EVENING WASHINGTON CITY: BATURDAY. _ De Perr THE weer pay THE WEEKLY STAR. The crowded state of our columns Prevents ‘us from noting fn detail the rich contents of the Weekly fasne, now ready for delivery ; it is quite sufficient to say that it is fally up to any previous number in its completeness as @ Grst class family paper Price 3 cents per number, and $1 25 for the ‘volume. rr SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Jutelligencer is devoted to news and Congress to-day. The Uniex again pays its comptiments to Sts “Mrs. Grundy,” which title it has firmly fastened on the London Zim-s, than which no other journal the world over is so fairly enti- tled to wear it. The Times having adepted the misrepresentations of the abolition press with refererce to the influences bringing about the recent defeat of Fremont, moans lugubri- ously over the strength of the‘slave power’ and prophecies wisely over the utter impossibility that the apprehension of a dissolution of the Uuien can prove so effective in four years thence, as io November last. Tho Union pricks both these bubbles with a master hand. We also find in ths Uxton the speech of Sen- ator Pugh, last delivered. ‘We regret, on read Ing such an effort, that the Star has no room no its eclumns for the reproduction of the Yeading speeches ia Congress. It is » great argument indeed, though the work of the Youngest member of the body. The day is not(far hence when its author will rank, the world over as one of the most intellectual of living statesmen. He possesses not only pro- fundity of mind, but great attainments for his position. and much industry. These qualities and acquirements mark him for one of the rising men of the country. ———— + WASHINGTON NEWS AND GOSSIP. William Herry Hurlbut.—This individual ® peared in the Intelisgencer yesterday morn og in vindication of what that journal stig- matizes as the “ unworthy strictures” (upon him) of the party press and “ some reflections in the Senate.” In view of the fact that the system of abo- Hitioniem is universally one of swaeping per- sonal detraction, misrepresentation and de. Bucciation, the “ strictures” of which Hurl- but complains are wortby of their subjcot, who richly deserves them; for a more violently abusive man of his cloth and class is tobe found nowhere else, or his pen in the Edinburg Review belies him sadly. He says in the Intelligencer— ‘The Edinburgh Review is responsible for itself, but, if the character of an American citizen is to be discussed, it shall be discussed fairly.” Query—Did he“ diecuas fairly” the char- acter of the millions of American citizens con- cerning whom he crowded s0 many false and infamous statements and imputations into the Edinbargh Review? A high idea this, that an Abolitionist may falsify, abuse, villify and misrepresent his countrymen without stint in furtherance of that abclition inevitability—a Propensity to toady England and everything Eoglish—and then claim personally an exemption from tharp criticism! That is, that the truth shall not be tcld of him, in exposure of the false pretence under which influence is sought to be obtained for his slanders and misrepre- sentations—the pretence that he is a South Carolinian in aught but the accident of birth there, of peripatetic New England parents. The Intelligencer calls him “ of South Car- olins."’ Did he not vote for Fremont in a non-slavebolding State at the recent election? He offers to rest his “title to the character of ® patriotic citizen of the United States upon the doctrines which are set for‘h in the article which has excited the indignation of the Sen- ator from my (his') own State.” He is evidently as indignant at the idea of being thought unpatriotic, as his co-laborers and intellectual superiors, Fred Douglass and Wm. Loyd Garrison, are. Benedict Arnold was in the habit of defending (in England) his treachery, en the assumption that it was patriotism of ths loftiest kind. Apropos—in the Edinburgh Review article be avails himse!f of the false pretence that the writer is an Englishman ; that being the style (mask) under which he secks to get weight for his article over the water. On this side, though a Fremont voterin New York, he seeks to play off on the public the South Car- olina “ dodge.”” The Walker Meeting —A late New York Herald contains a report of the proceedings of a meeting on Saturday night iast at the St Charles Hotel, of “ the friends of Nicaragua’”’ —i. ¢. Walker This report is note-worthy, aa proving the fact that with the exception of Mr. Chas Morgan and Placide, the actor, the names of nearly all the others connected with the affair are those of persons either not citi- sens of the United States or not business men of the city, but individuals whose names have of late years often appeared in the press in various quarters of the land in connection with fillibustering sobemes—as participators or sym- pathizers with fillibustering. Indeed, Mr. Mor gn, personally so deeply interested in su:- taining Walker, may be said to have been the only bona fide New York busiress man known to the public who participated in this meet- ing. Yet it will go through the proes asa mee!- ing of citizens of New York. Gen. Thomas Jefferson Green, formerly of Texas, was one «f the speakers. We extract from the Herald's report of bis remarks sufficient to inform the reader of the tone and temper cf the proceed- ings jen. Green next made some remarks, I bad rather fight, said he, than speak [ think action is the duty of the soldier. I consider the principal object of our meeting is to or. ganize a great public spirit of sympathy in this city. Our object is to stop Marvy or any other white-livered doughface politician who is opposed to Walker. (Cheers) 1 am for protecting Americans in their rights.’’ The sehen e devised was to send a commi'- tee throughout the South soliciting money, arms, munitions and men for Walker’s cause. The newspapers tell of a current attempt to organise and send a force of five hundred men from New York to aid Walker, (to become food for the yellow fever and cholera) who shall land in Hondures and march thence some five hundred miles to join Walker. In the first place, if that white-livered doughfeced politician,’’ “ Morsy,”? permits svy such ex;edition to leeve New York just Buw—whicb is exceeding questionable with us—we have no ides that Honduras will per- STAR.
