BUFFALO IN A BLAZE! nd Cowhiding Affair— er Muss—An Ardent Admirer ped. {From the Buffalo Express, Feb. 1.) Our city was thrown into quite an excitement on Saturday afternoon, by one of those affairs which indicates a sort of chivalry that is more prevalent in metropolitan towns. One of our citizens was raw-hided in the street and in the _— of numerous spectators, by a Mr. untington. the reputed husband of Susan De- bin. The name of the sufferer we suppress, on account of his family. The circumstances, as they occurred, are briefly these: The gentleman became enamored of the charms of Susan, and wrote hera note proposing a mecting and an acquaintance which might be mutually agree- able. The following is the note in question, and it speaks for itself : iss Susas Denis: My Dear Madam: Hay- ing long been fascinated with you. I am bold enough to ask whether, under any circumstan- ces, you ever yield to a man’s infatuation for a beautiful woman. If ever you have done so, and can be prevailed upon to allow me the pleasure of an evening with you—not at your public entertainment, for I always possess my self of that pleasure—but where [ may be alone with you, and feast my soul on “ beauty una- dorned,’’ I will endeavor to make it yield, not delight it may be to you, but an acceptable equivalent. df, in short, twenty-five or thirty dollars could, at all, induce you to grant a stranger an interview, it will. give me great pleasure to tea myself a gentleman not only capable of loving you, but of making fitting amends for your generous indulgence. Should you decide to favor me, a note, — time and place, addressed to Charles W. Watson, and slipped under the door of room No. 12, * Harvey's Buildings,’ corner of Main and Swan streets— entrance on Swan—before the hour of five o'clock, p. m., to-morrow,—for I may not be able to get word by the post office before you leave—will be welcomed with infinite delight. Pledse do favor me if possible. Very hastily, your ardent, &c., Cuartes W. Watson. This note, fortunately or unfortunately for the ardent writer, fell into the hands of Mr Huntington, who felt his wife’s honor and vir- tue insulted, and became exceedingly indig- nant thereat. He counselled her to accede to the terms proposed. and grant the interview that had been solicited, and answered the note himself, in her behalf, and in favorable lan- age. over the signature of ‘Sincere.’ The ollowing is the response of Miss Denin’s ad- mirer : My Dear Miss Dexin: A note responsive to mine of yesterday, signed “ Sincere,”’ and cage by your own sweet self, 1 cannot doubt, just come tome. Need I tell you how very happy I am to know you hare confidence enough in me to allow me an opportunity to Prove myself a gentleman, even in your eyes, not only as “ sincere’’ as yourself, but equally as “discreet.” Believe me, my dear Madame, you shall have no oceasion to *‘chide’’ or “‘seold”’ me, and I trust also, no occasion to regret the indulgence you have so kindly ex- tended to me. When I wrote you, it was with the hope that I might be able to be with you for more than a “passing hour,’’ and I yet trust that it may be my sweet privilege to do so; and if it may not be, I will endeavor to “improve the hour.’” You suggest your room ig the American asa place of meeting, unless I name a place more ivate. I should have no objection to the merican were I not so well known there to proprietors and servants—having domiciled there until quite recently. Ihave in my eye a quiet, pretty place, to which it will give me pleasure to take you, and I will have things nicely arranged there- after, should it be agreeable to you, and I would suggest that at the hour you mentioned —4 o'clock—you step into the Reading Room of the Young Men’s Association, under the American Hall, where I will meet you and give you an escort to the place aforesaid If it will not be agreable to you to adopt this ar- rangement, kind enough to notify me by three p. m., by note slipped as before into No. 12, Harvey's Building, and I will then aceede to any arrangements you may suggest. Regretting to have to trouble you with so long a missive—in my proper hand this time— pan prio hoping that nothing may come in the way of our meeting pleasantly, I remain yours very sincerely, Cusntes W. Warson. srieeiny on Saturday afternoon, Bliss Denin met her new aequaintance at the place appointed, and the two repaired to the corner of Main and Eagle streets, where they took a seat in a buggy and dr: off. Huntington, it appears, had a body of fiends in wait ng to ob- serve the movements of Susan and her com- panion. F Among those who were with Huntington, was Mr. Kent of the theatre, the gentleman, if we recoliect rightly. who was rawhided in the streets of Cleveland a few days since. The baggy with Miss Susan and her friend passed down street, and Mr. Iluntingten and his friends followed in a carriage. They proceeded to a house on Carroll street, near Michigan, where Miss Denin’s friend handed her down, and Huntington joined them. Susan intro- duced him to the gentleman as her husband. saying that they could settle the affair in their own way. Mr. Huntington then struck the individual repeated blows over the head and shoulders with a whip, when they closed and fell and rose again. and then went down again when the assailed broke away from Huntington and ran off, leaving his horse and buggy and a sword cane, which Huntington has in his pos- session, and upon which is inscribed the name of a citizen of unsullied reputation heretofore. Thus ended the affair 2-8 -- Bap Suon Leatuer.—A correspondent of the Scientific American, writing from Boonville. Ark., complaina bitterly and justly of the mis- erable character of the leather employed in vommon boots and shoes. He says: * Good leather, if left whole, is tenacious, amd nearly water-proof; but, when split, its tenacity and peat xe! quality are destroyed. If we take a tbic! iece of woolen cloth, and split it through the middle. how long will it last’ It will soon go to shreds It isthe same in degree with leather ; the fibres of it are interlaced, and bound firmly together; but, by splitting, they are severed. and their mechanical adhe- siveness destroyed."’ He complains severely of the boots and shoes made in the East. and sent to Arka’ He says: “One of every pair of shoes is cesreny made with a bad fore- a good hindpart, and the other rice versa; the result is, that theone with the bad forepart is much sooner worn out that the oth- er, but both have to be thrown away together. “«T need annually,’ he saya, * six pairs of this miserable sort of store shoes. costing here about two dollars per pair; and from the very start they cannot keep my feet dry, all beoause they are made of split and ill-selected leather. If the leather were not split, it would last twice aslong. If L could get better leather (unsplit). I could afford to pay a higher price for it, and it would not cost me any more for shoes per an- num, because I would not uire so many pairs; at the same time it would be much bet- ter for me, because they would keep my feet dry.” Taz Mance to tar Grave ix 1857.—What a mighty procession has been moving toward the grave during the past year! At the uusual est mate, since the first of Jenuary, 1357,more than thirty-one million five hund ied thousand of the worid’s populstion have gone down to the grave. Place them in long array. aud they will ive @ moving column of more than thirteen j Ante to every mile of the circumference of the globe. What a spectacle, as they move on, tramp, tramp. the ‘Dead March” giving its tuneral netes as they go to the silent shades!”’ WASHINGTON, D. C., THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1858. NO. 1,573.
