LOCAL INTELLIGENCE MEETING of THE MERCHANTS’ EXCHANGE A SOCIATION —A meeting of the above Association ‘was held last night, at their rooms, over the City Savings Bank, the president, Peter Bacon, Esq in the chair. The secretary, John F. Ellis, being absent, Lewis Newton, Esq, was appointed secretary pro. tem ‘The chair stated the principal object for which the meeting bad been called, wax to take into consideration a bill which had been introduced into the U. &. The jury returned a verdict of guilty of stealing a tin box of the value of one cent. To-day, the Court proceeded to the trial of William A. Tur House Ixvestication.—Captain F.A. Klopfer, Chief of Police, sta ted from this city on Monday with authority from the House of Representatives to arrest J. B. Williamson, of New York, who had been summoned to appear asa witness in the investigation now in rogress relative to the printing, &c , but retu to ap- | oa Captain Klopfer returned last night with r. Williamson in custody, and took Soagings at the National Hotel Mr. J.D Williamson is called as a witness in the alleged corruption case, charged against cer- tain members of last Congress. He states that he declined obeying the summons of the Com- mittee. because he was under heavy bonds not to leave the State of New York. He also says that the officers of Congress kidnapped him yester- day, and would not gr nt him time to consult legal counsel or sue out a habeus corpus, He contends that the Committee have no right to question him respecting bis private business, and avows his intention not to auswer concern- ing the matter pertinent to the charges in rela- tion to which he is cited. Matinee Musica.e —A matince musicale came off yesterday at the resideace of Mrs. Jas. Hoban, in this city, on 15th street, which was the most brilliant entertainment of the kind that ever took place in Washington. The artists who | seb ylemngey in it were the Misses Heron. Gonzales. who proves to be one of the most accomplished ba itones in thg country, though an amatear Yoealist only, and Mr. George French, adelight- ful amateur tenor, also lent the powerful attrac- tions of their respective voices to complete the enjoyment of the large company of fashionable ladies and gentlemen present. At 4 p.m. the company adjourned to the dining room, where bountifal refresiments had been prepared in Potentini’s besf style.
