Mr. Roderiok Rollins was a bachelor who had seen some forty nine summers, and al- though he wasa bundle of eccentricities, there | were few men more popular with old married ladies, or even with such single ones as had ceased to be flighty end had begun to take a sober view of the pomp: and vanities of this wicked world. It is just possible, indeed, that the gentleman’s popularity might be attribu- | art to a very handsome estate which | ted in he had inherited from his father; for I have generally observed that a large landed proper ty ia a great enhancer of the wit, beauty, or profandity of its posseesor As Mr. Rolling peas lumbered along in life, he naturally ecame less and less disposed to rapid locemo- tion, and at the time he is introduced to the reader, he had dropped one and another of hia regular visiting acquaintances among the la- dies, until the Amt had dwindled down in number to exactly three families In one of these families—that of Mr. Petti grew—there were twoelderly young ladies, named Rachel and Amelia These ladies were of the respective ages of thirty-seven and thirty-nine, and having outlived their taste for balls and jams, now solaced themselves with the society of a few old beaux who would ovcasionally drop in of an evening and have a uiet game of backgammon with them by the side of an old-fashioned Liverpool coal fire. Among these visitors, none was more welcome than was Mr. Rollins. His stories were gen erally long, and he had much to say of the ead degeneracy of the present fast age; but then, beside being rich in the funds, he was rich in his reminiscences of the olden tims. He would every now and then so affoctingly allude to the brilliant evenings of bygone years, when he used to dance wich the Misses Rachel and Amelia at the public assemblies, that the young ladies would, in imagination, revel again through those gay and festive scenes; and, as Mr. Rollins named one end another of the belles ang their adorers who used to figure in the Spanish dances and ia- dies’ chains of that simple era of Terpsichore, the tears would course onc another down their innocent noses. Mr Rollins was also a con- noisseur, and a highly-gifted critic in green and black teas, and was well posted in cough and rheumatic medicines generally. Since he had got along in years, he nad likewise come to tuke a great interest in church matters; he kept the run of proceedings of all the annual conventions, Sad wis supposed to be familiar with the private opinions of several of the Bishops. ow, none of these subjects were indifferent ones to his fair companions, and as such human weaknesses as love and marriage seemed out of the question, the intercourse between them was as calin and cool as moon- shine in winter. The condition of amcient beaux and ancient belles who have retired from the drawing rooms of mirth and fashion, and have taken to chess and needlework, and to sober reminiscences of the heart-conflicts they have undergone, is not of the cheorless character which some consider it. It may be likened to that of pensioned soldiers carefully housed in some snug harbor provided by the State, where they may rest and smoke and talk of the mighty deeds they have done for the residue of their lives. The w: Te over, the battles have been fought; and what, though one may have lost an arm, another a leg, and a third has been lopped of all his limbs, yet the pain arising from the wounds have been long forgotten, and they now re- member but the incidents and the glory of the conflicts. One of the other families which Mr. Rollins used to visit, was that of the weil known Dr. Anodyne. The Doctor himself was a gentle- man of the old echool, and his lady could give you the history of every family of note in the metropolis, but the great attraction to Mr Rollins was the society of their daughter Har tiet. Miss Harriet had been in her day a eclebrated beauty, but haying now attained her fortieth year, it was generally supposed that the grand meridian of her charms had been passed. In carly life there had been some talk of a match between ber and Mr. Rollins, but this had long blown over and their conversation was now, to all human ap- pearance, as rational and animpassioned as though they were a couple of prosy philoso- phere. The remaining family, honored with the pleasant acquaintanceship of Mr. Rollins was that of Mrs. Atterbury, a widow lady of considerable wealth and position. She was the sister of Mrs. Anedyne, and consequently, her daughter, the amiable Mies Anna Maria, was own cousin to Miss Harriet, and very nearly of thesameripeage. Both these young ladies were on terms of the most agreeable in timacy with the Misses Rachel and Ameiia Pettigrew They had been companions in girlhood, bad promenaded on the Battery, had taken moonlight walks in company with egch othe; and their lovers through the gray cled walks of St John’s Park, and would doubtless sometimes have extended their strolls to the Fifth avenue, were it not thet the time L treat of was anterior to the discovery of that fashionable thoroughfare. When these fair spinsters would get together and grow in- spirited and loquacious as they sipped their hyson, Mr. Rolling was their toast and their oracle. But delightful as was the relation subsisting between them and their antiquated beau, it was temporarily deatined to a very singular kind of an interruption. Allatonce, as one of the wonders of the world, a new light sprang upin Mr. Rollins’s mind, and this light was none other than a reflection froxa the torch of Cupid. How itcame to pass that that heart of adamant, which during the fervor