideal with the blunt practical and material. This piquant little peculiarity of dress has re- mained unnoticed, “ unhonored and unsung,”’ and might forever have so remained, and passed away in obscurity but for the delicate sensibilities of that eminent gentleman of ar- tistic tastes—His Royal Highness Prince Al- bert of England. Every one knows that Her Majesty Victoria indulges annually in a pleas- ant autumnal excursion to her Castle of Bal- moral, in Scotland. It is a pretty custom for a bevy of the fairest maidens to assemble on the estate and bid her weleome—arrayed of course in their picturesque holyday attire. We have spoken of the art sympathies of the gen- tle Albert. The effect of the looped petticoat last year on his sensative soul was extraordin- ary. He recognized here a new principle of art before unknown to him, and gave himself up to its study, until his watchful spouse, thinking that perhaps not art alone but a little touch of mature might also combine thus to absorb him, resolved to afford him the oppor- tanity of indulging his tastes in the domestic cirele. In short, she adopted the scarlet petti coat herself, and no doubt gratified the Prince beyond expacssion by this mark of disinter- ested devotedness. And the Queencarried the red petticoat to London with her, and Eu- genie saw it and felf in love with it; and all the ladies of rank were sud- denly seized with a violent scarlet fever; and iy Gore Ousley transplanted the exotic to this country, causing it unexpectedly to bloom forth at Washington to the delight and wonder of every one, including the Adminis- tration and both Houses of Congress ;. and leaders in the female fashionable world at home have awakened to the practicability of creating @ new sensation, and have boldly seconded La- dy Gore ; and very soon the scarlet skirt will cease to be an exotic, and will flourish here as if “native and to the manner born.” And notwithstanding its oddity at first sight, we imagine the red petticoat will become a favorite with all. It is agreeable in its actual appearance and in its poetic su; tions. It is comfortable and healthful for wintry weather. It is useful and economical. Ladies who tra- verse unscavengered streets in it will be likely to throw weak minded young men into a state of distraction, for it reveals the dantiest bit of stocking imaginable above feet “‘like little mice stealing in and out.’’ as Sir John Suck- ling has it—and of course ladies not thus gift- ed, would never presume to wear it. On the whole, the red petticoat seems likely to become @ successful and satisfactory institution. We remember that Charles Mackay in one of his songs has pronounced against it; but then Charles Mackay’s songs, well enough in their quiet way, and quite entertaining, if you don’t read too many of them, for if you do they.are apt to act as an opiate, never yet convinced anybody of anything iu particular. Rich and ruddy colors suit the temperament of youth; Yively hearts glow at the ight of lively colors. The love of brilliant hues is implanted in us nature, who herself gratifies the taste. We shall all laugh awhile at the scarlet petticoat, but in good time we shall take it into cur affee- tions as readily as we take the wearers.—Bos ton Courter. ’ A Necessagr Procerpixe.—Day before yesterday, a number of gentlemen boarders at ene of our popular hotels, were in the office of the hotel conversing. They were talking of Rochester. merous were the remarks, and much more indignant than complimentary. One remarked that it was a very hard place— very few honest people, and those were being rapidly ruined by vicious example Another remarked that there were more people in Ro- chester that, had they their deserts, would be in Auburn, than any other city in the Union. The latter speaker was endorsed by his’ com- pasions ; and other remarks not quite 23 com- plimentary as the foregoing followed. AU at once, 4 short, very thin-saced man, rose ed bey dignantly, and stated that they had better hold up—that he was from Rochester—he was. All at once the c y retired The much aston- ished Rocheste walked up to the landlord, and icquired where gone. ““Why?"’ said the landlord; from Rochester ?”’ “Yes,” said Rochester “Oh, well,” resumed the landlord, “ that ac- counts for their absence; they're gone wp to double lock their rooms,—they'll be back fn a few inert ; Rochester departed in a reflective manner.— Buffalo Repubdic and Times. Foxyy 1 True—Dascers or Barty R:- six@.