Mr. Key, the District Attorney, stated that ihe only witness yet to be examined on the part of the prosecution was Mr. Du Beis, the minister from the Netherlands, and as foreign ministers were not liable to the ordinary pro- cess of law, he had addressed a note to the Seeretary of State to request the attendance of Mr. Du Bois, to which he had received the following answer : Derartuent oF STATE, Washington, May 9, 1856. Mr. Key disliked to put the prisoner to any hardship, but felt it his duty to ask a post- ponement until this testimony could be ob- tained. The counsel for defence contended that it was acase of extreme hardship to put the prisoner in custody until this witness should decide whether he will ebey the summons or not. There was no guaranteo that the delay would be productive of any good what- ever, and the testimony if procured would only be accumulative testimony, there being an unusually large number of witneszes to the transaction. The District Attorney replied that it could only be determined after the evidence of this witness was given whether it was only accu- The Justices say that after a careful exam- ination of the evidence, they feel ita duty they owe alike to defendant and Government, that the demands of justice may be fully met, to send this matter to the Criminal Court; that tribunal, they conceive, being the one to grant or refuse application for discharge. s to the application for bail, they are di- vided in opinion, and therefore commit the defendant to the custody of the Marshal until he be discharged thence by due course of law. Handy, Worry Arrextion —Almost every one has had occasion to be aware of the difficulty of as- certaining the number of a house at night by the present plan of small tin or other metal plates containing the figures, and which fig- ures are not only contracted in size, but fre- quently so obliterated as to be quite undis- tinguisbhable. We see that the samo diffi- culty is experienced in New York city, and a writer in the Courier and Enquirer says: me 500d many gentlemen up town bave decided to place the number of their houses upon the glass plate, over their hall doors, in lurge gilt figures, eo as to be equally visible by day and night. One of the greatest con- veniences not only to strangers hut to resi- dents is to distinguish easily the houses of their acquaintances, and now ladies are fre- quently obliged to leave their carriages and climb the stoop to decypher the absurd little number plates upon the doors of our costliest dwellings. The Fifth avenue has already set the example of the improvement, and we hope it wil go through the city, and resultin every house, high or low, being distinctly numbered on the glass or the door in large gilt figures, which is the only place for it. Let New York be numbered.” Wartca Returxs.—The cells were ocoupied mostly by lodgers, there being but one pris- oner retained for trial this morning. [cCoMMUNICATED. Fines.—Mr. Editor: it appears very strange to mo that no arrests are wade of the incendiaries that are nightly devastating our city. Wo had two fires last night, one the night before, and in fact one nearly every night for a week, all the work of incendiaries. And yot, no arrests aro made, or rewards of- fered. This state of things is really getting too bad; something should be done, and that wnstanter. Please, Mr Editor, stir these po- lice gentlemen up, for L am sure they need it While on this subject, allow me to call the attention of the corporate authotities to the difficulty of getting the engine and hose appa- ratus to the fires,—especially late at night. Last night, although it was only 11 o'clock, it Was alniost impossible to get men enough to drag the different apparatus to the fire. 5 Jor one, asa citizen anda property holder, go in for having tho Corporation appropriate @ sum of money for the purpose of purchasing two or more horses, with gearing, foreach en- gine, hose carriage, and hook and ladder com- pany. These horses to be kept at the houses of the different apparatus, so that they can be geared and attached at a moment’s notice. This is done in New Orleans, and I believe in all tho largo cities. Lhe firemen (those noble, self-sacrificing volunteers) are thus saved the labor of dragging the machines, by which they are generally 0 much exhausted, when they arrive at the fire, as to be unable to do service ; and the engines are much sooner on the ground, and consequently the flames more quickly subdued. I sincerely hope some pa- triotic member of the Council or Board will notice this matter, by preparing a bill by the next meeting. Facerg Bonum.
