WASHINGTON, D. C., TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1858. POISONING AS A SCIENCE. Among the numerous and various kinds of suicide, that are continuall. shocking the pub- lie sensibility, if indeed there remains any to be shocked, that which results from taking poison is the most frequent. Poison is also a trequent instrument for committing homicide. it is now about a year since the country was filled with rumors touching the “‘ National Ho- tel sickness,”’ as it we -alled. Much was said ot ghe inmates being poisoned. Investigation committees came to a decided conclusion that there was no poisoning at all, but that all the evil effects were traceable to miasmatie influ- ence. Sofaras we have conversed with the vietims who escaped death, they express the firm belief that they took poison in their drink. An intelligent member of Congress is of this opinion, and says he still feels the effects of it. in any event, the reputation of the hotel effectually damaged. It stood for a long time in gloomy solitude, deserted of all. It could be had for the asking. though itonce rented for ten thousand dollars. No Southerner weuld touch it. It seemed destined to remaina ruin, to be looked’ and escaped from. But is there anything in this world withouthope? Hereaf- ter let none despair even of ed aes cases. A Yankee gentleman is said to have offered to take the house at a nominal rent. perhaps with easy condition, and to restore it to its prestine reputation. He opened the house this winter, furnished it but little, and only as the rooms should be ealled for. He announced low prices for board and lodging, which seasonably met the ** pee times,” and now the hotel is said ull. to be That thoroughfare, so well known to visitors from all parts of the Union, is said to have re- sumed its wonted life, and none but the over- timid now dread the ‘National.’ The man who made this bold experiment deserves to sue- ceed. Heis a public benefactor. Even the desire for money in this case seems to have been made a blessing. And why should there be any more attemps at poisoning? The seeret assassins must have derived little comfort from what they effected in that daring attempt, and they will not probably repeat it. Yet we fea the seience of poisoning bes been but too suc- cessfully studied in this age, both in Europe and America. Our readers may have heard of the noted-woman Uottfried, who lived in Bremen a quarter of a century ago. She was a widowof fascinating appearance, in her youth beautiful ; in more advanced life still attractive by those preparative and decorative arts, of which wo- man knows too well how t» avail herself. But a fatality seewed to attend her. All connected with her sickened and died in strange ways. Two husbands, her father, her mother, her brother, and several children disappeared in a short period of time. [t was her lot to order no less than thirteen coffins from the un- dertaker, who lived opposite to her, and al] for near and dear friends. Gottfried faithfully nursed them during their painul illness. She was an object of pity and sympathy, while she seemed wonderfully resigned to the inscrutinable decrees of Providence. A perfect Niobe in her “ childless woe’’ she appeared to be, and a Niobe she was, for her heart was as hard as that celebrated statue. Received into good society, her company was courted by per- sons of rank and consideration. Twice widow, she still had suitors. She had a weil furnished house, an easy fortune. But still she coutin- ued to drink of the cup of affliction, was still pitied and prayed fur. A model of the tender affections, she loved intensely, but her love seemed to kill every object on which it alighted. The venerable parent, the manly hysband, the beautiful children withered and died. A Mr. Kumpff and his wife, though dissuaded 4 friends, took lodgings in the same house wit Madam Gottfried. She was all kindness to ahem and theirs. Bat Madame K. was seized with vomiting, and died under the assiduous nursing of this disguised Alectu. The children and servants met the same fate and received the same attentions. She gave them all their death-portion and smoothed their dying pillow Mr. Kumpff himself was seized ; be ransack- ed the house from garret to cellar to find the cause; he believed there was some decaying sabstanee, some fetid ethalation, like that of the National, which did all the mischief; he had the boards lifted and the walls examined, ail in vain, but at fength a white powder was observed on a bitof meat, which had been left and it proved to be arsenie. Madam G. was ar- rested. imprisoned, and though at firstafeetng great horror at the idea of being aecused 2s a suurderess, finally confessed to all, and tomuch more that she said she could not remember. She was sentenced to be beheaded, and that bead preserved in spirits, and her skeletonina case may now be seen in the museum at Brem- en. Letters from Marseilles state that an Ameri- can ship, the Adriatic, had run down a French steamer, destroying life and pro; ty to a con- siderable extent. The Adriatic was placed unker embargo until the damages could be ju- dicially settled, but she surprised the authori- ties by stealing off. ‘‘ The French Government will apply at Washington for redrese."" A ter from Marseilles, dated January 10, gives the following additional ‘tieulars : % Binee yesterday the whole town has been talking of a strange affair, which it is thought may give rise to serious diplomatie complications. You remember the fearful collision between the Lyonnais, a French steamer belonging to the essrs. Gauthier Brothers. and Adriatic, an American ship, when the former vessel