Eben VOL. XI. + THE TRIALS OF A FAT MAN. The Buffalo Republican has a fat correspon- dent who writes that paper frankly thus : As L intimated to you, having come to the couclusion that there is nothing fit to eat in Buffalo. { started for New York on Friday ast. on the Central Railroad. I had no idea that a man with a respectable quantity of flesh, was looked upon with any degree of surprise outside of your city limits. Reaty ie or two tbundred and thirty-one pounds, and if I am said to be as broad as i am long, it certainly was no reason for the ticket agent at the Buffa- lo depot inquiring “ do you wish togoas freight, or a* a passenger ’"’I told him with considera- ble asperity * as a passenger, of course,’ when he charged me for tickets for two! and upon my Sears 3 with him, he very impudent- ty inquired it [ supposed that any one else could sit in the same seat I ovcupied. Bein aware that it was a matter of some doubt, said no more, but heard him matter something to himself about hogs always going as freight, as I walked off, which remark was made, | pre- sume, to an omnibus driver, standing near. It vertainly could have had no reference to me. Do you think it could? I got on the ears somewhat ruffled in temper. and after crashing two or three women from a diameter of ten tvet into about six inches, and flattening outan apple boy and pop-corn ven- der, so that their identity becomes a matter of considerable research, | finally obtained a seat opposite an old, seragzy lady and her unmar- ried daughter. They sereamed as | sat down, and [ was tempted to expand my lungs in the same manner, for the whole seat gave way with me and deposited me with my wig in a pool of tobacco juice, aud my feet in the bony, unmar- ried girl's lap. Upon extricating myself from the wreck, I discovered to my horror that I had split the back of my coat, had utterly crushed out of existence three bandboxes ; and obtained the eternal hate of the seraggy woman and ber bony daughter forever. I tried to make my apologies, but think I failed. My failure is ea- sily explained, tor whoever heard of any man making a decent apology in a fractured coat, and a head saturated with tobacco juice. I then went into another car, in consequence of the indignation of the passengers having been aroused by the two women alluded to, and jially as 1 head a gentleman with short hair and not very placid face, inquiricg if he hadn't better punch him. Having no doubt that the him reterred to meant me. I made myself as seldom as possible, and got into the nextcar. ‘The seats in the car were all weak, frail things, as four of them fell to pieces as I sat down on them. Upon making my complaint to the conductor—who asked if there was more than one of me—he suggested that I had bet- ter go into the baggage car, and sit on one of the expreas trunks. Ihey being iron-bound, he thought they d stand it, it nothing else would. Idid goin there. The baggage-man who was not very polite, asked me what I wanted. I told him I wanted to stay in there. He said it couldn't be did ; as. if Icame in, he would have to go out; there wasn’t room “for them two trunks and both of us in that there baggage ear” [accommodated matters with him by giving him a dollar, (one of twenty I had bor- rowed,) and he agreed to ride on the outside of the car, while I occupied the inside. I got up- on two express trunks, and was very comforta- ble. Indeed, I should have been perfectly so, it the ge-man hadn't kept annoying me. He kept diving his head into the ear, and ask- ing if I was going to New York, and apon my replying that I was, he would convey my re- ply to the breakman, who evidently had been taiking of me all the way from Rochester. Fi- nally, the baggage-man dove his head in again. as it to end some argument, and asked if I in- tended to go to Barnum’s Museum when I got to New York. I told him I should; which in- formation he couveyed to the breakman, who ejaculated, “* Thought so—it’s him!” I couldn't imagine what they meant. chuckled considerably, and said: “‘ Seen him for nothin.’ “Iwould a cost two shillin’s in New York’’—when I abruptly put an end to their conversation, by putting my head out of the ear door, and inquiring who was * him” what ~ would cost two shillings in New York,’ und what they had ‘seen for nothing.”’ The brakeman was somewhat startled, but reeovered sufficiently to say.“Far Boy.’ This answer afforded me : o information whatever, I backed into the car ¢gain much puzzied as to what they meant. Dreaming that [ was being broiled on an immense gridiron, for the purpose of * fry- ing’ me out. and that the fat was running from me in mnumerable rivulets, which was being caught in little tin cups, and sold by tradesmen of ail descriptions, I arrived in Sy- racuse, and there awoke, delighted to find that 1 retained my accustomed flesh, and that gongs were sounding ecstatic announcements of *‘din- ner’ I wi!l write you again soon. ‘Till then believe we )our much annoyed Par Conterputor. — 08+ Tur Worv Serau.