and pas- sion of youth had resisted the well- directed volleys from female eyes of every color, and had at last succumbed, must forever remain a mystery. But Mr Rollins’s love wag as droll as it was untimely. Worse than the poor ass of the echoolman, hesitating between two bundles of hay, Mr Rollins had fallen in love with all four of his female companions at the same time. At first, this bachelor loye developed iteelf ia periodical fits of partiality for one or the other of the ladies, just as it happened ; vacillating, as it were, from day to day Thus, for a while, Mise Amelia Pettigrew would be the queen of his affections. He would call to mind some roguish dimple of her girlhood, and what a splendid set of teeth one of her regular ringing laughs would disclose in those days of remote antiquity. When Mizs Amelia was thus boosted on the topmost round of Mr Rollins’s ladder of weatheroock admiration, she would Sapraton d be precipi- tated to the ground by a dim shadowy recol jection on the part of that gentleman of the hewitching manner in which Miss Anna Maria Atterbury used to dance nearly a quarter of a century ago. Then the tender memories of his early partiality for Miss riet Anodyne would so stir up poor Rollins’s vagrant sensi- bilities that he almost made up his mind to op the question to her. He prebably would ave done so on a certain afternoon, had he not stopped in at the Pettigrews on his way to Dr Anodyne’s. It happened on this ooca- sion that Miss Rachel was at home alone, and her tender solicitude in the matter of a cold which Mr. Rollins had taken, affected him with such go all overish sort of a sensaticm that for a period of some forty eight hours the lady in question was the mistress of bis heart Most certsinly, his exclusive predilections in favor of Miss Rachel lasted no longer thanthe time I have specified, and he came at last to entertain a compound kind of love for his four charmers collectively His condition of mind was truly pitiable, for beside the nervousness a | maining three. Now, this was a contingency too painful to think of, and the poor enamored gentieman spent a whole year in devising ways | and means whereby it might be avoided. As yet, neither of the ladies in question hed the | remotest suspicion of the whirldwind of ecoen- tric passion which was tearing away the very tea laters of Mr. Rolline’s moral being ; for | if at any time he happened to make some ex- traordinary demonstration, it was credited to the account of a sudden and unexpectet twinge of rheumatism with which he wes oc- casionally afflicted. One evening in the month of November, while Rollins was sitting in his lonely room, meditating on the past, and wondering whither the tempest within would eventually lead him, he suddenly bounded from his chair, snapped his fingers, looked out of the window, put more ooal on the fire, plumped himself again in his chair, and then soliloquized, “It’s of no use,” said he, “to endure this confounded perplexity any longer One thin; is certain; [ love them all; and why shoul I not at once deofare myself? Suppose they do laugh at my quadrupled affection, what then? I sm suro they must see my sincerity, and conclude that I am a man of an immense- ly large heart, thus to be abie to love all four of them with this inextinguishable ardor Yet as I can marry but one, the selection must be made by their casting Jots for me, and passing strange it is too, that this happy thougbt should never have ccourred to me until the sent hour. And then, in this de- licious lottery, I shall be sure on my part to drow a prize for the very good reason that there are no blanks. But will the ladies enter into this arrangement? By my soul they must. My proposed plan will at least show that am not partial, and there will be no oceasion among them for jealeusy.”’ It was to Miss Harriet Anodyne that Mr Rollins first intimated the tender sentiments she had inspired, and on the first mention of it the young lady‘blushed overpowering! But as Mr. Rollins further declared that the strength of his affections was equally great for their three mutual friends, her counte- nance underwent an expression of the most comical curiosity; and as at last the pro posed scheme was divulged whereby a selec- tion was to be made, Miss Harriet Inughed until she well nigh choked “Ab, Miss Harriet! you may luugh, but devise a better plan fur me, if youcan You know very well that if I were to select any one of the other three and leave you, you would consider yourself slighted and neglect- ed. You gee, then, that it is quits necessary for the happiness of all concerned that I should carry my point, and as I profess to be above board in all my tranaactions, I shall fully state the case to your father, and ask him to eu- perintend the te “Of course, Mr. Rollina,’’ replied Miss Harriet, “you can ask pa’s o0-operation in agoything you chooge to, but the whole proce- dure would be so strange and unusual, that so faras I am PER i I must beg—” “Now, Miss Harriet! if you please, beg nothing,” interrupted Rollins, “for rely upon it I shall excuse neither of you, and when you have serioucly considered the subject, you will not wish to be excused yourself What sense would there be, I ask you, in my going out of our precious little circle, for a wife.’” On the day of this interview, Mr. Roliins made known his delicate intentions to the other three ladies, and at first they were dis. posed to regard the matter in a jocular light, but on being assured by Mr. Rollins that be loved them all with te poetic ardor of » never-dying agection, it is difficult to say wether