foundered. Upon that occasion the American captain left the scene of the disaster without troubling himseif about the result, and on reaching his destination omitted to make any mention in his report of the unfortunate oceur- rence. Several months having elapsed, the Messrs. Gauthier learned that the Adriatic was lying at anchor in the harbor of Civtut. An order was immediately obtained to seques- trate her and bring her here, where a stricter surveillance is maintained in the port. Capt. Durham lost no time in protesting against this measure, and appealed to our Tribunal of Com- merce, in which the pleading of a young avocat, M. Aycard, himself an American by descent, gained the day for his client. From this judg- ment the French owners of the Lyonnais ap- pealed to the Court of Appeal at Aix, and the cause was brought before that tribunal, when the previous decision was quashed, and the American ship declared a lawful prize. During the proceedings in this latter court the Adriatic was unrigged. Captain Durham was not the man to submit quietly to an ad- verse sentence, and accordingly. in concert with one of his fellow countrymen, be devised the following scheme. The ship Meaher, com- manded by Captain Smith, was also under se- questration on account of a heavy debt con- tracted by her, and which had not been paid. Captain Smith, a daring and resolute fellow, contrived to bring her alongside of the Adri- atic. This maneuyre being effected, the -Mesher’s cargo was shifted in a very short space of time to the hold of the Adriatic, on board of which at the same time the other's rigging was transferred. The captain then followed, and at three o'clock in the morning of Saturday last the Adriatic passed the Jo- liette port. At this point there is always on duty a boat of the Custoin-house, and the of- fiver who was in her, hailed the ship, when Captain Durham leaned over the side. “ Are your papers all right 2° asked the officer. “Oh, yes.’ answered the captain. ‘ What's the name of your ship?’ “The Movon,’’ replies he, and out to sea the Adriatic goes, thongh condemned to be sold for the benefit of Messrs. Gawthier. with her double cargo. Her depar- ture was not percetved till broad daylight, and then a complaint was lodged, but a whole day bad been lost. They say that the prefect or- dered out the Chacal, a war paddle steamer stationed in the old port. and away she has gone to catch the Adriatic, if she can. She 4s not returned from her ehase, and our sea- faring men think the American has run into sowe creck along the Spanish coast. Captain Smith, just before his dopestar, bought three guns, other arms, and some powder, all of which were conveyed from the Meaher to the Adriatic. This curious affair will, perhaps, not so easily be settled.” Yaxkez Taoventrvyess —An acqusint- ance of ours was up in Connecticut one day last winter, to visit a friend, who was a manufac- turer. The shaft of the manufacturer's water- wheel had been broken that afternoon, under a great accumulation of ice, and he was in great trouble, for he had searched long to find asuit- able stick, and knew not where to find another. It he could find one, it would be green, and un- fit for immediate use. Very early in the morn- ing, while the day scarcely dawned. the manu- facturer and his guest were at the mill, to see what should be done. A farmer, who lived two or three miles off, was already looking on. As the mapufaxeturer looked painfully ath trophe, «* ad break, that, ”* said the farmer. “ Yex, very bad, e maoufac- turer. “Can't mend that stick, can you?” said the farmer. ‘No,’ said the manufactu- rer; ‘and the worst is, I don’t know where to get another.” 11,”’ quoth the furmer, “ I guess Tecan tell you where ye can find ove.” You ean?” said the manufactu- r ‘ where i: ’* © Well,” said the farm- er,“ [ thought that shaft would break, likely as not, sometime or other, and I had a tree in my woods I thought [ would make a stick to suit you; and so [ cut it down and snaked it home, and it's been seasoning more’n a year. > when J heard yourshaft was broke, [ thought I'd come over and let you know.”’ “You're just the man [ wanted to see,”’ said the manu- facturer, ‘if only it was light enough. How much do you ask fur the stick, if it will suit me?” ‘Oh I'msure ‘twill suit ye, or [shouldn't a’cutit down; and about the price, I guess you and J eap agree. It’s a nice stick you'll see. if you‘re a mind to come over.’ It was #ome time before the farmer would set azprice ; bat at last he guessed $100 would be about right. ‘- I'll eome over and see it after break- fast,’* said the manufacturer. He did so, and told his visitor afterwards that, under the cir- cumstances, the stick was worth 3500 to him Do such people need protection ?-or are they able to take care of themselyes.—Journal of Commerce A Dwen Wairriye as Eacie.—A large bald eagle pounced upon a sturdy Muscovy drake, on Thursday evening, at Mr. John Rowlatt’s farm in Prince George county, Va , in order to make a meal of bim, but the drake, not relish- ing such au unceremonious call, put his mus- cular energies into very uctive exercise, and made so scientific a use of them as to give his feathered majesty a sound drubbing—where- upon the latter determined not to ‘ mount up- wards’ again with an empty stomach, made a vigorous attack upon one of the lady ducks of the yard, who was fortunately rescued from the talons of the hungry and savage bird be ure she sustained any serious injury. The lot had been purchased in New-York and was consigned to a firm of paper-makers. Mr. H. stopped them in transitu, examined them, took whathe wan- ted, and finally let thom pass to the paper-mill.