—The translators of the Bible have left the Hebrew word Selah, which eeeurs so often in the Psalms, as they found it. and of course the English reager oftem asks his minister, orlearned friend, what it means. And the minister or learned friend has most often been obliged to confess ignorance, because it is & matter in regard to which the most learned bave by no means been of one mind. The Tar- gums, and most of the Jewish commentators, give to the word the meaning of eternal/y for- ever. Rabbi Kimchi regards it as a sign to el- evate the voice. The authors of the Septua- gint translation appear to have regarded it av a musical or rythmical note. Hender rezarded it ay indicating a change of note; Mathewson us a musical note, equivalent. perhaps, to the word repeat. According to Luther and others, it means si/ence! Gesenius explaines it tomean, * Let the instruments play and the singers stop. "' Woeher regards it as equivalent to swrs1m cor- da—up, my soul! Sommer, after examinin, all the seventy-four passages in which the wor oceurs, reeoguizes in every case * an actual ap- peal or summons to Jebovah.’’ They are calls tor aid and prayers to be heard, expressed ther with entire directness or if not in the im- rative, ‘* Hear, Jehovah! ”’ or, Awake Jeho- vab' and the like still earnest address to God that he would remember and hear, ete. The word itself he regards as indicating a blast of the trumpets by the priest. Selah, itself, he thinks an abridged expression. used for Hig- gaion Selan—Higgaion indicating the sound of the stringed instruments. and Selah a vigorous blast of trumpets —Li//iotheca Sacra. Ee The New York Times, referring to our | national tendency to exaggeration, ip connec- tion with the present monetary troubles, says : “ Tf our word was to be taken for our national character to October, 1856, we were the most progressive, far-seeing, sagacious, and success- ful twenty millions of mortals that ever ruled the realm of nature, and made the earth a mo- ther of men. If our own word is to be taken for our national character in October, 1857, we are the most blundering, headlong, silly, and incompetent generation of speculators, not to say swindlere, thatever trifled with magnifi- cent materials, and threw away solden oppor- tunities. It is peedless to say that we are revi ling ourselves now just as extravagantly as we lauded ourselves then.”’ THE WOMAN WHO LIVES WITHOUT EATING. ‘Medicus,’ a correspondent of the Utica (N. Y.) Morning Herald writes as follows of this remarkable case : Having beard and read much concerning @ woman who lives without eating. I resolved upon visiting her. at her home in Chester, Warren Co., N. Y_.—instead of Sarat Co, as bas been stated—and if the history of the case contains enough of interest for publication, I most cheerfully tender it to you Hisrory Previovs.—Her name is Betsy Hays, a native of this State, aged 27, a mar- ried woman, of a nervo-sanguine temperament; no hereditary disease known of in her ances- tors. Her busband states that she always en- joyed good health until some three years ago, when she was seized “ with a fit,’ which from his description I should say had been of the convulsive form of hysteria. These convulsions continued to increase in severity with the dis- eases incindent to this condition supervening, until June 4th, 1856. when she fell into a state of complete unconsciousness, trom which she has never been aroused. Since this time she has partaken of nothing excepting a little lemonade, in February. 1357, and since then nothing, not excepting water. This her husband has given his affidavit to, and whose veracitycannot be questioned, have watched her for weeks, and testified to the same fact. Present Conviston.—Patient when not in convulsions, lies in a state of complete epistho- tonos with the head so much flexed that the fore- head. instead of the occiput. occupies the pil- low ; the left arm 1s flexed at the elbow and wrist, with the back of the hand resting upon the. stomach ; it has not been removed from its position since June, 1856; there is a constant and severe convulsive movement in one or the other shoulders; mouth open. with a constant lateral movement of lower jaws; color, beat, and moisture of surface, naturx!; the whole muscular system of the extremities isina state of tonic spasin ; little or noemaciation—tongue, mouth and fauces. appear natural. .All the senses except smell seem to be oblit- erated while this is morbidly acute, so much so that the smell of food of all kinds, perfumery, and in fact anything having an odor, will in- duce the most violent convulsions, and excite severe efforts at emesis; the pupil of the eye presents the appearance usually found in am- aurosis ; the chest is well developed, aud from its shupe I should judge the lungs to be fully inflated ; on percussion of the chest, a reson- ance clearer than in health is observed