amazement or mirth was the BSredom- inant emotion of their breasts. When Miss Harriet Anodyne related to her father the sin- gular commuuication which had been made to her, the Doctor was thrown into suoh convul- sions of layghses, that he protests to thig day he gained seven pounds of flesh on the Strength of it. In the evening the four loved ones got to eet and pe ie notes, and what glow and flutter of chatting excitement they wi all in to be gure Sid ogee Miss Atterbury, Miss Anodyne and Miss Rachel Pettigrew made a feint of treating the whole subject with derision; but Amelia Pet- tigrew very candidly confeesed thut she wes attracted by the novelty of the thing, and if the rest of the girle would agree she would cheerfully fallin with Mr Rollins’s aumor. * And girls! why should we not?’ she in- quired, ‘‘one of ns will be sure to get a good husband, and we may be equally sure that uuless we consent to be wooed in this quar terly manner, some other than one of our own dear selves will be the winner Ba says that any person acquainted with Rollins might have known that if ne ever got married at all, it won!d we done up in the true Rollina style, and for his part, he can’t see any particular impropriety in our owning the oft impeach- ment, and making ourselves a grand Hyme- neal lottery at Mr. Kol 8 earliest conveni- ence Besides, girls! rather a pleasant reflection that Mr. Kollins slights none of us, and after the lucky one is married and set- tled, the three remaining in single blassed ness will have that blessedness augmented in this late trophy to our wapiag charms.”’ The ladies went oG in fresh cachiunations at Miss Amelia's playful oration; but it was plain to see that they were beginning to wa- ver; tothink more seriously of the matter, and before they parted, ij was—‘‘ Well after all, no one is to Loow anything about it but ourselres—aod if pa consents—and if ma eon- sents—urd, iu short, such is the tendency among the fair sex for lotteries and matrimony, that Mr. Rollins carried his point It was a cold but pleasant evening in the beginning of December, that our four hercines and their lover were assezabled in the o baek parlor g: br. Anodyne’s. The ladies locked .somewhat excited, but the worthy Rolling was as comfortable and self-possessed asa duck in a mill pond; be seemed to regard the approaching transaction as in no degree outre byt ag roguiar and business like, and as just dhe only method left, perry tg gentle- man with a capacious heart could be extrica ted from adilemmu. ‘‘ Be satisfied, ladies!” he encouragingly said, ‘‘the result will be right! Love you all but my snpreme affec. tion will be centered on the prize [ draw, for she will of course soon become my lawful and wedded spouse! And I would now say, for myseif and in the name of ray dear wife, who- ever she may be, that our friendship must be permanent and unbroken.’’ At this, the ladies in a flutter of amiable confusion simpered a little ; but juet then the heavy tread of Doctor Anodyne was heard, aud their hearte went pit a-p»t a little. The doctor entered into the spirit of the occasion, and with the most ludi- crous but becoming seas hoe twenty tickets ina box. Kach Isdy had her name on five of these, and the doctor said that he shoald take eleven out singly, shaking the box after each tir ticket was drawn, and the lady having the largest number of the residue must, ao- cording to the stipulation, step up to the Bish- op's office with Mr. Rollins and settle, In the first drawing of the elevon tiekets, Miss Rachel Pettigrew aad Miss Atierbury bad a majority of tickets, but also an equal number of them, and so there was @ necessity for another attempt. In the second sories of drawings, what a fluttering of hearts there was when the eleven tickets were all taken from the box. As the doctor deliberately opened them, even Rollins betrayed some emotion, and es it was announced that a choice had been effected, and on the doctor’s request- ing all the parties to draw nigh the table, the scene was worthy the pencil of a Cruikshanks. The result was: one lady, one ticket; two ladies, three tickets each; one lady, four attendant on so anomalous and whimsical a | ticket; and this lady was Miss Harriet, the state of the affections, Mr. Rollins s knowl edge of the female heart led him to the well- | stantly sprang to her side, grounded sonviction that even should he make proposals to one of the four, he would incur the risk of losing the friendebip of the rv- Mr. Rollins in- ay her meer panions, regarding her as the Heaven bride, erred "Scos sweet caresses which Bone but female lips and female hands can doctor's lovely daughter. sive The marriage came off in a few weeks with great eclat; the three young Indies stand- ing as bridesmaids. and thoes old cronies ef Rollins, each one with a wig on his pate, serv- ing as groomsmen The matcb was pre-em- inently a happy one, for Mr. Rollins got a most devoted wife, and Miss Harriet an exem- plary husband. Tho poetical feature of this voracious histo- ry is, that while any one of the four ladies would gladly have married Mr Rollins, it was Miss Anodyne who bad ever truly loved him. From girlhood up, she had cherished a secret affection for him who twenty-three years ago had won ber youthful and susceptible heart, end now having fairly won him in a lottery, he was to all intents aud purposes her lawful property. _Ivie trae, she was sometimes inclined tos little jealousy at ber hueband’s regard for her three friends, but as Mr Rollins that the decision of the lottery had conoens trated his affections on her alone, she beeame content.