—On Saturday morning last a curious in- cident occurred in a smal! domicil on Newbury street. A young man strack by the splendor of the full moon arose from his athalf past ore o'clock, su that it was morning, and proceeded to a store in West Market Square in which he is clerk, built a fire, t out and waited for castom. Seeing that there was no *tir in the streets he stepped out and gota view of the town clock, which revealed bis error, reupon he shut up store and retraced his a:€fs home. Meantime the young ladies of the family, hearing him go out, supposed that it was morning and got up also, but, finding their “arn't you error, fastened the door and retired in, get- ting snug into the arms of Morpheus re the early bird arrived. Not being able toget in at tee and aot wishing to discover a- ture adventure to the family, he got a ler and by it obtained access to his chamber, the noise of which, however, sroused the young ladies, who rushed down stairs to their parents, with the cry that a burglar was breaking into the house. He met the whole family in a= bille, armed with pokers, &e.. and made him- self known before serious consequences ensued. She was commanded by a sharp fellow, who was inter- ested in making the trips ag profitable as pos- sible. As a general thing, a meaner table was never provided in a cheap boarding-house. During the , we were becalmed one pre on @ part of the coast which was excellent fishing ground; and the coeoet with a view of saving a dollar or two, ordered the men to Bet out their fishing tackle and try their luck. This was done; and a quantity of the finny tribe were soon transferred from their aqueous abode to the deck of the ship. ig! The captain enlatged upon the delicacy of the fish, and closed by asking, ‘‘ What say you to a fish dinner to-day, ladies and gentlemen!” Everybody said, ‘‘ By all means!’’ Attached to the ship was a negro cook, called Centaur. “‘Centaur!”’ cried the captain. “* Aye aye, sa!” ‘Cook a mess of fish for the passengers’ din- ner; and, d’ye hear, postpone that goose!’ “All right, sa!”’ Centaur seemed troubled, and scratched his wool vigorously. ‘‘ What de mean by cooking de fish and postponin’ de goose? I ben on seb- eral voyages, if not more—I ben in big hotels and little hotels, man and boy, for eber so long if no longer dan dat, and dis de fust time I eber hearn ob postponin’ a goose. It must be done, though. Wonder if Jimmy Ducks eber heard obit! He knows hapa al Just as Centaur concluded, Ji and two others of the crew d the galley door, and the bewildered cook anxiously inquired of the oracle if he knew “‘ how to postpone a goose?”” .. ‘‘ De case is dis, you see. Cap'n says to me jis now, says he, ‘ Cook a large mess ob fish for de Passengers’ dinner to-day, and ‘ postpone’ de goose.’ Now, dat is jis what dis nigger can't git through bis wool, no how, what ‘ post- ponin’’ a is!” _ “Oh Re said Jimmy, winking at his compan- ions, ‘that is easy enough. thought eve fool knew that.”’ ? ¥ sped ce “I tought so, too,’’ said Centaur, ‘an’ so I says to myself, Jimmy Ducks "I! know.” _ Well. you see,” said Jimmy, looking se- rious ; “it isn’t a common way of ‘cooking a goose;” but ven it is served up after fish, at the nobility’s dinners, they ‘ postpone’ it. Now, this is the mode: After drawing the bird, stuff it with a mixture of ‘ard-boiled eggs, chopped fine ; onions ditto ; apples ditto; biscuit pounded into bits, and portions of a fish pre- viously browned on the fire. Then put the goose into a pot, boil it for ’alf an hour; place itin the oven, and bake it for ’alf an hour; then put it on your spit, roast it until done, and serve it with vy.”? Centaur listened with attention, and, noting upon the tablet of his brain Jimmy’s direo tions, started for the galley, highly elated. Dinner time arrived, and Centaur won hon- ors by the style in which he served the fish. Dish after dish be pepo and, when every one supposed the meal to be concluded, another dish was placed before the captain, who, on re- moving the cover, to his indignation, discoy- ered the goose' His wrath was not to be sup- pressed, and, in a passion, he shouted—“ Send that infernal cook aft.”’ Centaur entered the cabin, very good-hu- morediy, having no suspicion of anything wrong, and was startled by the question— “‘Whatdo you mean, scoundrel, by disobe dience of orders?” “Beyed orders, sa; done jest what you said, sa. *Obeyed orders, tell you to postpone : “ Course you did, sa; and I did it.”” “ Did what ?” shouted the captain. “ ba Postponed do goose, sa, ‘cordin’ to diree- ions.’’ The passengers saw the joke, and burst into alaugh. The captain was somewhat mollified and requested Centaur to explain himself. “Weil. sa,” said he, “you ordered me to cook de fish and tpone de goose. Now, I nebber postpone in all my life, an’ on course didn’t know nothin’ ’bout it ; but Jimmy Ducks ‘lighten me on the subjeck, an’ I follow ’xact- ly his description. I had trouble enough ; don’t want to Postpo another, no how.”’ Everybody laughed at Centaur's explanation, and even the captain smiled. “Be off, you blockhead!” send Jimmy Duoks here.’ The darkey was off in a twinkling, and there being some curiosity as to this new style of cooking, we tried the goose, but could not tell whether we were eating fish, flesh or fowl. Jemmy soon appeared and was compelled to repeat the directions he had given to the cook, forgiveness only being extended to him on con dition that he should eat the whole of the hare The punishment was not very severe, ‘or in fifteen minutes noting but a skeleton re- mained of that 3 “ My heyes!”” was his exclaraation, when he had completed the task; “if that’s a post- poned goose, I vish the capting ud ave one postponed every week.