over all parts; by auscultation, no respiratory or ex- piratory murmur is heard upon the closest ex- amination, the minute air cells seem to be filled with air, so completely as to allow none to enter; the average number of respirations are one once in eight minutes; and when she does respire, it 1s with a convulsive motion, similar to one trying to catch his breath ; from examination I aheuld judge the air was con- fined to the larger bronchial tubes. and did not enter the air cells, hence cannot act on the blood ; she is stated to have been sixty-two minutes without breathing. The heart ocen- ies its normal position, and is of natural size ; it acts violently but feebly ; is intermittent va- tying from 30 to 180 beats per minute; there is a loud blowing sound, between the first and sec- ond sounds of the heart. so it is with difficulty the natural sounds are distinguished ; the pulse can be seldom felt at the wrist ; the abdomen is perfectly flaccid, so that the vertebre of the ee column are easily counted through its nulls. Sach are some of the abnormal conditions ot this truly wonderful woman. A more minute report for medical men, will be prepared and published in a short time. I wil! offer no de- ductions, leaving each one to form his own con- clusions from the facts here stated. AcciDEst to Jerome Ravet.—The Boston Courier says:—Last Thursday night, during the performance of the new piece, Jerome Ra- vel wet with an unfortunate accident which will deprive the publie of his presence fora short time. In one of the scenes he ia obliged to pass rapidly through the air, at a distance of about six feet from the stage, sustained by a wire. On Thursday evening this wire, an im- perfect one it afterwards proved to be, parted, precipitating Jerome to the ground. He had not yet appeared from behind the scene, so the audience knew nothing of the mishap. A part of a sword was fastened to Bis back— one of the tricks of the pantomine—upon which he fell, breaking, as was subsequently ascer- tained, two of his ribs. As he was led to the green room, his face and bearing indicated great suffering, but, notwithstanding his injuries, he unhesitatingly returned, and went through with the remainder of his part, showing no outward sign of disability. This ix certainly a moat re- markable example of fortitude and fuaithful- ness. Immedintely after the accident occurred it was reported to Antoine, who merely said, “Jerome hurt?’”’—but in a tone that spoke more than the words—and rushed on to thestage to convulse the audience with laughter, while bis own heart must have been sad enough. Tae Rep Perticeat.—‘ Nothing New °— Me#igg says that the newspapers mention the wearing of red petticoats as a great novelty; but he thinks they betray their ignorance in regarding the introduction of ‘ Balmorals’’—a recent innevation upon white skirts. Mrs. Bridget O'Shaughnessy, of Mohawk street, has worn a red petticoat for a number of years. Besides, McFigg has a distinct recollection of being dandled on the knee of an oleaginous nurse, who warbled variations upon an aria having for its theme the following couplet : * Nettieut, Netticut, With a red petticoat .** MeFigg has demonstrated to our satisfaction the antiquity of red petticoats, generally ; and he says that the antiquity of Mrs. 0’Shaughnes- be ean be proved by ocular demonstration.— ltéea Telegraph. Bopy Snarcaing.— Vhe people of St. Thomas, C.W.. were greatly excited, afew days since, by the discovery that the body of Mrs. Patten, who died on the 30th of December, had been exhumed by body snatchers, for anatomical purpose. The body was found in a room used as an Orange Lodge, after it had undergone dissection. A shoemaker. named Sparling, and a Dr. Saughel, were implicated in the disinterment. the latter had been instructing a class in anatomy: one of his pupils being a shoemaker, another a tailor, a third a carpenter, and the fourth a clerk ina dry-goods store. The mutilated remains of Mrs. Patten were reinterred, a very large con- course following them to the grave. The viola- tors of the grave will be punished. Tur Rewarkasce Case at Wexnaw.—We learn (says the Boston Traveller) that Miss Rebecea D. Briggs, of Wenham who died sud- denly at Manchester, N.H.,Jan 12th, of heart disease, at the age of seventeen years, was buried at Wenham, Jan. 21, nine days after death. Thisis the case where the continued life appearance of the face, upon which a rosy hue lingered for several days after death, led to a PeSrmenest of the funeral ceremonies, from e that it might prove to be acase of suspen- ded animati nly. 4 —The bill of this com- Parliament, TRL eG RAP: any, to be lnid before nerease of capital by creation of and the borrowing gaye or ginal capital of £257,000, now all found, ‘in consequence of eire the control of the company,” inad purposes of the undertaking. ‘The shares of the company are offered at £500 diseount, These are £1,000 shares, fully paid up.
